Grew up with nothing but women - single mom, 3 older sisters, 2 aunts and a grandmother- only male was estranged father who was absent / drunk through my entire childhood.

I was also the youngest.

More insidious than simply not being taught “how to man”, is that by merely growing up with only a female perspective, you internalize the notion that men are fundamentally bad.

Complaints about how shitty this ex boyfriend is, what a loser your dad is, how this man molested your cousin, how a man cheated on your sister etc etc. it’s never ending.

Now, all of these complaints are valid, but if you are the only person growing up with a dick in a house full of women for years and this is all you hear, what do you think this does to your mind? Everything you are is shit and bad and shameful.

It would be like a black kid cruelly adopted into a Klan family. Sure they might consider you “one of the good ones” and feed / clothe you - but at the same time you grow up hearing what lazy, violent criminals all people that look like you are.

And women do not care to look any deeper or with any empathy because they are simultaneously told that any of their own personal shortcomings are due to men at large.

You can see that sentiment play out here on PPD every day and more blatantly among FDS types.

Common male behavior is shamed and ridiculed unless it somehow serves a female benefit.

Bottom line - Women can’t teach men to be men because they resent men in the first place if those men are not serving them in some way.

I would probably give him a lot of TRP advice - build yourself up, be confident. Be physically strong and healthy. Strive for excellence in all your endeavors, and be proud of your accomplishments. Be interesting - be knowledgeable and have things to talk about. Show genuine interest in people when they talk - listen, make them feel valued. If you feel like on your own you are enough (and are doing your best to look your best), people will start to gravitate towards you. Nobody wants to spend time around someone who projects anger / resentment / self-pity

I'd make sure he ate a reasonably healthy diet and spent a little time every day being active. I'd stay on him to maintain good hygiene. I'd try not to be too strict about who he hangs out with or what he does outside of school as long as he's not getting into too much trouble.

Past that I don't think it's really a mom's place to advise boys about this, nor do I think most boys would listen to their moms. And even if he did, I think mom's input often does more harm than good. The best thing a mom can do for a boy is make sure he has male role models around and get out of the way.

Edit: OK I realized you just said my son in this hypo is in his early 20s. At that point any meddling I do is definitely going to do more harm than good.

I have make friends I give advice to all the time. Lift, work on your confidence, get rejected until you aren’t afraid of it anymore, if they have a shitty haircut/beard/style I tell them to change it, and stop seeing sex and women as unattainable—we’re people just like them and we have insecurities and flaws too. Also a lot of them go for women way out of their leaugue so I’d tell them to stop doing that and go for a moderately cute girl who shares some common interests and ask her out.

They don’t listen to my advice because it’s hard and scary and they wan’t a 8/10 blonde sorority girl to throw herself at them.

I would direct my son to this advice from Dan Savage.

You're having a hard time getting girls. That sucks. I remember what it was like when I was 15 and wanted boys and couldn't get any. It sucked. Same thing I told my dude friends, who weren't assbags, just not great at the whole social thing: you're a good person, you have a lot to offer, and most importantly, you don't need to find someone to make yourself happy. A relationship should be the cherry on an awesome cake, not the whole cake in and of itself. If you think you're lacking, figure out what it is and try to repair it- for yourself. Happiness is multi-dimensional and first and foremost, I want them to love themselves.

I also try to reinforce what they do have going for them; most of them had good personalities, and a good sense of humor. Honestly most of the time it was just insecurity on their end.

Self-awareness and self-improvement (which are not special, unique, or exclusive to TRP) goes a lot further than pretty much any other advice I could give someone. On top of that, being in a relationship should not be the sole purpose of a person's being; that's just asking for an unhappy life.

You realize that the vast majority of men who make it known online that they are struggling with women fall into the incel or extreme red pill category and also express hatred for women right? Those are the men that disgust us, not normal decent dudes who can’t get laid.

I had a male classmate in uni who confided in me that he was having trouble meeting girls. He was shy and came from a conservative family. There was a volunteer group that I was a part of that paired English speakers with foreign students for conversational English and they had one on one meetings for coffee as well did group outings. Many of the students were female. I suggested he volunteer for that and try to get comfortable talking to girls (who wanted to chat in English) to help build his comfort level and confidence. He did and he ended up dating one the girls.

