Take pictures of you two before the furniture arrives. Pizza dinner on the floor, mattress on the floor.

These photos will look like a fun adventure yrs from now. Your young selves before kids, roughing it.

Enjoy it. :)

As for making it a home, there isn’t a rush to make it perfect. Select pieces that speak to you, rather than fill space. The holidays will make it feel homey too.

Lastly, cooking great meals is a great way to make a home

congrats on your first home together! we bought our first place together about a year ago (we were living in his own house prior to that) and it was so exciting to have a place that was equally ours in the long term and to settle into that feeling.

in our first week we were also pretty bare-bones, but we had a lot of fun with it. we didn't have a dinner table, so i would set up cushions on the balcony with candles, fairy lights, etc and we'd sit out there on the floor drinking wine until late and soaking up our new neighbourhood.

it was fun and novel to have a whole house that was practically empty so we got a bit silly with it and would sleep in a different room each night, take funny pictures, etc. this is an exciting time, try not to take it too seriously :P

in the back of my mind i was sizing the place up and figuring out how i was going to furnish/decorate it. get a feel of the rooms and the storage space in that first week, so that once your stuff arrives you'll have an idea of where it's going to go and what you'll still need to buy. also take note of any renovations/refurbishments you'll want to take on - it's much easier to see these things when the house is empty.

in short, i'd say that the most valuable thing would be to go into this move with the attitude that this is new and exciting and fun - because it is. don't get too weighed down in the intricacies, and allow yourselves to be swept up in the romance of it all. buying a house together is a huge step, and if you aren't yet married, it's probably the biggest commitment you've made to one another. fill it with good memories and fun and you'll enjoy it for years to come :)

When you get your belongings, pile the boxes in the rooms they go in. All the miscellaneous and decoration ones go in the garage. Unpack the kitchen first. For fun I'd move the air mattress around and sleep in every room.

My husband and I have had our first home for just over a year now, and I have found that cooking a lot seems to make it more homey. It smells good, there is tasty food, we almost always end up hanging out in the kitchen, it's so much fun!

I have a string of Christmas light in my living room that I use instead of the overhead lights, and it up the warm and cozy factor by like, a hundred.

We just yesterday were able to sort and clear away enough to set up a dining room table and some chairs, and I'll tell yah, dinner at the table just made our little family fell that much more like a family.

And take your time to decorate! Nothing makes a home feel colder, IMO, than a complete matching set from Ikea or Art Van bought overnight. Let the house grow organically and enjoy this period of little stuff - easier to keep clean!

If Fall and Winter are your seasons right now, I highly recommend blankets!! Fleece, knitted, fuzzy, etc.... love them all! I love putting them on the arm of an armchair or on our couch. Makes it look super cozy.

A little bit of decor for the holidays helps make a home feel more homey. I always hang something outside our front door! We just got a little fake Christmas tree with lights for the upcoming holidays. Anything for any holiday you celebrate.

And finally, I always say "a clean home is a happy home." When your home is clean, it'll feel so comfy for the both of you!

Curtains will help with sound and privacy if your stuff isn't coming for a few weeks.

Play imaginary decorating each saying where you would put things. My SO and I both love rearranging our house at least once or twice a year. Sometimes even moving rooms up or down a floor lol.
