Today’s short post is a small preview of a post I hope to write this week. There is a common point between both passages; I invite my readers to see if they can figure out what it is. The first few verses today come from the Letter to the Hebrews:
Let brotherly love continue. 2Â Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. 3Â Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them; and those who are ill-treated, since you also are in the body. 4Â Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled; for God will judge the immoral and adulterous. 5Â Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have; for he has said, âI will never fail you nor forsake you.â 6Â Hence we can confidently say,
âThe Lord is my helper,
I will not be afraid;
what can man do to me?â7Â Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God; consider the outcome of their life, and imitate their faith. 8Â Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and for ever.
(Hebrews 13:1-8)
This brings us to the Gospel of Matthew:
31Â âWhen the Son of man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. 32Â Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, 33Â and he will place the sheep at his right hand, but the goats at the left. 34Â Then the King will say to those at his right hand, âCome, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; 35Â for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36Â I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.â 37Â Then the righteous will answer him, âLord, when did we see thee hungry and feed thee, or thirsty and give thee drink? 38Â And when did we see thee a stranger and welcome thee, or naked and clothe thee? 39Â And when did we see thee sick or in prison and visit thee?â 40Â And the King will answer them, âTruly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.â 41Â Then he will say to those at his left hand, âDepart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; 42Â for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, 43Â I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.â 44Â Then they also will answer, âLord, when did we see thee hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to thee?â 45Â Then he will answer them, âTruly, I say to you, as you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me.â 46Â And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.â