I don't have disgust for men struggling and failing with the opposite sex. I married an adult virgin man, and he's my favorite person in the world.

If a guy asked me for help, I would try to help him learn confidence (I had to learn it too, and it made a big difference in my life), maybe a little personal style (you know, basically the Queer Eye treatment). But if he never asked, I would not assume it was my place to butt on in.

I have two sons that I do my best to raise to be good, decent, and happy grown people. But I honestly think it's a little icky/incest-y to overly concern myself with their sex life in any meaningful way. Even if asked, I would probably refer them to someone a little less, well, their own mom.

If one of my sons was struggling, my advice would be tailored to what his problem was personally. Obviously getting fit, healthy, well groomed, if it was social or psychological I'd be advising to say yes to every opportunity to socialise and have healthy hobbies and so on. There are so many reasons and each has a different solutions. At last resort any Western guy can go to Japan, Korea or China teaching English and bag a wife.

If my husband died and I was responsible for having the 'sex talk' with my hypothetical son, I'd tell him to masturbate regularly to take the edge off, so he can be a better judge of which women/men are worth hanging around without his penis making the call for him quite as autocratically. I feel like most males who struggle with women struggle w women because they don’t have an healthy relationship with their mothers or they never had a male figure to show them how women should be treated. If it were my son then I would try to be the best mother I can and teach him how to be friends with women platonically and give him a healthy mindset when it comes to relationships but if he were a family member I would interact with him often to kinda workout his being around/talking to women skill .

Let me tell you a funny story. Once upon a time was in college studying physics, and most of my friends were guys due to the demographics. There was this guy who was fat, awkward and generally unnattractive but would always talk to me about this hot girl he was in love with. He was nice to me and I kind of sympathized with his struggles, so I tried to help him.

Basically, to him, the girl was a slut and a tease and would use him for doing homework, but he couldn't get her out of his head. I would generally try to cheer him up, tell him to work on himself and stop obsessing with girls.

One day, another friend of mine (who was also his friend) revealed to me that it was all a lie. The girl barely knew him. He was lying about having sex with her and many other girls in college, boasting about his "conquests" to his friends. I confronted him about it and he didn't have an answer to why the fuck he did that. Shortly after that the semester ended and he didn't come back for the next one.

The friend who told me about this later revealed that he was also talking to everyone about how he had sex with me. He told me how that's when he figured out that there was something wrong, since he knew me too well to believe I would cheat on my boyfriend with this loser.

That's just one tale, but they were many other times when I tried to offer my sympathy and it ended up with the guy being nuts or obsessed with me. So, it's not that I'm "disgusted" with men who struggle with women. I'm just afraid.

To answer the question, my little brother is a unbelievably socially awkward 20-years-old who is still able to get some girls that throw themselves at him. I would bet he is the nicest, most polite guy to ever exist in this world. We talked about girls a few times, I just told him to keep being nice, but quit being a pushover; to get girls that "just wanna have fun" for a while and stay out of serious relationships until he's older; and to understand that his health, his happiness, his studies and his future career come first, girls come second. He used to have a very low self esteem for some reason, and I worked hard to make him proud of himself. Unfortunately we might be somewhat autistic so I worry about his future and I don't know if I can help while being an awkward potato myself.

I think the premise of your question is flawed (but I will get to it). Women don't have disgust for men who 'can't get sex', but they do have limited sympathy for men who feel (or seem to feel) entitled to sex. And please don't forget the amount of effort women put in to be attractive - you can't access any form of media as a female without being bombarded with images of how men want you to look. We're not just talking hair and makeup here (these take a lot of time, money and effort) but also removing all your body hair, dressing attractively, exercising, toning up - women put a lot of effort into 'getting guys' too, and some of them have very little success - standards of female beauty are extremely high. So I think there's a false dichotomy somewhere at the heart of this - it's not that if men are putting all this effort in, women are putting in none.

I'm also not saying men don't put any effort in, not at all, but I'm saying that some men act like the effort women put in doesn't exist, yet still "rate" women based on the results - Reddit and other sites are literally full of men rating women out of 10 purely on their looks. I have literally never heard a woman rate a guy on a numerical scale, ever. So a lot of men aren't treating women like human beings, but still feel like women should want to have sex with them.

