I'll never forget my old Tom driving a buddy he didn't know onto the back of the couch while making the craziest sounds I'd ever heard from a cat. Soon as I was like "Fuzz, it's cool" he was like "Oh, guess you can be here"and fucked off. He was more protective than half the dogs I've owned.
[–]Darth_Toenail5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Have you seen this video of a cat saving a young child from a dog?
I know that cases like that are so rare they're almost unheard of, but I've seen several dogs scared shitless by frenzied cats less than a quarter of their size. Honestly, I wouldn't want to tangle with one myself. It's like fighting a small furry tornado, with claws.
[–]Lyradex4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Have not, that's awesome. My cat Fuzz was ridiculous, the shit he pulled belongs in a book and half the time I don't tell many stories about him because they come across as pure bullshit when there aren't witnesses around to verify, but here's a classic of the many stories of King Fuzzy.
My mother was an unpleasant person behind closed doors or around people she didn't value, like my friends for example, from non- influential families.
Tirades, shrieking, name calling, hysterical freak outs, insults and rage, a daily thing.
I was pretty inured to it by my late teens, and my friends were all well armored emotionally types, so they'd just chill in my room while I'd face tank the rage, then we'd get about our day.
So, this one day my buddies make it to the room, but she dives out of her room and blocks the top of the stairs catching me and starts a harangue of the day. Like an opera she'd always build up, starting snide and biting, running your appearance down, complaining that you didn't do x chore just so or you got an a- instead of an A, eventually she'd crescendo into you're worthless scum, should have aborted, blah blah. I'd amuse myself creating dialogue or playing songs in my head and trying to get them to synch with her mouth movements.
Seriously not trying to complain, this is actually a funny memory to me.
As she's building towards insults, rage and volume, out of the corner of my eye, I see Fuzzy come out of my room and saunter over. Then I see my buddies heads peak around the corner on top of each other, scooby doo cartoon style.
The squacking is increasing in volume, cat saunters over and sits down beside her, elegant and upright as fuck. He was a big damn cat, chin to legs type when he'd lay on you. He chills there just looking at her. My buddies are watching me, my mother and the cat and I'm just watching the cat while trying to give just enough appearance of attention to appease the menstrual monster.
Then, right as she hits fever pitch, the kind of level usually followed by a strike or two, the cat pulls up his right paw, gives it two licks, and goes from regal cat statue pose, to kabuki demon mask in a damn femtosecond. Like, it was honestly intimidating seeing his face distort like that. He pounces up and latches onto her leg, clawing away at her jeans.
She jumps back shrieking, I slip past, cat hops off her leg, follows me into the room, I close the door as the cat walks past all of us, ignoring us, goes and lays on my pillow on the futon and goes to sleep.
That animal changed my opinion of cats from strong dislike to absolute adoration for life. He was something else. He lived to 18 and a half regularly scrapping with coyotes, raccoons and dogs, and passed in his sleep with his girl beside him. (Seriously, he just showed up from some week long adventure with this tiny female cat I dubbed gidget in tow, she never left his side from the time she arrived, and she passed 3 weeks after him, she just stopped eating)
Cats can be something else.

I don't know man, as much as I love dogs, they're pack animals while cats are way more independent and thrive in solitude, that's way more "masculine" if you ask me. The argument doesn't really make much sense anyway.

