It’s a pretty damn common trope: guy goes on a date with a girl. Guy gets shattered when he realizes she didn't want sex with him and was only using him for his wallet.

It makes sense to laugh at him; ngl, I myself have laughed at guys in those situations. How could you be delusional enough to think that paying for dinner and doing other financial favours for a woman would make her like you?! How could you not realize you were just a wallet- I mean, she can get someone she actually wants sex with! Right?

But, that’s actually the point. In the guy's eyes, this girl is choosing to spend time with him when she has other guys who she is actually sexually attracted to. Not only is she choosing it; she KEEPS choosing it. It’s not like it was a one off date when she was just bored and wanted something to eat. It’s a continuous thing. She’s seen his average body, his average face, things she’s DEFINITELY had better than, and continues to spend more time with him. It’s not a huge stretch for him to believe “maybe she likes who I am?”. This is especially the case when they talk together and hang out and go to expensive places (for some reason girls like doing those things with guys when the guy pays). It’s actually not that stupid for him to get things a little twisted. Naive yes, but he's not as delusional as is commonly thought.
