Yes you are the prize and can be while looking out for others’ well-being. It says look not only to your own interests, but consider the interests of others. The command is NOT disregard your own interests solely for others.

Did Jesus just follow the interests of others? No. But he was concerned for their well-being which is commonly at odds with people’s self proclaimed interests.

To address this directly: Context matters.

There is also the oft quoted verse from Ephesians 5 about "submitting yourself to one another in Christ" that parallels this. Please note that Paul is specifically referring to brothers and sisters in Christ in the Church congregation and NOT the marriage relationship.

The marriage relationship has different standards (Christ and the Church, love-respect, headship-submission).

I view it like a corporate hierarchy. God is the CEO, and we're somewhere in middle management. Some folks are higher or lower than you on that hierarchy. Older guys that have lived a godly life and appear to have genuine service, maybe you should look at like that older more experienced manager at work that shows you the ropes.

So as far as women go in this regard, they would be one of the juniors asking to get promoted to second in command of the department. Before coming to you, the middle manager, and asking for a promotion like that they need to show you that they are actually eager to do their best at the job. That's sort of the gist of the "I am the prize mentality", in that she needs to demonstrate that she's up for that position. You don't want just anyone for that, you want an actual qualified candidate.

That's because relationships are a strange thing. You both have to be in the right place with God for it to work. For your part, you have to make sure that your primary interest in her isn't just getting in her pants and you want to discern that he primary interest isn't just getting in your wallet. Look at messy divorces you've probably observed in the church, and tell me how avoiding that isn't looking out for both your interests. Yeah, I've heard about leading her, etc., but the thing is you have to be sure she isn't just putting on a mask long enough to get that promotion.

Proverbs 22:3 "says that the wise see danger coming, and take cover but fools keep going and pay the price." With an I am the prize mentality, your just trying to suss out whether she's more trouble than she's worth.

Also, one of the things that's pressed nowadays is that a man having standards is somehow bad. That's because women deal really poorly with rejection and arrogant and conceited are just ways they avoid introspectively dealing with the rejection by placing the blame on you.

Exactly my issue as well. How do you humble yourself before another, while remaining assertive on the grounds of truth.
