In short, I think it all goes down to autonomy and how hard is to meet a rich man willing to commit when you are poor and young. Also, I believe both situations aren't really aspirational scenarios but just paths people end up in – I talk this from my own personal experience as someone who did both, I was a sex worker and now I married someone rich... as much none of this were my dream life, being a escort made me learn to be more attractive and lead me to meet my husband... so those things can be actually connected, and I know a few girls in prostitution who joined with this route in mind.

It's hard to come into contact with upper class men if you come from a lower class background where there aren't any in your immediate circle. Plus, it's hard to approach men or women nowadays even if you are attracted.

I worked as a hostess at a high end restaurant where I came into contact with a lot of wealthy men. A lot of men made "eyes" at me, but few went beyond that. Sometimes I'd get into a conversation with one of them, only for their friends to step in, or a manager to step in, or a work matter to draw you away. I was also reprimanded for giving my number to a customer. I also think many men are afraid of being considered "predatory" towards a women who is younger and lower-status, or they're afraid of predatory women who are only after their money. Men in general these days are pretty timid - even rich men and so called "alpha males". I think the most simple answer to this would be that they enjoy the profession or they’re not interested in marrying a provider. They don’t have to marry a rich provider, and doing sex work is perfectly valid and gives them money. I think there are a number of reasons (some outlined here by others) but essentially I think sex work presents itself as an opportunity much earlier in life for pretty women than being cared and provided for by a rich man. Additionally, many women in sex work have experience sexual assault and abuse which leads them towards that profession. Rich men providing for these women must a) be around and available to offer security before they get into sex work and b) have the pretty woman be receptive and believe this is a better way of living life (opposed to making her own money and doing what she wants or whatever). But I think it’s even more complicated than that.

Maybe she didn't want to become a stay at home mother and preferred the freedom to do whatever she wanted whenever she wanted. Marriage isn't desirable for everyone, and though it can provide financial security I don't think it should be seen as an alternative to sex work, the sanctity of marriage has been tainted in the eyes of many from tales of divorce, cheating, beds devoid of passion, etc., but it's not just a career path you can pursue.

Even if you are just in it for the profit, it seems like a way more risky endeavor than just straight forward sex work. Opportunities of real love will pass by because you're already chained to someone, and you could cheat but that's a lot of time and energy to try to sneak around when you could have just not gotten married in the first place to someone you didn't actually want. If there's a divorce, any smart man would have signed a prenup so his funds stay with him.

As a sex worker though, your money is yours, there isn't any conniving into trying to take someone else or constantly suck up to them in hopes that maybe they reward you with gifts or whatever. It also seems more moral actually because at least it's less deceitful. Sure they might make their client feel loved, but that's just part of the experience they are paying for, just like a server at a restaurant probably isn't genuinely happy too see their costumers, they just want tips, but they still smile and joke around with you as if you are friends, because that's part of the experience you pay for when you sit down to a restaurant. It's way more likely for everyone to be on the same page that it is a transaction.

Also being a staying at home mom just as an alternative to be a sex worker sounds horrible. Why bring children into the world under those conditions? I doubt someone who married a man simply because he was rich would made an ideal mother, and I doubt a man who married a woman just because she was beautiful would make an ideal father. It sounds so fake and devoid of anything of substance. Would they even know how to properly love anything other than themselves? And if he married her for her beauty, would he still even want her after? Children take a toll on the body, and ages it about 10 years, and it takes a while to fully recover. Would a guy like that really stay by her side while she heals, or would he play around with other beautiful women instead?

It's a combination of laziness along with short-sightedness.

Pair-bonding actually requires work and devotion. Putting on an act for a few hundred an hour is far easier in the short run.

If people were inclined to consistently do tedious things to better themselves then everyone would have olympic-class physiques or at the very least not be fat. But the short term benefits of sitting around eating junk food is more appealing than the long term benefits of living two or three times as long.

With having a rich suitor, firstly they have their pick of beautiful women so it's pretty unstable; there is lots of competition, they might find someone younger and more beautiful at any time, or decide that you no longer obide by rules they might set out and discard you. Secondly it's a high control transactional relationship, where often you have to play a part and allow someone to dictate multiple areas of your life, constantly (for instance how you act, how you present yourself, what you spend the money they give you on etc).