You lucky bastard. I got started way too late because of the (cough) ex. As soon as i can, im out of the rat race.
[–]Itisforsexy2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
Genuinely curious, why do you still work? Do you enjoy what you do? If your portfolio is that large, you could easily live off of the interest / dividends of your investments.
You ask a very good question and it deserves an honest straightforward answer. Basically two reasons: Fear and Greed.
Fear because it’s always in the back of your mind if you have enough, especially because of inflation. I track my spending with Mint so I have a very granular view of my expenses. I can tell you that food costs (restaurants plus groceries combined) are up about 10% vs last year. And here in Toronto were I live, rents went up even more than that. With all the money various governments have printed, I fear hyperinflation.
The second factor is Greed. What got me to where I am was being frugal and making a lot of sacrifices, what if I don’t want to live that way for the rest of my life? Maybe I want to up my lifestyle. Also I have some much older retired friends that live on a fixed income, and in a way, it’s depressing because they’re trying to stay under that fixed amount. I don’t want to be doing that.
So I figure while I’m still relatively young, and in a six-figure job making decent money, I might as well make hay while the sun is shining. Are there days where I think fuck this, maybe it’s time to quit? Hell yes, especially lately with a new job and traversing the learning curve. But the Fear and Greed factor is currently stronger, for now.
[–]Itisforsexy1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
So there are a few things to parse out in your response. The first I'd say is that I share your concern of inflation, but that's easily offset. The bank I deal with, Tangerine, offers a very good track-record mutual fund that's been averaging an 8% nominal return. Meaning even after inflation, that's a real 5-6% return. You said you have a million + portfolio, so right there that's $50k a year. To me, that's living like a mad king (but then I am a minimalist).
As far as food costs go, I think that's more related to Toroto. I live in a Montreal Suburb and my food costs are hilariously low, I spend around $40 a week on food. Though I don't go out to restaurants, that could easily double my weekly expenses. I don't know your budget, but on 50k a year I don't see a restaurant a week or two as an issue at all.
And for hyperinflation, the easy solution to protect against that is owning 10% of your wealth in gold and silver. You can do this effortlessly by owning a goldmoney account. Any money you deposit into this bank is backed by gold, and fluctuates based on the spot price. If the US or Canadian governments hyperinflate the debt / unfunded liabilities away, gold and silver will skyrocket in value because all of the economic energy that is in dollars will shift into gold and silver.
Permanently if gold and silver are used as a 1:1 backing for whatever new currency is created after such an economic Tsunami, and temporarily if not (but still giving you the opportunity to far more than just protect your current wealth). I think bitcoin demonstrates the potential of this, for the very limited set of people who recognize that governments have only two choices in the coming years and decades, hyperinflate or default. Either will result in huge market turmoil, giving people like us access to complete economic domination.
The second factor is Greed. What got me to where I am was being frugal and making a lot of sacrifices, what if I don’t want to live that way for the rest of my life?
That's very fair, but then I ask, have you done the math? Do you actually know how much you need to live in the lifestyle you want? You need to determine exactly what that is, because maybe you already have enough and you just haven't quantified it so you don't know.
Maybe I want to up my lifestyle. Also I have some much older retired friends that live on a fixed income, and in a way, it’s depressing because they’re trying to stay under that fixed amount. I don’t want to be doing that.
I'm going to go out on a limb and assume those friends aren't sitting on a million + dollar portfolio that generates more income in of itself than the median family income.
So in summary I will say, know exactly what you want and put a number on it so you know what your target is, buy 10% of your wealth into gold and silver (less or more is still fine, even at 1% you'll be well-covered), and also consider that if you decide to retire, you have no obligation to remain in Toronto. Homes and condos in that city are so stupidly overpriced, I qualify buying a home in Toronto as an IQ test similar to buying a home prior to 08.
I'm nowhere near your current financial situation, but I do like to motivate myself by browsing realtor.ca, using the map function, and just checking out various homes for sale. I've checked quite a few areas that have truly stunning views, like near Mont-Tremblant, a nice home for $350,000 there has a view that would make the Gods orgasm, is extremely luxurious... my dude, if I were you, I'd already be living there in perpetual bliss with my Dog.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Thanks for your great reply! Sounds like you have a great fund with Tangerine. One of my biggest holdings is a highly diversified multifamily residential REIT that I bought a few years back when it got severely beat up, so my yield on cost on it is about 10%. Which means without any appreciation (it's gone up a lot these last few years, as it only yields about 6% now), I'm guaranteed a ~10% return just on the distributions alone.
I used to work for a company that was HQ'ed in Montreal, so I travelled there a lot, food prices generally are slightly higher there imo. Where Montreal wins is in rent, it's literally less than half of Toronto for an equivalent dwelling. But the major killer is tax, I was asked by my company if I would consider moving to Montreal. I plugged my salary into this and it was a definite no way!
You're right about Toronto real estate, it's just insane. I can literally pay for a detached house cash and still have money left over, but what Robert Kiyosaki said was true, a house is not an asset. The cashflow from dividends I'd have to forego to pay for a house cash would be make it massive negative for me to own a house. Also, I've put myself through the "What if I won a $10 million lottery", in every possible scenario I came up with, the first thing I'd do is get out of Toronto. So given that I really don't want to live here long term, there's no point in even thinking about buying a house here.
Really appreciate your reply, it's made me think over the past day and put things into perspective. I looked up the median household income for Toronto and it's $78K. My dividends are higher than that so if I want to live a middle-class lifestyle on my portfolio right now, it's possible. I also just gave a friend in Montreal a cash gift. He lives in Montreal, has a wife and kid, and lives on the poverty line (earns less than $30K/year), so if he can scrape by with a family at that level, then more than 3x that level for a minimalist (not frugal but minimalist) guy would be no problem at all.
Thanks for the suggestion of browsing realtor.ca, going to give that a try!
[–]Itisforsexy1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Sounds good my dude, you're in a great spot in life and I hope you take advantage of it. I'd be curious to know what kind of home appeals to you btw, always fascinates me knowing people's home preferences.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Thanks! Right now my ideal home preference is a rental condo on a high floor overlooking the water in an urban, walkable area. Rent is still much cheaper than owning (especially in Toronto), and all the amenities are there, plus in an urban setting I can get around by walking, transit or bicycle. I'm thinking somewhere along Toronto's Harbourfront area would be a good example, or Yorkville (Bloor/Yonge).