If I had to talk to a young man about this, I would say - not everyone is going to find you attractive, sure - that goes for men and women both. People have types. But if you want a shot with a girl, treat her like a human being. Don't treat her like a number. Don't grade her, or yourself. Treat it as a meeting of two people, not a mating opportunity. Show her you value her as a person - not with an agenda because you can bet your ass she will pick up on that in a nanosecond. Bring something to the table - bring who you are. Say something interesting. Ask her opinion. Listen to her response. She might find you attractive, she might not - but her entire value to you does not rest on that.

Testosterone is a hell of drug and it’s lot when you’re young. It is necessary to go outside and exercise. Correct the imbalance. I would teach him about his feelings. Introspection on why you’re feeling what you’re feeling, good or bad. It’s tough to look in the mirror. Being mindful and adaptable will help immensely in this world. I'm not sure that a guy in his 20s would really listen to his mother's advice. And it's really hard to give any advice or tactics without knowing what his problem is. I had a friend, who constantly fell in love with any girl who would be nice to him, but he never tried to actually ask someone out. Everyone gave him the same advice - just go and talk to her, ask her out, but his main problem wasn't insecurity itself, it was mental problems and my guess is that without a proper professional help he most likely won't be able to overcome them.

Would you advise him when he's very young so he knows how to deal with women when he's older?

If I had a child, I'd help them to find a few hobbies that they liked, preferably at least one that includes physical activity and something that you have to do with other people like dancing or camping. I'd try hard to make sure that they have hobbies and interests in life besides dating, so when time would come they'd sociable enough and well-rounded so they'd be able to get on with different people.

I also think that a good example is important and I hope that my husband and I will be that example. My husband is honest and respectful, he isn't into any techniques at all, he prefers an honest approach. You try your chances out and if you're lucky, you have a date, if not, you try again. There is no any secret.

I’d tell him to do the things he should have been doing before he got into this situation: get hot, get cool, get talented and if he can’t do that - get money. To help with these endeavors he needs a therapist and a pet (preferably a dog, because that creates opportunities for walks in the park and opens other social doors). And he definitely has to quit watching porn.

He needs to improve his physical appearance and be as strong as he potentially can, dress like a person with money and status, he needs to improve his social standing and appear extroverted and socially at ease and find a friend group he can be the “leader” of and go out and do social activities with, and finally he needs to learn some skills that will generate attraction and respect in others.

He should have been playing team sports and cool musical instruments (guitar, piano, bass, or drums, or even just DJing or rapping) as a teenager, not playing video games. Video games are for alone time after dark once you’ve already self improved and built value for the day.

Once he’s as high value as he can be, I’d tell him to not be needy or desperate or “nice” or focus on one girl at a time, I’d tell him his commitment is a prize and he shouldn’t give the girlfriend treatment to girls he hasn’t even kissed yet. But he also shouldn’t hurt other people’s feelings and should be honest. I’d tell him to only ask out girls who display Indicators of interest, even if he’s not attracted to those girls. When asking them out, make it very clear that it’s a romantic date and you’ll be treating them.

I would hope that I'd have guided my son enough to avoid having him be a dweeb. I will let him know that appearance and social skills matter and that just because you are nice to people doesn't mean they are obligated to date you or love you. I will teach him good grooming and tell him no woman wants a man that can't wash his hands or brush his teeth, or that only games and masturbating as his main hobbies. Nobody wants a man like that.

Is this sexually unsuccessful brother bothering to be much help with my problems? Because y'know... with siblings one gives what one easily and gracefully can give but past that point, when you get to stuff that is going to be hours of difficult work over many different occasions, they gotta be giving to be getting. My personal experience of having a sexually unsuccessful brother is he never bothered to help me much. So I dealt with him by just occasionally doing things like trying to expand his social circle, and left it at that.

If they were really shy or needed work I would suggest they go on the sugar baby sites and get a semi platonic sugar baby. Just dating a really hot girl with no pressure can help make it easier. It’s like taking batting practice. Everything is slowed down and easier so they can build confidence.
