I'm curious as to whether an open thread post (daily, weekly or on occasion) where we discuss almost anything would be beneficial to this sub and something many readers and commenters would enjoy.

A few random thoughts:

It can give commenters a chance to pose a question or make a comment or two that may not "fit" in one of the active threads or that they don't want to create an entire post around, for whatever reason.

Random comments in an open thread may spark ideas for new posts, for those who do want to create one.

Ideas, topics and comments in open threads can give greater insight into the community here overall, and specific individuals that can be used to tailor messages and posts to better minister to, bond with, and just make the sub even better for the readers.

To be clear, I'm not talking about altering the substance or core content, but rather knowing where someone (or the community at large) is coming from can help when writing about different topics.

Open threads may foster a greater sense of community in addition to what's already here.

It just gives everyone a chance to "talk shop" about almost any and every thing under the sun, make new friends, get some people to open up more, give others a chance to chime in without needing to create a stand alone post and much more.

And while they can and have worked great in other venues, would they here, in this sub?

I don't know.

Just throwing this out there and seeing what the response may be.

It could work great or it could be a train wreck.

That said, here's my opinion on how often they should appear, if tried.

Right now, I'd say once a week or once every few posts, depending on how often new posts are submitted. It would look bad to see more open threads (if done daily) than posts people are writing.

As the sub grows, it could be more often, even moving to daily if enough other posts are created.

To wrap this up, even though I'm throwing this idea out there for this sub, I'm ambivalent about it.

After all, with Reddit, you can find umpteen subreddits about every topic imaginable, if one wants to discuss other things or bond with others about a common interest.

Still, I think there's benefit to be had if this is something others are interested in and if /u/Red-Curious thinks is worth testing.
