My grandpas dad was 6β10β and all his kids were 6β to 6β9
My grandpa was 6β4β and his kids were 5β3β (aunt) to 6β6β.
My dads 5β9β and Iβm 6β1β
We are all unmistakably related, except for my cousin Jordan, his mom was a hoe and that weird fuck could be ANYBODYS.

My parents had five kids.
One has jet black hair and is often mistaken for being Italian or european (we have had women come up to her and start speaking in Italian because they wanted to ask her something)
One had bright orange hair like a carrot
One had blonde hair
Two had brown hair.
Dad had black hair, mum had brown hair.

Earlier in 2018 there was a post that showed a picture of people responses to a girl saying that she does no like short people
[β]Svartanatten2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You can be short with tall ancestors. But if all of them are short... I have a cousin around 2m and his parents are short. But his mother is Scandinavian with tall relatives (210+) so it's not weird. But this is like denying the correlation, which is just weird. Heritage matter.
[β][deleted] 162 points163 points164 points 5 years ago (26 children) | Copy Link
Lol the height is hilariously different but their eyes are almost the same and their nose is similar. Unless "dad" has a wayyyy taller brother this is a freak event. Truth be told, I'm one of these too- I'm almost half a foot taller than my parents
[β]stardustlikeall[S] 83 points84 points85 points 5 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link
Also the mom could have been taller than the dad, but this is just a meme. I have cousins like that, the mom is a foot taller than the dad. So the kids are also a foot taller than the dad.
[β]LabTech4168 points69 points70 points 5 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link
Biologist here: I think it's clear that what we have here is an incomplete data set. Height isn't based on any one trait or gene; it's a cluster of traits that in aggregate determine how tall you are. While it's true diet is also a determining factor, unless the father was malnourished during his childhood, it's unlikely the disparity comes from there.
It's entirely possible that the mother's some kind of Amazonian giantess and the father's into that sort of thing, but it's just as possible that the mother's a cheating whore who wanted her sons and daughters to be able to reach the counter without a footstool, or she just doesn't consider marriage vows to mean anything and fucked some big boy on the side.
[β]TheRiseAndFall26 points27 points28 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Are there any diseases that the dad could have had in childhood that would stunt his growth but not necessarily be passed down genetically?
[β]LabTech4119 points20 points21 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Yeah, there's diseases like parasitic infections that sap you and keep you sickly long enough to be stunted, but once again we have an incomplete data set. Assuming the father's lived his life in the 1st world, it's highly unlikely he had a long-term debilitating illness that stunted his growth, or that he was chronically malnourished either.
I mean, there's all sorts of things that skip a generation, or are carried by a parent as opposed to manifested by the parent; that having been said, this is a SIGNIFICANT height disparity. For example, my father's more than a foot taller than my mother, so I'm about an inch shorter than him when he was in his prime. While it's entirely possible that a son could grow to be (by the looks of it) 2 feet taller than his father, it's exceedingly unlikely unless being exceedingly tall is carried on either or both sides of the family.
I don't remember where I saw it, but I read a statistic where about 12% of all offspring are raised by men who aren't the biological father; the reason being that most women are smart enough to get knocked up by men who are close enough in general appearance to the husband that they never catch on. Some women are stupid or just don't care, and that's when you get the more suspicious cases like this. The numbers are probably higher than that, but it's not like women are going to come forward and admit that sort of thing.
[β]TheRiseAndFall0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I believe the statistics and infidelity was the first thought I had too, but the reason for my question is that the guy's facial features do look a lot like the alleged father's. So if the mother cheated, she at least did a great job of picking someone who has the right features.
[β]LabTech410 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Facial features are another constellation of genes and traits that form a collective whole, but like I said there's incomplete data here and there's no way to obtain more. There's some facial features that would more accurately denote cheating or not, such as a widow's peak, ear lobe attachments, eye color, etc., but unless you have something distinctive it all arbitrary.

I've been wondering about something for years, actually. I had cancer in my teens, shortly before I turned 14 and really hit my growth spurt. It was a tumor around my spine, and it was decided that we'd use chemo to try to eliminate it. But chemo is basically a cocktail of drugs that each find a different type of cells to eliminate, good and bad ones, as long as they share certain characteristics that make them vulnerable to a specific medicine. And I received fairly large doses of chemo, until I was 16 and had a bone marrow transplant to finally get rid of it.
So my question is this: can chemo affect height, if it's taken during your teenage growth spurt? I am smaller than both of my brothers, and my father, but taller than my mother. What do you think?
[β]LabTech411 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Chemo is to drugs as white phosphorus is to BB rounds: calling it 'medication' is really a euphemism, because what chemo really amounts to is straight poison that hopefully kills the cancer before it kills you. More than two years of that, plus possibly radiation treatments, given that you said you had a bone marrow transplant, puts an ENORMOUS strain on a developing body's system.
I can't speak with authority since I'm not a physician, just a biologist, but I can't see why that kind of load on your body wouldn't have negatively impacted your height.
Basically, non-genetic height factors largely rely on what your overall health was like during your developmental years; any resources that are either sapped or directed to dealing with health problems are resources that aren't going into height. It's fiendishly more complicated than that, but that's what it amounts to.
[β]stardustlikeall[S] 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Many possibilities out there
[β]hakoonamatata90 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I've heard smoking cigarettes in your development years can have a negative impact on height as well.
[β]LabTech410 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Sure, because it's a constant toxin load that your body has to compensate for. I read somewhere that your average cigarette has something like 180-200 distinct toxic compounds, and all of them have to be dealt with by your body, which puts a strain on the development.
It's the same reason why 'low birthweight' is another such warning on the sides of cigarette packs; resources that should go to development are instead going to detoxifying the body.
[β]hakoonamatata90 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
It so increases carbon monoxide levels In the blood which means your body doesnt get asmuch oxygen which is key to growth. AND inhibits hemoglobin which provides nutrition to your cells.
If you got kids, make sure they never smoke a cigarette if anything.
Indeed.

[β]SpecJoeMagic2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I donβt know if being almost half a foot taller than oneβs parents is always a freak event. My mom is 5β5β and dad is 6β4β. I am 6β8β. Compared to mom, it looks like my height is a freak event, but dad explains it, though there is still a 4β difference there, which is almost half a foot taller, but itβs not a freak event because all of my dadβs family is tall.
[β]bigmfkr2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah, my dad and myself also have a huge height difference, but otherwise I look exactly like him. He's short, I'm tall. The height comes from my mother's dad.

Dwarfism is a recessive gene, so if the mother is normal sized and does not carry the gene the children can turn out to be normal height, but I'd still DNA test any kid given 1/5 tested aren't the fathers.
[β]Barne1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
eh, could be a freak genetic occurrence. height is determined based on many genes, ones that we donβt even know of. itβs a polygenic inherited thing and you inherit around 50% of the DNA from your mom, and 50% from your dad. if you just happened to get all the right genes that correspond with height, then you could have short parents and come out tall.
scientists believe height is around 80% genetics, the rest environment. this is one of those extreme cases in which the dad probably had bad genes and bad environment, and the kid got the perfect gene set and a perfect environment.
with 7+ billion people, itβs bound to happen.
[β]Nevek_Green0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Very well put, they also determined that children can inherit 70% of their DNA from their fathers so there is a lot of discoveries to still be made.
