I'm generally a fan of The Daily Show's Jessica Williams, but the recent segment she did on catcalls frustrated me. Her overall message was that women are subjected to an inordinate amount of "catcalling". I'm sure there's some truth to that, but to me, the piece came off as egotistical grandstanding on her part.

To demonstrate, she walks around NY with a hidden camera following her, to "document" all the catcalls she gets. I believe she only gets three:

  1. One guy says "hi"
  2. One guy says "how are you?"
  3. One guy says "I like your hair"

She then complains about another guy she thinks was "looking at her".

I have no doubt that there are few real creepy assholes that do say horrible things to random women, but when women equate that to someone saying "hello" or even looking at them, that discredits an otherwise valid complaint.

Am I off-base here? Did anyone else see the segment?
