Success isn't easy, but it's not as complicated as people think. I can't tell you who I am or what I've accomplished, but I'm not talking through my ass on this.
Success requires a leader’s commitment to action and excellence on priority tasks.
Brian Tracy on how leaders set the bar high, "As a leader, getting people to commit to excellence, as well as leading by your own example of excellent work habits, is one of the most powerful and important contributions you can make... The starting point is for you to select the specific areas and tasks where excellence is most important."
Let these 3 words guide you:
1) DOING. Develop a bias for action. Plenty of people talk a good game. You want to develop discipline and resilience to the point of becoming unstoppable.
You can't wait for the perfect plan. Hell, you don't start learning much until you start moving. To succeed, you must fail forward, with plenty of course corrections on the way. That takes courage and desire. Find a way to make it happen.
2) ESSENTIALS. The tricky part is in choosing where to focus your resources; where to say "YES", "NO" or "Good Enough." Most guys want to focus on doing fun shit. Success involves the DISCIPLINE of focusing on worthwhile things instead of enjoyable things. This means taking a grown-up approach. It’s not an indulgence designed to satisfy your feelings of the moment.
Ruthlessly optimize and protect your resources. Get good at saying NO. Those who struggle squander resources on trivial matters. You want to give your BEST ENERGY to things that matter most.
3) WELL. Commit to excellence. The average person suffers from a poverty of desire. Their dreams are feeble and they skim the surface of life. Mired in a negative, constricted worldview, they lack the ability to form a compelling future vision. Your job is to define and deliver excellence; to go deeper, higher, further and faster than others dare.
By default, most people have the limited vision of an employee. Their "line of sight" is limited to the narrow boundaries of the limited roles they play. Once you realize your life is your baby, your business, you can develop You Inc. as a thriving entity with the broader, bolder vision of an owner’s eyes.
