Direct. Always be direct.
Don't be one of those BPers that approach girls (hah) with indirect openers like, "Hey do you have the time?" "Do you know where betabitch street is?", and then talk about mundane shit before asking her out.
Trust me when I say this, it's a lot more effective if you convey your interest from the start, and rejections are quicker so it's better on a cost/benefit analysis. Trust me, I've seen guys waste 20 minutes talking to a girl about regular topics with the intent of later asking the girl out and then later finding out she's not interested or has a boyfriend (whatever makes him give up on the approach, you should never give up on an approach but rather persist but that's a topic but another post). Also you'll be talking to her as a stranger to a stranger, or a new friend to a new friend, you want to be talking as a man to a woman.
Tell her she's beautiful or something, let her know from the start or close to the start that you're talking to her to get to know her and ask her out as quickly as you can so you're intentions are clear.

What about when it comes to other aspects of the game like dating or escalating for sex?

I'd say it's hard to give general knowledge for generic questions.
My suggestion is read the sidebar. Also, field reports are awesome for study, and some are really good stories that show you how women actually act.
I've been lurking for quite some time and there is A LOT to read. But, if you're on the right track, you'll never stop learning/soaking in this information.
Good luck brother.
