When it comes to hormonal birth control - your SO should be aware, and I would even say included in the conversation when you decide to make a change (go on it/go off it) Hormonal birth control works well for a lot of women - and there are some women it does not work well for. Secondly, if you start dating the guy while on the pill, and you go years and years and then go off it - you may have mood changes enough that you're really kind of not the same person emotionally. This is something SO needs to be aware of right up front.
Main stream media (MSM) and society as a whole has accepted the pill to be this wonderful thing that empowers and frees women - so a DR may not offer you additional suggestions other than The Pill. This is something that a women should research and hubby/LTR should be included in your process. This affects him, too!
When I was on the pill we used no other form of protection, which essentially means all the responsibility falls to me. This is why the line of communication MUST be open. If I missed a pill or took one late I had to be honest with SO so he wasn't blindsided later if something happened, also so we could take additional precautions.
I went off the pill at the beginning of the year and I feel like so much weight has been lifted from my shoulders. My migraines are fewer and farther between plus less intense. I actually feel normal having moods that cycle through the month as looking back I felt kind of robotic. Also, I actually get horny and want to jump hubby all the time. I enjoy initiating where as a year ago I felt like initiating was so much work because I wasn't in the mood so I was trying to turn us both on.
I hope this doesn't come off anti-pill, I think the pill is a great solution for many women. Just offering some personal perspective - of course YMMV. Thank you for the post u/PerfectSunshines

I found that the pill had a similar effect on me. It my my lows lower and dampened the highs of life. It helped wth the acne and the period problems, for sure, but I was all out of emotional kilter. When I went off it, I actually felt human again! Now I have acne and cramps, but it's worth it for the emotional well-being. Hubs and I are in total agreement over it too, which is awesome!

I'm so glad you two were able to find something that really worked for you! There are so many options that are hardly ever discussed.
And yeah - what's a little acne over your emotions. Women are emotional, it makes us fun lol. Plus diet can always be modified to curb the acne and could have long term benefits to your health :)

Ironically enough, my acne is largely hormonal, and the more I try to work on it, the worse it gets! At this point, I will be back to a warm washcloth and Cetaphil before too long. I'm too old for this nonsense!

Dairy has a lot of hormones in it - do you eat dairy much?

I subsist on Greek yogurt and cheese, so yes. Would that do it?

I'm not a dermatologist - I can only give anecdotal evidence. My sister and her husband both saw dramatic improvement when they ditched dairy.
I've been trying to cut down on it myself and have seen some improvement but I can't imagine a life of no dairy, lol :)

Dairy + Sugar are pimple fuel for me, too!

This is definitely helpful information because it doesn't happen frequently enough that doctors would actually discuss it with their patients.

Breastfeeding as birth control doesn't work for everyone.
Says the mother of two sons very close in age :)

The ovulation suppression is more reliable when people breast feed the way Paleolithic women had: having your baby slung against your chest or sleeping in your bed, suckling almost whenever they want. That is not feasible in modern life.

The Essure is another sterilization method.

My sister had used birth control for about 20 years when she went to Essure. About 6 months later she is freaking out realizing she is having a miscarriage. Ended up she had three Fallopian tubes and the Dr had missed one. Freaked her out for a bit!
Whoa. That must have been shocking!

It was! She has 3 kids and was just shy of 40, and she said that she had felt like her body was changing like she was pregnant but then thought that was ridiculous.

Personally, I love Paragard for birth control. It's immediate protection from pregnancy, no homones (although seriously heavier periods which sucks), and you have fertility upon removal, unlike some hormonal IUDs where it takes a while.
Short of heavier periods, which I got used to, it was great! The pill made me a BPD mess for one week and I gained 4 lbs in a week on it. No thank you!

I love hormonal BC pills and have only had positive side effects from them - but I'm now realizing I'm in the minority for that!

Later on today I'm going to do a little bit about the methods I use in my marriage (FAM and lactational amenorrhea), and why/how to use them. Great list, though. :)
