The women would probably stop watching those television shows.

Almost all male entertainment has conventionally attractive women in it, despite all of the body positivity/diversity messaging. I am unable to think of a form of entertainment geared towards men that has this message in it or has removed conventional standards of beauty.

There are loads of unattractive men with long successful careers in entertainment and literally no one complains about it.

Most male comedians look like potatoes. Adam Driver is weird-looking and in everything. Jonah Hill had to drop some weight in order to score dramatic roles but he's still not hot and doing well. He was doing fine in comedy while fat and ugly. This isn't even getting into the big name male actors who got famous while attractive but have seen their careers continue and flourish as they've lost their looks. Jude Law gave an interview where he talked about how aging poorly let him be taken more seriously as a dramatic actor. How many aging actresses do you think feel the same way?

Have your tastes catered to by literally all of Hollywood but some lady with a few extra pounds or a face you personally don't like looking at gets cast in something you wanna watch and suddenly it's persecution. Just admit you're mad that women who don't give you a boner have entertainment careers at all.

That's why I rofl about awards, which are supposedly rewarding "talent". There are actors who have years of training in good drama schools and will never land a main role because they don't fit Hollywood beauty standards. There are even famous singers who have more cameos and thus more screen time and bigger paychecks than them.

Likewise, I'm tired of the inevitable shoved sex scenes or romances. Often they don't really add value and I'm trying to follow shows who have a minimal or none of that bullshit.

I'd say less attractive people who make us feel bad because we are light-years of looking like them and only got the roles because of their pretty face and more talented actors. That'd make the shows more realistic and more enjoyable for me.

The problem is what you're describing as "male entertainment" is not in fact entertainment exclusively for males. I assume what you mean is block buster sci-fi/fantasy/superhero movies, correct? Unless you're talking about professional wrestling or some shit.

Anyway, women are allowed to like those things also, and they have money that's just as green as yours. So there's nothing wrong with making a superhero movie once in a while where the lead is a woman and doesn't exist solely to fuel your adolescent masturbatory fantasies. I bet you guys would've loved Captain Marvel if she got naked in it.

Long story short, if there's a movie that you don't like because it has icky girls in it, then don't see that movie. For example when I saw the Sonic the Hedgehog trailer I said to myself "This looks like a steaming pile of shit." Thus when the movie comes out I simply will not see it (even if they fix how Sonic looks.) I don't go on twitter and harass the actors or post nudes of the lead actresses and threaten to rape them. I simply watch a different movie, problem solved.

That's what normal functioning adults do.

I’m an average-looking guy who’s predictably attracted to hot women, but the cult of attractiveness in media can be annoying, even when it favors my tastes. It can be refreshing to see people break it up as long as the casting choice isn’t unrealistic for the role.

"Conventionally attractive" as in average, not off-the-charts, right? There are a ton of characters in TV who are normal-attractive and take good care of themselves. There are tons of women in my town who are normal-attractive too. I'm sitting in a Starbucks right now, and there are several men and women in here who are normal-attractive.

I think you're creating a false dichotomy between the basement-dwelling creep and the Chippendales dancer--there's a whole spectrum of perfectly attractive guys in between. Some people are just plain hideous, but more often than that people just don't make any attempt to take care of themselves.

Yes, society is gynocentric in all regards. If men would care enough about this to vote with their wallets, then things would change. Too few men care, between groups of men who don't consume mass quantities of movies/scripted TV to "allies" who push for more misandry in our culture because they think it will get them laid. There is money however to be made from catering to men who do want this and they need to pool their money online to support the production of content that they would really like to see.

I don't understand why "real men" are always thought of as balding, ugly, basement dwelling creeps in sub reddits like this? When people say they want portrayals of "real men" or "real women" they just mean they want an average, realistic looking person who isn't a 9/10-10/10 Mary Sue of a character, that doesn't necessarily mean ugly, overweight, creepy, and awful? I mean.... Sex and The City had a lot of very plain/not conventionally attractive men in it?

