I wouldn't even consider it Machiavellian. It is standard operating procedure. As you get older, there will be a greater need to interact amicably with people that you are not going to fuck and people who are not your best friends. Highly functioning social beings do it on autopilot.

If you are not a loser, then chances are your friends are not losers either. They will have girlfriends and wives and it is against your best interest to betray your friends. You have to interact with their girlfriends and wives. In most professions, you will have to interact with co-workers or customers/clients. You will often have to be friendly to people you don't like just to get things done efficiently.

Also, among higher social circles, virtually everybody has positive net value. Knowing high value people can result in jobs, business opportunities, high quality women, etc. You might not know how someone would be beneficial to you in the future, so it is better to get on amicable terms with them now. The "radio silence" approach is an incorrect response when a social interaction does not play out the way you want it to, because if a person is high value, there is still a lot of residual benefit to knowing them and staying on amicable terms with them. In fact, pulling the radio silence routine in response to being "friend zoned" basically tells the entire social circle that you are a beta and you can poison the entire well.

If you actually are a beta and suffer from poor self control, weak frame, self doubt, oneitis, etc then pulling the radio silence routine may be better because staying around the girl and interacting with her will cause you to harm yourself (e.g. cause excessive fantasizing/masturbation, cause you to do creepy behavior, cause you to spend far more money and resources on her than you would with a regular friend, cause you to not pursue other women, etc). Sometimes, during a nasty breakup, this is necessary too because you are emotionally compromised and would make poor decisions in her presence. Or sometimes it is simply to avoid her from trying to retaliate against you. But in general, the correct alpha response to a girl rejecting you is to simply accept it. You can't win it all, but that doesn't mean you start taking an ax to your social network and chopping branches off. You are still amicable because there is still net positive value to be extracted from that relationship. If that girl is high value, there is a good chance she will end up sticking in your social circle (e.g. she may end up dating one of your friends). If it is a low value bar/club slut that you want a ONS with, then maybe it is not worth staying in contact with. But OP sounds young, so if he is trying to date someone in his class/school, going radio silent would be the wrong thing to do because girls gossip. That would ruin his chances with other girls.
