it is easier to work on my dissertation when my wife is not home. easier to work when no one is around and i am completely alone, to be honest. Today, i asked wife if she was planning on leaving house, as per her usual routine of Sunday grocery shopping and errands. Her reply was unexpected.

I replied with "of course. When you leave im inviting all my bitches over."

she looked at my surprised and said, "You are kidding, right?"

Is this dread?

Don't over think it. She was just playing with you, and you have a playful response back. Her "are you serious" question implies that maybe just a little part of her thinks you might be. It's past now, but this is where "agree and amplify" really shines. Instead of saying "no baby, I was just joking", you go full exaggeration mode and say something so ridiculously outrageous that she knows you are joking, but she also sees that you are not just "pretending" to be playful.

"yeah, I'm serious, I got the camera all setup and I'm planning to film the whole thing to show at the family thanksgiving dinner "

Meta-level: "Are you serious?" could mean anything. Intentionally misinterpret her question. Maybe she was just shocked that you would call them "bitches".

Response: "Do you prefer the term 'hoes'?"

What's an example of passing it? He stuck to it and said he wasn't kidding which isn't the height of A&A, but it doesn't seem like failing to me.

I like what /u/FearDearg2015 said. Re-reading it though, it does sound like he didn't fail it. I took it to mean "of cource i'm not doing that" but if you read it literally he agreed without amplification. It is more like he was lobbed a softball and he bunted instead of hitting it out of the park.

He didn't fail it, but he passed with the bare minimum.

The whole idea behind A&A is that you might be serious, but she can't be sure; that's why we always have a sly grin. This keeps everything in his frame and drags her into it a bit as well as well as keeping the hamster in a brisk jog in the wheel.

By finalizing with "of course not," he maintains his frame, but puts to rest her hamster; it's not bad but not great... It just is.
