Bought a safety razor a few days ago, money well spent. Might be the last razor I'll ever buy and I'm not even 30. Fuck their plastic garbage.

Classic razors tend to last for life, blades are cheap, and shaving is much better overall. Welcome to the club. BTW, you should check /r/wicked_edge

Be careful in the UK though - gun control hasn't gotten the job done, so there is now a crack-down on anything with a sharp edge. You can be arrested for having a Chef's Knife with you in public - I kid you not.

I bought my safety razor 3 years ago and it's going strong. So far I've spent around 25 dollars in blades (yeah that's right), just buy bulk 100 units for ~12 USD, each unit can shave 3 to 5 times, it's amazing.

Amazon
[–]Long_Range_Shooter2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I got my safety razor off Amazon, a Merkur long handle about three years ago. I buy the blades for it in 100 packs which depending on the brand run between $13-$25. I change out the blades twice a month so I'm spending less than fifty cents a month on razor blades. Some change the blades out sooner but twice a month works for me. Even if you changed the blade out once a week you're still spending less than a dollar a month on razor blades.
It was when I needed blades for my Mach 3 razor, I found that a four pack was $12.95, that was when I said I'm done. I switched to a safety razor and never looked back. Hey if it was good enough for my dad and grandfather, it's good enough for me.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That’s amazing. I make way less than I used to but used to buy the Mach 3 five packs for like $25.

[–]AGuesthouseInBangkok1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Be careful, guys.
I fell for this "double edge" "safety razor" idea.
Fuck Gillette and their commercials, but these old-style hipster razors are terrible.
After a few weeks, I have managed to stop cutting myself, but the shave isn't smooth. Even after three passes, in different directions, you'll still feel a little scratchy after your shave.
The "safety razor" fad is only popular because the equipment looks kind of cool. But trust me: the shave is inferior and it's not something you should buy into.
[–]upvote4pedro5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
So you think a shaving device that has been in everyday use since 1880 is a fad? Try changing your shaving cream. I use the foam stuff in a can. Really worked wonders for me.
[–]AGuesthouseInBangkok3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It WAS in everyday use.
It IS a fad now.
Everyone else has been using twin blades since the 1980s, and triple blades since the 1990s.
They're superior because the first blade lifts the whiskers for the next blade(s) to cut, resulting in a smoother, closer shave.
[–]jabbercockey3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I'm old enough to have started shaving when safety razors were all there was. trust me at least 3 blades and the most important thing a pivoting head is a vast improvement.
[–]TigPlaze1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I tried one of those retro safety razors. It took way more shaving technique to get a decent shave without cutting myself. I go with Dollar Shave Club now and the quality is better. You can get a decent shave with one of those safety ones, but it's way harder.

There are other possible explanations for the decreased revenues. P&G is claiming that it also has to do with increased competition in the market and some other factors. I'm not sure that anyone has really done a thorough analysis and sorted through all these factors carefully

That’s because Gillette copped out and labeled it as a “$8 billion noncash write down.” It’s a loss and the loss (that the CEO acknowledged as being worth it) happened right after their toxic masculinity campaign. Believe what you want IDGAF but they clearly lost billions over it.

That article specifically says it’s not to do with the online ad campaign (the write-down is attributed to currency devaluations, lower shaving frequency, increased competition from new market disruptors like Dollar Shave Club and Harry's) and actually points out that their online customer reach following online ad campaigns has increased....
I’m not a big fan of the ad because I think any half decent feminist critique of society acknowledges the role mothers, sisters, aunties, etc play in encouraging boys and young men to toughen up, fight back, be strong, don’t cry, etc. Which the ad did nothing to draw attention to.
But no the ad campaign didn’t lead to an $8bn brand hit according to that article.

The article apologized because it was not up to standard and the number was not real. Gillette didn’t lose any money - it was cancelled out because of the massive publicity (free advertising) the company got from the outrage. Sales actually rose with the outrage, and it was a planned move. Same with what Nike did. Companies PRETEND to be progressive.

[–]lobstergenocide8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
They blame it partly on less men shaving yet right before that day the market continues to grow. They also blame part of it on sales losses to competitors like Dollar Shave Club - why do you think people left them for DSC? Obviously they’re not gonna come out and say they fucked up, you have to read between the lines
[+]TheBeardedMarxist-10 points-9 points-8 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]dotslashlife2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link
Do you really believe everything everyone says? Have you not yet realized 99.9% of what’s in the news is fake?
Of course Gillette can’t say to the world ‘We lost $8billion dollars due to sexist ads’. It would be a media field day and 10x more people would become aware of it.
[–]TheBeardedMarxist-2 points-1 points0 points 4 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
Im sorry, but you're a moron if you think they lost 8 billion in that short amount of time. It took ovet a decade. Main reason is people got tired of paying $20 for a disposable razor. Case closed.
[–]ZANIESXD3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
It’s quite obvious that the reason Gillette lost 8 billion in one quarter is because they pissed off their main customer base, heterosexual cis men, through virtue signaling and hating on masculinity. Most kids don’t grow up with a father in today’s society, they’re raised by female teachers and mothers. Maybe if society had more masculine role models we’d be better off because right now we don’t and look where we are. You can see on this thread very clearly that people are pissed off and as of this year will no longer buy Gillette products. I saw the youtube video of the commercial get hundreds of thousands of downvotes and angry men commenting about it within hours of being posted. If you cant tie the correlation together that when a company pisses off their largest customer base that they find a different company to buy similar products of which there are many then I don’t know what else to tell you except you probably shouldn’t be calling other people morons.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]ZANIESXD0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
“It didn’t work” is a gross understatement. Their ad threw them off the fucking deep end. 1.5 million dislikes for an advertisement is no joke. If they were already going to lose money, this absolutely killed them and no doubt cost them billions of dollars. Your cognitive dissonance and unwillingness to digest the facts doesn’t bother me but it should bother you. You know the ad was a mistake and it’s sad that you won’t admit it. Read the comments here, read the comments there. We are not buying Gillette. We had no beef with them before. The ad was a BIG mistake. Keep telling yourself whatever you want to believe but we know what’s up and your delusional perspective will not save Gillette.
[–]TheBeardedMarxist-2 points-1 points0 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It was the equivalent of a chick attacking a stranger unprovoked, getting her ass beat and having none of the white knights come to her rescue.

