In the vast majority of cases, males and females are not suited to simply be friends. There are exceptions, but they are far fewer in number than the general trend where they are not balanced and genuine friendships. The typical case of "friendship" is a major imbalance where the man is attracted to the woman, which is not reciprocated by the woman. Women would be surprised by how many of their male friends would jump at the chance of being more than friends with them.

Just think about male and female interests and consider how often they do not coincide. This is nobody's fault, men and women are simply wired differently. This, along with the underlying intentions of men looking for more than friendship will cause a major imbalance in the relationship, as the man will seek to provide more for the woman with the hope that he will get her as a girlfriend. This is misguided thinking that needs to stop, and men should just face rejection instead of torturing themselves to get "friendship" when they want more than that. It may make men upset to find out that they get nothing by being an emotional tampon, but that is a lesson they need to learn. Just like the slut does not get the commitment she desires, the simp will not get the sexual relationship he desires by giving away emotional commitment for free.

While this guy got a relationship (however much that was), this is not the reality for most guys in this case. You should act in your own best interest by not allowing yourself to be taken advantage of, regardless of whether or not the woman is simply oblivious to your interests or is maliciously taking advantage of your kindness. Good principles protect yourself from either case of hardship, just like a woman not sleeping with a man quickly protects her from any players.
