A bit of judgement and context of the situation comes into play.

For example...you're not gonna walk into a fresh new job and act like you own the place. Gotta work up to that, lest you wanna lose your job.

Okay, so say you work at a company. You wouldn't go in to the CEO's office and put your balls on the table. But in your own office, you can kill it with your work and be bold and confident.

Know your boundaries. Be the best within those boundaries. Don't piss off the Khan.

Don't be so literal. Walking into a room as fit, well dressed man with good posture would easily satisfy 34 and 36

Under Law 24: Play the Perfect Courtier, there is a small section that is titled Arrange to Be Noticed where it pretty much explains this "paradox" as it states:

"You cannon display yourself too brazenly, yet you must also get yourself noticed."

And,

"You stand no chance of rising if the ruler does no notice you in swamp of courtiers. This task requires much art. It is often initially a matter of being seen, in the literal sense. Pay attention to your physical appearance, then, and find a way to create a distinctive-a subtly- style and image."

Laws 34,6, and 38 all depend on the situation and context. In a business setting where you are aiming for that management position, you have to kiss ass to your superiors but at the same time find a way to get noticed by them so that you can get higher up in the hierarchy.

In a relationship, obviously you want to be the king to have a successful relationship. It really is an art to know how to respond in these types of situations.

Law 1 will always hold true, you will never want to outshine the master. That doesn't mean that you never want the master to notice you, rather, NEVER make him look like a fool.