That must have been sweet. I just can't fathom that NO ONE at Gillette saw what a terrible idea it was to go with that ad. Even if they wanted to find a way to preach that SJW toxic masculinity bullshit, you would think they would have had the good sense to just sponsor some asshole's TED talk or something. Even if it said, "sponsored by Gillette," it coudn't have done the damage that this ad did. I could write a better ad right now in 30 seconds or so:
int. shot, a partially shaven handsome man in his bathroom holding a Gillette razor with shaving foam on his face. Man: I always shave with Gillette razors because they're really good. END
I realize my ad isn't exactly sheer genius. It's dirt simple, in fact. But even something that ridiculously simple is a better ad than that CRAP they ran. This simplistic ad would not have lost them 8 billion dollars.
[–]greywolf19680 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I like your ad my friend. May I add a few details please? As he finishes shaving , he walks put of the bathroom and you see his Army/ Fireman/ Police uniform hanging up and the mgtow logo in the background. " Real Men use Gillette." Iknow it's cheesy but I'm sure other mgtows could write their own version.
Works for me. We could all write way better ads than Gillette's crap.

You guys, this post is on the front page of reddit, LoL (if you're not logged in, it's the second item you see). Must be a glitch in their software.
[–]dotslashlife5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Since when does reddit show non leftwing things on the front page?
All the beta SJWs are going to need safe spaces after seeing this.
[–]GET_SP0OKED6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Just to let you guys know, Gillette lost 8 billion dollars because of this stupid ad campaign

[–]kekmagic4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
You guys are late to the party! I've been using safety razor for about 13 years now!
I've always hated the disposable garbage that stops working as soon as you cut too much hair. I like being able to remove the blade, clean out the hair, and keep using it just fine during the same shaving session.
Also, I've been boycotting fascist far-left garbage for some years too, for example I don't buy anything coca-cola or pepsi, I either drink no cola at all, or drink other brands.
[–]toeshotz2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Can you point me as to what safety razor I should buy
[–]kekmagic1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I honestly have been using the same ones all of this time, I never saw them before that, or after that, so at the time I bought a spare that I opened and one that I kept sealed, and I still have those same 3, and they're plastic, so whatever is good enough by my experience.
My brother kept borrowing my razors when we lived to together, so you now it's an upgrade.
As for the blades, it's a gamble, it doesn't even depend on the brand because the same brand (like say, schick) may give you a packet of 3 that cut effortlessly and painlessly, and the next packet may feel like it's actually trying to rip the hair off. That said, to me disposables felt like that anyway, except after 3 passes I already felt like I needed to switch to a new razor because of all the hair in the way and between the 14+ blades in the razor.
Buy whatever safety razor you can find (that isn't gillette), and for the blades just try a bunch of blade brands, they're cheap as you can buy a single packet or tiny box with only 3 blades, I don't don't think you'd find the same brands I use in your location anyway.
[–]toeshotz1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Well thank you replying. I'll look and see what I can find, non gillette of course.
[–]annehoper4205 points6 points7 points 4 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
Hahaha! Notice how beards are making a comeback? That meme is too funny!
Boycotting works! I wish we had an organized boycott network to offset the political opposition. Sinking a scumbag company like Gillette and movies like...well, every movie now...that would work better than any phony voting campaign.

Gilette should be boycotted. How can they sell manly products but be total pussies and soyboys. Not cool Gilette.

As a grown ass man and a lifelong Pittsburgh Steelers fan, I say fuck Gillette more for their sponsorship of the fuckin' new england patriots than their pandering to soi bois ( who mostly all have beards(!) and twat knots!) But I digress. Jesse James caught that fucking ball!!!

He stopped that evil white man from talking to that woman. Saved her life.

Gillette CEO Says the Billions of Dollars Lost Over the “Toxic Masculinity” Ad Was Worth It

The sad thing is that it works. Just look at P&Gs share price.
[–]Darth_Toenail21 points22 points23 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
No, look at Gillette, which has lost $9 billion.
[–]yipopov4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
You say that as if SJW execs care about real world profits and ultimately the livelihood of ordinary Gillette workers.
[–]Darth_Toenail9 points10 points11 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
No I don't. :)
[–]ZANIESXD5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Wrong.
[–]yipopov5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Share price means everything to the people who approve things like the Gillette ad, because that’s what determines their own bottom lines.
Of course in the real world what should ultimately matter is throughput, but this isn’t the real world, this is the 🤡 🌍
[–]t353tfb0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
There is no Gillette share price. There's a p&g share price. Gillette is a division of p&g. Gillette on its own probably doesn't have that much impact on the results of the whole company. The head on a platter moment if it ever happens will be an internal affair between whoever runs Gillette and his boss in p&g.
Stocks have to be measured relative to the overall stock market. ALL stocks are up. Even junky companies are up.
Stocks being up has more to due with the Fed printing money than anything else.
