Everything Tolkien writes belies his Catholic faith and it's really enjoyable to see that Catholic sexual theology is so broadly applicable, even if people don't realize right away the foundational theology that these sexual ethics are based on.
When you raise marriage to a literal aqueduct of grace, the teachings that follow are profoundly beautiful.

I saw someone critiquing Tolkien recently for having so few female characters in his hobbit books, as compared to George RR Martin's GoT series.
However, GRRM's female characters all seem to be psycho. Or conniving. Except maybe Brienne, who is playing what is traditionally a male role. But I don't recall too many strong mother figures or strong wives in his stories. Maybe Gilly.
There's a mother spoiling her son at the Eyrie, there's the thing Mrs. Stannis does to her daughter. There are multiple women obsessed with revenge. I suppose it's a somewhat realistic look at mentally ill women, but I don't see very many healthy or happy women in the show.
Anyway thanks, these comments by Tolkien are great. Excellent:
But the ‘real soul-mate’ is the one you are actually married to.

Writers write what they know so I think it's safe to say this is a slice of Martin's life some how lol.

Yes, well, quite so, though I wasn't going to be the one to say it, lol.
I will say that it's amusing how Tolkien treats with marriage and love affairs in such a hands-off, kind of abstract way in his books. Kind of removed and dreamlike. Distant. Perhaps a sign of the times, back then. And yet his advice to his son is totally concrete and down to earth, kind of like "son, here's the rough and rugged reality of these things." lol.
Though I suppose there's Eowyn and Sam Gamgee's wife to be, and all that. Galadriel... she doesn't seem like a real flesh and blood, breathing person to me. But then again, a lot of the dudes in those books don't always seem that flesh and blood to me either sometimes? lol. That's one thing that GRRM does accomplish, in a lot of ways. Another sign of the times. Hopefully in the future, writers can incorporate all these virtues together at once? Who knows.

The full text of the letter can be found here (43), but the article neatly points out some of the main ideas.
Would you agree with his advice?
Do you think young men today receive good advice from their fathers, or any advice at all?
What aspect did you find the most surprising?
Turning it around, what would the advice for daughters be?

companions in shipwreck not guiding stars
This phrase caught my eye and led me to quickly read more of the full letter. There are a lot of very well expressed observations made in there, some that I've learned to understand recently and some that I don't agree with (yet?). I collect sentences to meditate on and this is going to be a very rich source. Thank you!

I like the juxtaposition of a very strong moral character with a deep understanding of male sexuality. This is why I think it could make for a good discussion. An individual has a nature, but also has an ideal. How does a man reconcile both for a live well lived?
