Men with a working partner are generally more depressed and anxious than couples in a more traditional role. So says survey from the University of Gent. Sample from 1.054 Belgian heterosexual couples between 18 and 65.

Households were seperated in 3 categories:

  • traditional (man = job ; women = household),
  • 2 breadwinners (man = fulltime employment women = fulltime).
  • other (man = fulltime employment ; women = parttime work)

With the 2 breadwinners situation there were only symptoms when the women's income was higher than the men's income.

Men reported more symptoms when performing more household duties.

Women reported less symptoms when performing more household duties.

The results will be publiced in the scientific magazine Health Sociology Review.
