PhD's effect on SMV?

I can't count the number of times I'd be gaming a girl, things would be great, tons of IOI's, and she'd ask what I study (or, if older, what I do for a living). I'd say I was an engineer, and she'd say, "Wow, you must be smart. I have to find my friends." I can't imagine a Doctorate in any field yields a different result, especially as women become intimately familiar with the realities of student debt.

On the other hand, when I left work to go to law school, I saw the opposite effect. "What do you study/do?" "I'm a law student." "Oh, tell me more!" It's been a bigger SMV boost than lifting weights, even with the diminishing prospects in big swaths of this profession. And I've got nothing on my med school friends.

I have a PhD in a STEM subject.

Generally, the effect it has on people (of both sexes) is that they consider you to be smart. I think it has a positive effect on SMV, however - and this is crucial -with a PhD there is an opportunity cost. The time you spend earning a PhD could instead be spent building a career in something which has a larger positive effect on your SMV. So taking that into account, it is has a negative pay-off.

A friend of mine who is an investment banker drives a brand new sports car, wears expensive suits and has a well-developed interpersonal relationship skill-set that you'd need to be successful in his field.

Sure, the guy writing mathematics papers is smart, but so is the investment banker, and he has a Porsche and a big house. They drop their knickers for him pretty quickly, for me? No such luck. His SMV is vastly higher than mine, despite me being better looking. There was one time about five years ago when we both went for the same girl. She chose me over him, but it would not happen today - he has pulled ahead of me, in no small measure due to our respective career choices.

Helps with some, not with others. A PhD is nowhere near a panty dropper compared to MD, JD, DDS, MBA. These guys are smart and get paid too. Working out, confidence, dressing well will your cause way more than a PhD.

It's pretty bad if you're a woman. For example, many chinese parents actively discourage their daughter from obtaining a phd because it pushes marriage into the late twenties (4 years undergrad + 2 year masters + 5 year PhD), so that many female PhDs end up either never married, as they have lower SMV and are too picky to boot.

From a male perspective, I suppose it would depend what the PhD was in, and ultimately what job your currently hold. For example, many PhDs are very book smart but complete idiots when it comes to common sense. Just look at the thousands of post-docs in life sciences slaving away without health insurance earning $40k/year with no hope of advancement. Make sure you can get a job with higher earnings that justifies the PhD and I think you'll be fine in terms of SMV.

My field (operations research) is one of the few where getting a PhD actually pays off in the long run, mostly because people will jump off into quantitative finance, which has an exponentially increasing compensation structure as you're promoted. For most fields, you'd be better off getting a masters degree and working immediately.

The following fields have a high demand and low supply of PhDs, which makes the degree worth it from a purely compensation perspective: statistics, operations research, finance, economics, computer science, electrical engineering. The following fields currently produce too many PhDs, or fields in which the PhD is not necessary, which leads to depressed earnings post-graduation, making the degree not really worth it if you just want higher pay; however, you'll probably still have a decent job afterwards: chemistry, biology (and related life sciences), political science, psychology, chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, mathematics. The following fields are probably going to destroy your career if you get PhD in them: the humanities, gender studies, journalism, social services, etc.

Basically, applied math, applied physics and computer science PhDs give you positive return. Life sciences, chemistry, some social science, and related engineering PhDs give you neutral returns. Humanities PhDs are going to ruin your life. Stay away. And for the love of god, never take an unfunded PhD!!

Girls are not stimulated by a degree. They are fun whores. If a phd offered as much fun as an assertive popular guy who thinks about having fun all the time then yeah, girls would pay more attention. In the meantime, go out and approach and learn your own value.

It's a positive thing in the sense that it shows off that you're a strong potential provider. However, make sure that you can still show off your alpha/protector traits.

Wife and brother are lawyers. I have a PhD in Beta. For women being an attorney does nothing whatsoever. My wife hides her lawyerness as much as possible. For men lawyerness is a gigantic SMV boost because it makes you Alpha almost by design.

PhD and SMV? Not as much as the law degree but still a pretty big boost that makes you AMOG among your group- assuming you were already in the running. Darksayed is right that you are much better off spending the time starting businesses or learning investment banking but wealth is fleeting. A PHD makes you stand out and is definitely noticeable for the rest of your life.

Plus once you get that academic credentialing you can use it to study game and TRP. I learned game, dread, and the rules of attraction in record time.

Note that the degree is in political science. Now, the largest concentration of wealthy people in the United States is in D.C. In other words, there's money to be made there. And I daresay a Phd in political science has similar money-making potential in D.C. as an MBA has on Wall Street. OP might consider this to be a 'talking point' with new girls. (Whereas guys in medical/law/business school have it a little easier because the money-making potential of those industries is more commonly known.)

No. Smart women/women with careers are gonna look for someone with a career who makes more than them. Even if you're getting supported its still lowers your SMV because you're still making little money. Against dumb girls/girls with shit jobs it will probably increase your SMV because they're not getting fucked by alphas with careers anyway.

Other girls in academia are either post wall or just like 5s who are perfectly happy with beta bucks.

Law degree, and med degree are more SMV. First because of the selectiveness of those programs and also because of the prospect of more $$$ after graduation.

To younger girls it would be a turn off. To women past age 27 it signals 'marriage material', if you are employed.

They will use your PhD as a status symbol to brag to their friends: "my husband is a professor". I doubt that it is a panty dropper.

To women intelligence means only verbal intelligence. You have to be a smooth talker in a social setting. The ability to solve equations arouses no one.

I disagree with this. It's going to have more to do with how you sell it, and how in tune with the naive social perceptions of your field you are. If you're studying engineering and you simply say, "I'm an engineering major" it's probably not going to be as effective as if you say, "I'm learning how to keep bridges from collapsing" (or something equally in that "easy to digest, but vague enough to not require special knowledge to understand" category), then it will make it much easier for them to ask open ended topics.

Continuing with that idea - you have to remember to speak to their level. When you're not having conversations with people in your department, consider starting off with explanations that would be appropriate for /r/explainlikeimfive - a bit of that means relating it to their life experience.

Poli sci is a super easy one to both be interesting and overwhelmingly dull. It all depends on how you sell it.
