That what you said is a good theory, but I'd say it's also because they want to draw the boy's attention and don't know a better way to do it other than that. It's a kid thing, and boys do it a lot too, especially at a later age. Go into a class full of 10yo and you'll see the boys picking on the girls all the time, mainly to get their attention (I know because I did that, and my friends did it too at that young age)

It's "negative attention getting".

They want attention, but if they "approach" (to use shorthand) then they risk rejection, which women simply cannot abide. It is to keep them (emotionally) safe.

You answered your own question. That is exactly what it is. Its just a way that they test your masculinity. If you take it personal or react negatively; in their minds they will perceive you as weak and instantly be turned off by you.
