Date Night Megathread!

I surprised R one day (some of you were in the IRC with me helping me plan out details!) with an indoor picnic.

He. Loved. It.

He talks about it to this day as the best date he ever had, it means a lot to me he loved it so much and we are just about due for a repeat (:

I just spread out a giant comforter on the floor, killed the lights and placed candles everywhere, and got a ton of finger food spread out on little plates. Also wine. Of course.

We sat and talked for hours and laughed and whatever. It was a very light hearted and great time (:

We go for a trail run just the two of us. Best date ever. We do this about once or twice a week.

We can go a few miles without even talking, and it doesn't matter. Just being together, away from everything, brings out our happier, more carefree selves.

(If I were single, I would definitely have this as a date. It would weed out the wimps, and you can see how he approaches challenges like monster hills. Even if the guy turns out to be not your cup of tea, you still got a run out of it, and it costs no money.)

Light role play - Go separately to the restaurant and treat it like a first date. Get all dolled up, send some playfully nervous texts from work ahead of time, have fun with it. Then let him talk you into going back to his place for dessert :)

We do game nights for date night. Board games & video games & jigsaw puzzles. We're old school with games so it's always Monopoly, Sorry, Trivial Pursuit, and Super Mario Bros, Rampart, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. Always accompanied with drinks and terrible food. We have the absolute best time, just hanging out, laughing and telling random stories of our past. (Member berries for any South Park fans??)

Visiting a rock climbing gym is a super fun date (and hobby!). Top rope is cooperative, and bouldering is really fun too.

It's also fun to go do the things you used to do as kids- bowling, roller skating, go to the zoo, etc. My city has this little Christmas village that I went to every year growing up, and my husband and I have had fun date nights there.

Watching UFC! Beer, wings, grown men beating the shit out of each other... what more could you want?

Go to Lush or similar store with nice bath products and pick out a selection, go home and take a long bath together. A cold beer on the side is not required, but highly recommended.

Walk around target and buy a bunch of stuff that you don't really need.

Our date nights vary quite a bit - it's easier to get babysitting from grandparents if we go for something more formal like a hotel stay and restaurant sometimes. But other times we'll just order in a curry or make pizza and have a movie night, and it's perfect :)

I think what I like most is when we pick a kind of date and then I leave it to husband to surprise me, just telling me what kind of outfit I need. He picks great places to eat, like for valentines we went somewhere where you can email a request and they will make something like that it was really nice <3

Our most recent date night was just an Indian takeaway and watching a film, we'd been really busy and the relaxation was just what we needed, then I got my snuggle on. It was just really fun and loving and chilled

My favorite date night is where one of us picks a recipe, the other shops for it, and then we cook it together. After we eat it, we write down a detailed journal entry of what we did and liked and changed and hated, etc. So we have two years worth of date night entrees and the little memories that go with them. Since we've been married, though, this has started to become a 3-4 night a week thing! I'm not complaining, though ;)

One thing that I've never been able to discern -- what do you consider just spending time together versus a date? Especially when you live together!

Our latest date was grabbing sandwiches from a local shop, then walking to the park and finding a picnic table to play Scrabble on. It was a breezy fall afternoon with just enough sun, and it was so much fun!

Some of my favorite dates have been ones where we set out with a specific goal:

Head to a thrift store and find the most ridiculous/hideous/weird thing you can find. Whoever finds the weirdest thing "wins."
Go to a dollar store with a small budget and try to make a date out of it. We've done $10 and ended up playing a weird version of badminton that got us some weird looks at the park, haha.
Go to a used book store (or any bookstore, really) and pick one CD and one book for the other person. We do this at thrift stores all the time, too. J's so good at it. Half of the time he picks books I already have!
Grab children's or just easy puzzles and lay them out on the floor, mix them up, and see who finishes their puzzle first.

Other things we do together: hiking on Saturday mornings, mushroom hunting during the right seasons, walking the park in the morning, thrifting on 50% off weekends, food truck dinner & a movie at the $3 theater, and we have a whole closet full of board games. We have a million craft projects we do together, we've made our own board games, and don't even get me started on seasonal holidays, haha!

My favorite thing is when we grab cups of coffee from the roastery down the street and then use the map of local Little Free Libraries (there are about 40 within 2 miles of us!!) and visit each one and rate them based on what's inside.

One of my favorite dates was when our kids were little and sometimes we couldn't get a sitter so we could go out. I put the kids in bed and then planned a really nice picnic to have in our room. I decorated a basket, made a cute table cloth and then had special foods that I'd worked on earlier. I planned a movie too; we watched that lounging on our bed. I didn't know that would be one of my favorite dating memories. Very romantic (and cheap):)

We don't get to do this very often but when we go out just the two of us we usually go out for beer and wings wherein my husband makes me laugh my head off at anything he chooses. It is so much fun.

We're big sports people, but there are no top-tier professional teams in our state. Common summer dates are going to the single-A baseball team in town for an all-inclusive package - so fun. In the winter, we go to a UHL hockey team and that's my favorite. That's actually our Valentine's Day tradition - we've even started to bring our couple friends in on it too, we rent out an all-inclusive section together. Tons of fun - this past year we got a really nice hotel room too, it was great.