From my vague memories of Sex and The City, particularly who I remember the main partners being:

Charlotte ends up with a man who is facially decent looking, but short, chubby and bald. Before this I remember her being with Kyle McLaughlin, who was a looker back in the day, but not so much at that point, plus it was framed of being more about his wealth/prestige than 'hotness'.

Miranda's main partner throughout the show is definitely not an actor who you would laud for his conventional attractiveness. Less so than Miranda, definitely.

Carrie does go out with that carpenter dude who is pretty hot. But 'Mr Big' isn't really (I think its supposed to be his presence and 'gravitas' that is attractive... personally I don't see it, but whatever). She also dates an aged, tiny, artist.

Samantha primarily dates young conventionally attractive dudes, but I mean..... thats kind of her schtick. To show her otherwise would be like Don Draper dating women plain women his age, it's a character thing not just an audience pleasing thing.
I seem to remember her absolutely dating out of that pool with less attractive guys and women, as well.

Basically - Sex & the City is a really terrible example for this, because the majority of the men on screen are less 'hunky' and conventionally attractive than the women on screen.

On the broader point - personally I'd be all for both men and women who are less conventionally attractive being on TV more. I like it when it happens, because it makes what I'm watching feel more 'real', and the whole 'Hollywood ugly' (when a character is supposed to be ugly but clearly isn't, because they're scared to put an actually un-attractive person on TV) is aggravating enough to take you out of the story.
And, yes, you're wrong that its some gynocentric plot because now we're allowed ugly women but not ugly men - still less attractive men feature on TV a hell of a lot more than less attractive women, and yes its because of sexism (the expectation that women are more about their physical appearance but men are more about their character).

Ugly truth: Some jobs really are exclusive to those that match societal standards of beauty.

The fact is, if anyone is really gonna complain about a discriminatory selection process in fields that are literally ABOUT THEM BEING ATTRACTIVE,they're full of crap because it's everyone including the complaintant that has acknowledge that they are in fact appealing to the majority of eyes. It is you who are ignoring the economic reality of this.

The economic reality is that once something becomes popular widespread pirating is unavoidable and inescapable so nowadays everyone who scouts for new work, whatever their field, is hoping for a story and characters that can be franchised across mediums so you can hit the consumer many times over with your product being new and therefore not quite so easily pirated yet. So buy the comic book, go to the movies, read the novelisations, watch the TV series, watch the spinoff series with a minor character, buy the toys, wear the pajamas. etc. Appeal across multiple countries, classes, genders and mediums is where the big $$$ are. Your boobies everywhere comics are now niche, second rank at best, a deadend. And for something to be the franchise that will rain money, it helps to have relatable characters for both men and women and eye candy for both men and women, and adaptability to cultures with rules against all sorts of things.

Can't be helped. That is the new reality that the internet has brought you. Pirating demoted everything that was not that. When your fave comic becomes a movie where there are *gasp* slightly more ordinary women involved and fewer titties on display, this is why. It isn't that women have bullied anyone into writing a certain way. It is that your fave comic is now a niche thing and to jump to the big league it needs to change.

On the plus side if you've got tastes that don't fit what is being made for the market there are independent creators out there. But let's be real... they'd love to sell out.

Ok so like first thing is, the women aren't going from conventionally attractive bulbous hag, it's more like they're going from being extremely beautiful to being still pretty attractive but looking a bit more like a person that could exist.

The second thing is that the overwhelming majority of media is considered specifically male entertainment and made as such. Entire mediums are designated specifically as male hobbies and people try to safeguard them as such, and women are just expected to sit in a corner and watch hallmark films

The third thing is that from an artistic standpoint, it's just not as interesting. Sex appeal can make a character interesting but when every woman is hyper sexualized in the exact same way while the male characters are all different and unique it's blatant and annoying. Also overfocusing on sexualizing the character can take away from making a design that's interesting and representative of them.

No amount of propaganda will change what men find attractive. They may not be as outspoken in their appreciation, but the testosterone wants what it wants.

So there is a natural form of brakes on the body-positivity nonsense. Women may be able to fool each other, but they can't fool men's libidos.