Woman are strong drivers of GDP, worthless GDP numbers that are based on useless consumption. They require so much vanity nonsense.
1, Fashion and cosmetics is dominated by woman and their lust to look good, it's a nasty cycle, look good > get attention > wants to get more attention > buy more stuff. Men can feel good in a ripped and torn t-shirt.
2, Marketing is dominated by woman, no brainer but it works. Marketing is all about making people buy things they normally would not have bought. Temptation, attraction, deception, manipulation of the mind. An important industry for the Keynesian model to function correctly. Without this sector, so many jobs lost and everything breaks down, funny that huh? Our economy is driven by this rubbish, an industry that promotes and encourages people to spend their money on shit they probably didn't need, this keeps the economic engine going. The velocity of money is the speed of money being exchanged in an economy, meaning the faster the money zips around the higher the velocity and it's an important calculation for determining GDP, what a load of shit.
So we create all sorts of crazy niches, then fashion changes by season because if it didn't the money would stop flowing and these vanity whores love to stay on whats cool. Every time a new fad starts, it continues the spending cycle.
3, Online bloggers and journalists. Posting pictures on instashit writing about some glib nonsense and harvesting groupies, guiding the cultural changes of society into a more highly self absorbed lusty wench. Next time you read an article written by a woman notice they report on something and rather than using objective truth, the article has tinges of opinions scattered. They get away with it because they are "innocent" "caring" "honest"... nope. Agenda pushers.

Although your opinion will be looked in bad light by normie snowflakes, I agree with your point. Vanity is purely driven by them and the entire industry that depends on them, make sure they keep spending.
I saw an ad on cable that advertised a line of "beauty" products and asked women to try it because "they are worth it". The level of cringe is high with this one

as someone who has spent the last 6 months and 5 figures repairing and paying back taxes on a house I inherited, owning a house is stupid if you have no intention of raising a family in the near future
it's just a money hole, houses are designed to be used by a family with two income earners
a single man can live in much more efficient dwellings than single-family households and use the saved resources to secure his position, build a better life, or attempt ambitious projects
a man who likes to work with his hands would do far better to have a shop with good squarefootage built (or bought), then build a small 400-600 sqft apartment into it himself. His total costs for a high quality, steel-framed and aluminum roofed and sided 2000sqft shop that will easily last well over 100 years with minimal maintenance would be less than half that of a typical 3bed 2bath and he'd have tons of usable space for tools and equipment for whatever pursuits he has in mind. Not to mention his property taxes would be much lower.
a man who works primarily with his mind such as a writer or a software engineer would do better to live out of a well-provisioned vehicle set up to be totally off the grid, avoiding property taxes, mortgage interest, and utility costs entirely, he might even buy some undeveloped property to park it on which has far, FAR lower property taxes than developed property... like 90% less. Or he could purchase a quadplex and rent out the other dwellings, keeping his dwelling costs FAR lower than a typical house and perhaps even gaining a property that produces a net income

I am the writer in your story and I moved myself far away. I live in the Dominican Republic and live in a condo-type hotel for $350 a month, all bills included. Going overseas is the answer for the creative mind types if life allows it!

