Advice for a teenager? (self.altTRP)

Advice? Don't take anything you read too seriously. Question everything - but do not discard what you learn. Live for yourself and be yourself, the way of others is not necessarily the path that works best for you. You're going to come across a startling amount of anecdotal evidence that's being praised as fact and a lot of it has no backing other than "this guy wrote a book about it".

Be objective, and do not fall into the trap of being in a TRP mindset 100% of the time and forever. It has a tendency to turn unsuspecting good men into assholes when they start to take it way too seriously.

If you're a teenager, it's entirely likely you've never even encountered the activity that will become your passion. The best thing you can do to better yourself is to try to experience as much as you can and learn as much as you can... What you learn in your core classes isn't what will make you an interesting human being. Practice working hard on projects... if you hate something you've got to do for school, try to find some aspect about it that interests you.

The best thing I ever did in my life was move away from the mindset of "This is hard or scary, therefore it sucks and I won't do it," to the mindset of "This is hard or scary, but I'm going to get through it."

I actually have. I love DIY and mechanical stuff. Plan on becoming a diesel mechanic when I get out of school and finish college. A dream of mine would be to build up and restore some clapped out car from the 50s/60s.

Thanks for the advice.

That's awesome!

In that case, I'd recommend keeping a portfolio of things you've built... pictures and a short writeup of what you did and why you did it. If you want to get into a mechanical engineering program (or something similar) in college, it'll make your application stand out.

Already doing that too actually. I'm taking a basic Diesel mechanics class and a portfolio is a big assignment for the year.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
