I tried this. The women I thought had the best personalities had zero interest in me. They ranged from "reasonably attractive" to "well... okay." I typically avoided the women with the nice clothes and tons of make-up, because that screams "expensive/high maintenance."

In a relationship: Depends on incomes, breadwinner obviously has more money to splash and should treat their partner. Things should be fairly even though, both should make an effort.