I disagree. Owning property is one the smartest things to purchase...from tax benefits, equity and property values.
[–]buff_minorcan4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Depends on what you mean by "purchase". A 30 year loan will cost you a shit ton in interest. Plus in all that time you've had to repair the roof and likely replace the air condition unit, etc. Did the increase in property value cover the cost of that mortgage and repairs? In some cases yes it can, but I actually know a few people that sadly their homes are paid off but worth very little due to simply a shitty neighborhood that developed around them that didn't exist 30 years prior.
Just to be clear I do believe there are lots of instances where owning property is the smartest thing to purchase, but it's been damaging to a lot of people to push the narrative that it's ALWAYS the smart thing to do.
[–]SirYouAreIncorrect0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
In my area rent far exceed the costs of owning even when you factor in Maintenance and Interest.
I can buy a 3 bedroom home, or a duplex for less than renting a small studio apartment
[–]buff_minorcan-1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Less of a monthly payment doesn't mean it "costs" less.
[+][deleted] 5 years ago* (7 children) | Copy Link
[–]SirYouAreIncorrect0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
All of this largely depends on your location.
In my area there are almost zero quadplex and getting approval to build one would be impossible, you have a few but not many duplex's on the market, but the city generally only approved the building fo 20+ unit multifamily and single family units, not much in between
Most of the Quads are converted from very hold homes, that are money pits and not something anyone should buy really unless you want to be a slumlord

owning a house is stupid if you have no intention of raising a family
Property tax of 3,400 ÷ 12 = house payment of $283.00
Let me know when you find a 2,700 sqft apartment in the city for that much champ.
[–]Itisforsexy0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
You have to include home insurance, as well as repair costs, so the real cost per month is closer to $500. Still, for living life in an actual private home, it can be worth it. Depends on your lifestyle preferences.
[–]T00000090 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
insurance isn't a requirement once it's paid off, and repair costs are low if you take care of things. I just cut a check for $8,000 for a new roof, which was 20+ years old so do the math on that and the "repair cost" was almost nothing when I wont need to do that again for another 15+ years.
[–]Itisforsexy0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
While it's true that insurance isn't mandatory when you own your home, paid off clear, it's risky not to get it unless you live in an area with the most sublime weather in the world. And even then I'd be nervous. Home insurance is fairly cheap overall, so at least for myself I'd get it for the peace of mind.
And yes repairs are cheap, averaged out it's usually around 1% of your home's value per year.
[–]T00000090 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
The thing about "home insurance" is that it covers almost nothing, and what it does cover is behind a massive deductible because of how insurance works so unless there is an earthquake you might as well not have it.
And FYI earthquakes are not covered.....
[–]Itisforsexy0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
There are different insurance packages that cover different things, and given I intend to buy a home in the realm of $300,000, I'd want insurance to protect against total destruction from something like a Tornado, wildfire, Earthquake, etc... just have to know what you're buying.
I don't disagree, but I see insurance as a scam and they are great at taking payments and suddenly don't know who you are when it's time to cut a check.
[–]fasterfind1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]SilverGryphon2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
But you if you are MGTOW you buy cheaper cars and cheaper homes. I drive a small 1.0 litre car and own a small 1 bedroom apartment. Had I married I would have had to buy a 3 bedroom apartment and a gaz guzzling 3.0 litre SUV. Not to mention all the useless furniture and appliances. I don't even own a microwave oven, I can but I don't.
[–]Londonnj0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
True though here's the difference at least for me personally: 1.) I feel no obligation to buy a new car every few years and without a partner you have no body to pressure you otherwise. I like older cars and will gladly daily drive then, if it works good it works good. I'll daily drive a 80's G body And completely restore the thing and get another 30 years out of it(and turns heads among car enthusiasts) for about half the cost of a new car. And if I decide to sell it I'll get back closer to what I paid into it than I ever would selling a car I bought new. 2.) As far as housing I'll buy one and build up. I don't mind having to deal with my house looking like a construction site inside for a month if it saves me tens of thousands and comes out exactly how I want.
[–]boytjie2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I like older cars and will gladly daily drive then, if it works good it works good.
My fantasy vehicle is a 1930-ish type pickup truck, as often shown in American depression type movies. It is terminally rusty and usually belongs to a hillbilly family. The drivers of these vehicles usually have bare feet, bib overalls (with one bib strap broken and the legs turned-up) and rifle racks in the back window. They wear battered straw hats and are often depicted sucking on a blade of grass. Frequently, there is a hound dawg named “Blue” in the load bin of the vehicle. It would look like shit so not be a target for gold diggers or thieves. But it would have excellent tyres, brakes, aircon, sound system, engine and other mod-cons, be super reliable and flatten wannabe drag racers.

Now if you say this is about marriage, then you need to remove car and home as those do not come with marriage and I am pretty sure you need those regardless of your marital status.
Car would still be bought, home would still be purchased...you would just be alone. She would buy her own car and home..now 2 cars and homes are bought where the couple may have shared at least one...Hopefully at least one anyway...live why have a car if you're not going to live in it as a couple.
