Wife said this to me last night through tears because I wouldn't apologise for cracking a joke the other day at dinner in front of her in-laws that 'upset' her.

I felt like punching the air in delight when she said that.

3 months ago before I discovered this sub, beta me would have apologised profusely for something I shouldn't have apologised for.

spot on except don't apologize. Say that "upon reflection, that joke may have been ill-timed" if it truly was bad form. If she's just being feelzy, then a hug and light A&A, something like "I'm so sorry ... That you and your parents are such lightweights that you can't handle a joke. How many whaaaaambulances should I call?".

I don't know if the goal of MRP is to make your SO cry. Now sometimes the hamster can run rampant because of the smallest slight - and that you can fucking ignore.

Though I agree with the others generally - there are times for some softened comfort, but tread lightly - however, the success or failure in her comment depends a lot on how soft (or not) you were before you hardened.
