The OP describes, in a meme, a classic situation we've seen many, many times before: the "test breakup." The woman says she's not feeling it and their relationship needs to end. The male is upset but accepts it. The woman comes back crying a week later, demanding "why didn't you fight for me?"

After a little while, a relationship stops being a source of validation for a woman. She needs more. She needs to see her value proved more definitively by making a man grovel before her.

I checked the comments expecting that he wasn't the only one. Sure enough, there are many, many Redditors who have experienced this phenomena themselves:

"I had a girl do that once. We dated for a little under a month before she tried, and when I just sort of accepted it and moved on she starts blowing me up a week later asking why I didn't text or call her. I was completely dumbfounded."

"I had one of those. When i said "Oh, Okay" and she saw how indifferent I was to her she actually regretted it."

"My crazy sister-in-law got pissed at her boyfriend for not taking off work when she got sick. She packed his stuff up and put it at the door so he'd see it when he got home. I think in her mind he'd freak out and beg for her forgiveness. Instead he got home, saw his things, put them in his car, and left."

"I had one of those once. It's better off done. Next will be "I only cheated on you to see if you would cheat on me out of revenge!"

"My ex-wife "test fucked" other people for the same reason. This must be a thing."

"Oh man, you're telling me I wasn't the only one that this happened too? I never fought too. I respected her decision to break up, walked out, deleted her phone number and changed mine and never contacted her again. It was pure awesomeness. Plus the fact that she kept tabs on me because she thought that I was/would/did cheat on her despite me working three jobs at the time was getting a little ordinary too."

"My husband once dated a girl who said she cheated and then claimed she read in Cosmo that he would only be upset if he really cared. That relationship did not last and I got to marry an awesome man. Her loss, my gain!"

"Dude my friends wife did that to him and the ass went back."

"You dating my ex wife? I'll tell you how this story ends. If you wind up marrying her you'll lose your house, car, and half your shit. Get out now..."

"Friends girlfriend did this. She wanted to get married and didn't feel he was on the same page. So told him she wanted out of the relationship. They lived together at the time. He was upset but said he understood. She then got very upset, how dare he do this and so on. Gave him the ultimatum to get married or she would leave for good. He told her to leave. Ended up marrying the next girl he went out with ...."

"I moved in with an ex. Well about another year goes by and we were fighting a lot. She told me to get out. Well that was the end of that. I called a buddy with a van. She left for work. And I took my shit and left. She then was angry after work because she expected me to "stay and fight for her". Fuck that noise. That 2 year long relationship taught me thouroughly the wisdom "dont stick your dick in crazy""

"My (now former) wife pulled that one on me about 3 weeks ago. I've got a phone call from my (now former) mother-in-law telling me that, "whatever happens", she doesn't want her daughter back..."

"Literally just happened to me today.."
