Rape culture is not about the number of rapes but how we deal with it.

Behaviors commonly associated with rape culture include victim blaming, sexual objectification, trivializing rape, denial of widespread rape, refusing to acknowledge the harm caused by some forms of sexual violence, or some combination of these. Victim blaming is largely a sign of the just world fallacy. Bad stuff happens to you? You probably are a bad human. This is also a widespread phenomena with sick people. "Oh you got sick? Probably because you are so unhappy, that's bad for your immune system" "WTF bro, I was perfectly happy until I got cancer, then I got depressed after vomiting my life out!" People want to believe.

Close to home, people always trivialize crimes that happen near them since they don't want to hear it. People want to believe.

Need for security combined with the just world fallacy and naturally nobody wants to believe that they live in a bad neighborhood: "If I don't wear that, don't drink there etc I can circumvent getting raped" People want to believe.

I also think that we are largely ignoring the lynch mobs that go after rapists.

Rape is horrible and it happens, to change how the public sees it takes a shit ton of effort.

Only about 6% of men are rapists. Considering that 94% of men are not rapists, no we do not live in a rape culture.

There is, for boys who are raped by adult women and men raped by other men in prison. In the former we say they're lucky. In the latter that they deserved it. In both we generally refuse to prosecute the abuser.

This is a cultural belief that leads to more rape victims.

But rape culture as feminists apply it? No that doesn't exist to any significant degree in the west. It does in certain non-western, non-white nations. So naturally SJWs will never mention that.

Much like how other people have said, the media is responsible for the perception of rape culture rather than the reality. The FBI has consistently reported around 8% of investigations carried out to be false rape allegations. It is a rather low number by percentage but is 4x higher than the false reporting rates of other crimes. In other words, women are using the law against someone they have a grudge against 4x as much as any other crime. The constant amount of false allegations mixed with the decrease in the amount of reported forcible rapes means "rape culture" should be renamed "false-rape culture."

People have talked about victim blaming and there are also issues with under reporting. A culture though isn't just about all the big things, it's the little things.

So at work, we have a safety culture. And it can either be good or bad depending on the attitudes, beliefs and opinions of the workers and management. The culture around safety isn't the best. A few years ago, Suncor had like, 3 deaths in a 6 month span and I started back working there again afterwards. People in general were just complacent and that's what added to the culture. People were really high up so nobody saw them, so they wouldn't tie off because they were in a building. People would litter, people would come to break early, people would see a mess and be like, you don't need to get that now.

Stuff like that is small, but it gives people a certain mindset. A huge part of the rape culture is Donald Trump's comments and the idea that it's just "locker room talk". Minimizing sexually assaulting someone down to boys being boys makes people complacent on sexual assaults that take place and makes it like they're not a big deal.

The idea that people are ashamed to report rapes and sexual assault is a problem and is apart of the rape culture. People complain, oh, feminists say always believe the victim. Is that rational? No. But we live in a society where the default seems to be not to trust them, so some people end up going to the other extreme, especially if they have experience in people not believing them.

It's just a phrase, no big deal and nothing to get upset over. If someone ever discusses it in a normal social setting, they're probably really weird for bringing up something so morbid in the first place. And if the context actually made it OK to bring up, just say the normal response that consent is important and you can get behind that. There's really not much to argue with anyone about this topic.

You'll see a host of related topics come up about rape culture... things like affirmative consent, discussions on the exact point a person is too drunk to consent, etc. I honestly don't see much value in discussing those things here in purple pill. They don't relate to anything "blue pill" or "red pill" much at all. It's basically a legal topic and a topic of pragmatism, striking the right balance between protecting the the rights of people and avoiding laws that can apply to a bunch of innocuous situations. That's not really what TRP or TBP deal with.

The topic is tired and offers little value to this subreddit.

It's not that hard to deal with, man. If someone says, "I don't like when men are ok with their friends sexually harassing in the club." That's not the time to scrutinize the exact ratios of men that do that, and it's not the time to nitpick about the definitions of harassment. It's just a simple statement that doesn't actually impact your life at all. Just say, "Yeah, that's the worst." Because we can all agree that any situation accurately described by that situation is bad... normal people don't support harassment or complacency toward seeing it happening.

It'd be like someone saying, "I hate when someone road rages." And then you randomly start digging in deeper: "Well, is it possible the other drivers did something to spark the road rage? What exactly is road rage? Sometimes totally innocent behavior is considered road rage... like speeding up to overtake a slower drive so that you can cruise at your desired speed bla bla bla bla". No, man, there's no reason for this stiff, awkward debate. "Yup, road rage totally blows! Anger is bad." Wow, was that so hard?

How can you even know when the definition of rape culture is so fluid? Some people will tell you that rape culture includes things like catcalling and manspreading, as part of a "culture that normalizes rape and misogyny".

If you can get a feminist to directly tell you how the rape culture theory can be falsified, then we can actually talk about statistics. Right now they are brilliantly making unfalsifiable general claims by shifting goalposts at their convenience.

Though the 1 in 5 claim is bullshit.

I think there's a bit of a misunderstanding going around about what's meant by rape culture. Rape culture is short for "rape supportive culture", and it just refers to any aspect of culture that supports rape or sexual violence - often in a very indirect way. By "a very indirect way", I'm meaning like, you might argue that victim blaming is a form of rape culture. When lots of people make comments like, "it's sad that she was raped, but honestly, what did she expect? Walking home alone at that hour!", obviously that doesn't directly result in anyone being raped. But if enough people make comments like that, it might become a sort of commonly held view that people should expect to be raped if they walk home alone late at night. And once that view becomes widespread enough, you get situations where rapists are acquitted or treated leniently, because "the girl/guy was sort of asking for it. What did they expect?"

That's just one little example, but that's what's meant by rape culture :)

Victim blaming is the aspect of the discourse that punishes women for having their boundaries crossed without permission, rape culture is the aspect of the discourse that encourages men to cross those boundaries without permission. Our current rape culture does not encourage indiscriminate rape, rather it establishes a hierarchy of how "reasonable" rape and other forms of crossing boundaries are in particular circumstances. One of its purposes is to make men feel secure that if their wives/daughters/sisters just behave according to rules they won't be raped, but maybe if the man finds a woman behaving a particular way he can just rape her or commit some other form of sexual assault and everything will be fine.

In essence modern rape culture in liberal democracies is about men having their cake and eating it too. They can have a wife who goes out to work to earn money for the household and interacts with a male plumber to get the blocked toilet fixed and does the shopping alone without need of an armed guard. But they can also keep the possibility of getting away with shoving their hand up some drunk stranger's skirt when she's queasily propping herself up against a wall and about to vomit.

Do we still have to explain the meaning of "rape culture"?

It doesn't mean "we live in a culture where every woman gets raped", but rather "we live in a culture that makes it easy for rapists to go unpunished and where rape is being trivialized and victims are discouraged from coming forward".

Why does no one use google anymore? "what is rape culture" only takes a few keystrokes and you would have come across some articles that explain it or this pic.

Rape culture is based around girls who get too drunk at frat parties and end up in bed with some guy that isn't alpha or they aren't as attracted to enough. You can't collect statistics on these type of incidents because people usually don't remember them and most won't consider it rape because they consented initially.
