Kind of a rant, but this gets on my nerves so much. Any time I read reddit comments, it's totally predictable. The top level comment is a shitty pun. The second highest rated comment is always some guy making a self deprecating post and someone responding by posting "/ r /suicidebywords".

Like, why is every fucking guy on mainstream reddit posting about how much their life sucks, how they never get laid and get no attention from women, and joke about killing themselves? Why is the average guy on reddit so whiny? I realize the irony of me complaining about people complaining, but what is causing this? I feel like comment threads on reddit have gotten exponentially more pitiful lately.

Yeah dude. Next time you're self doubting, wondering your worth, etc...just remember these motherfuckers exist.

Like what in the fuck. How do men live like that?

[–]bruiser184 points5 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

To think these are the people calling us incels because we don't respect wahmyn.

[–]2SirKolbath65 points66 points  (6 children) | Copy Link

Not precisely the same, but for cheap time wasting when I’m waiting for stuff like appointments and I’m bored running flash cards for work training, I’ll browse imgur. Jesus fucking Christ, what is supposed to be so funny about everyone having anxiety and feeling depressed and suicidal? Is it possible to create a legitimately funny meme without mentioning your adderal prescription?

It gets old, I agree.

[–]TheCondor9619 points20 points  (3 children) | Copy Link

They're relatable because the English speaking world (along with most 1st world countries) is experiencing an unprecedented epidemic of anxiety and depression. Also suicide rates are super high, so most of the people making and looking at memes are super depressed. People post and like them because they're sad depressed people.

[–]2SirKolbath8 points9 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

I think people are reporting higher rates of anxiety and depression because it’s “cool” now. Just like in the mid 1990s it was somehow cool to have a tragic backstory that supposedly gave you PTSD. Hell, we still have blue haired freaks “self diagnosing” themselves with it.

Male suicide rates are climbing because nobody gives a shit about men. We are disposable. I believe someone posted a few months ago in the regular forum that male suicide rates have doubled in the last ten years and women’s suicide rates have halved. Women have a large number of resources to help them with any kind of stressor you could name, from sexual assault to financial troubles. Men have... pretty much just this group of subreddits.

[–]MrAgamemnon3 points4 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Women rarely try to kill themselves, 95% of "suicide attempts" by women are just to piss someone off or guilt someone on: just a plea for attention.

We got nothing. If we do speak up about this kind of thing, first of all we "lose face" and secondly, there is no support to be had, only pity. Hell if you tell a woman you tried to kill yourself, she'll need to have a cry about how that's affecting her and how SHE now needs support to cope with this shit and a cock to make her feel normal.

"There is no evidence that the prevalence rates of anxiety disorders have changed in the past years. In cross-cultural comparisons, prevalence rates are highly variable. It is more likely that this heterogeneity is due to differences in methodology than to cultural influences. Anxiety disorders follow a chronic course; however, there is a natural decrease in prevalence rates with older age."

You might find stuff funnier if you stop posting on reddit 24/7

[–]2SirKolbath4 points5 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Is there a step I can take that’ll make me give a fuck what you think?

[–]rugged7912 points13 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah I agree. The shit really does get old.

Usually they do it because they don't have social skills. Should they go out and build some? Yeah. But when they come here, once and a while something sticks. Like a dart in a board. And they go out, and change some shit.

[–]jzekyll310 points11 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

This sub TRP and maybe steroids and fitness encourage self improvement. Social skills and seduction to a lesser extent. Every other sub is a pity party. Maybe not the donald or entrepreneur but apples to oranges.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Probably because most the people on reddit have no purpose and are on benefits or work dead end jobs. They don’t have any self belief. That’s how they got there in the first place.

[–]Endorsed ContributorFereallyRed15 points16 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Read RPS's "incel" post on the main.

It's becoming more socially acceptable to be socially unacceptable.

u/GayLubeOil has two posts that elucidate the phenomenon...

Upsidedown Clown World

and recently...

Escaping the pleasure palace

[–]lotrlotr145 points6 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

People say self deprecating shit in an attempt to have people tell them they’re not as bad as they think.

[–]F_Dingo4 points5 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

It's a race to the bottom really. It's akin to two people fighting over who gets to be last in line or who gets to be the doormat.

[–]Thinkingard2 points3 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

I think of it as people with happy lives lurk or don't appear on this site, or only post on specific subs, so you are noticing the rest. One thing I've noticed about comments is how many people talk about themselves or relate some subject to him/herself. I do this a lot too, because, hell, I don't care about others I care about myself and my thoughts, so it's an easy trap to fall into, as St. Carnegie told us many decades ago. I also have a theory the more lonely someone is the more they go on social media and post, not just lurk. Right now I am in a situation where my family is living far from me and cannot yet move to where I am, so I don't see them much. As a result, I get on things like this more often, whereas before I never had the time or motivation because that was literally not in the cards because of how busy I was.

[–]gimmickless3 points4 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

This website has a low barrier to entry. Low effort to post, low effort to reply, very low effort to upvote. It's baked in. You're going to get some self-congratulatory pity parties...provided you hang around subs where this behavior isn't frowned on.

You can either push against the tide, or find other subs where it's not tolerated. Other people are gonna be who they are, and no single Internet stranger is going to make a difference.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

Good way of putting it

[–]shinywhitedarkness1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

It's a "normalisation of a fetish" (term appears in Cyber Effect from Aiken). Something you wouldn't talk about in public can find a larger audience/group who identify with that something online and it starts to get "normal" for them.

[–]MisplacedSanityP1 point2 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

Life is hard. I would imagine almost anyone on here could empathize with the struggles of young men these days. Sure, they should go out and fucking do something about it, but many of us here didn't until we came across TRP. I know I didn't. They're pathetic, they're weak, they're whiny, but they don't have full agency over that, because they don't see any other way to be. Be grateful you were either born a bit more well-off or you came across this community. You could have easily become them.

[–]carbonhexoxide0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

This. I couldn’t imagine how low I would be if I didn’t hear about TRP getting quarantined and wondering what the fuck it was about.

[–]PhantomNishobrah0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

Most people are unhappy and reddit is an outlet for them to express it. I think it's a simple as that.

[–]rockyp320 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

I guess newer generations invluding me are inclined towards shit like that

[–]Casd120 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

Cus its comforting to know that other people's lives are also shit like yours. Its why people always say, never compare yourself to others. Cus its comforting.

[–]gbnz870 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

People want a place to vent to an audience and you can do it relatively anonymously with no blowback or rejection. Also people think it makes them and the OP feel good if they upvote a sob story.

Reddit comments are generally terrible since you only tend to see what most of what the people who read the thread early agree with and they can easily be manipulated by another force. On the otherhand you can have comments which are unfiltered like 4chan or youtube and its just as bad. No matter where you are you have to deal with junk.

[–]maljo240 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

That's why they are here. Their lives are not going well.

[–]MGRaiden970 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

This generation in America is full of weak men. They never gained confidence, faced their fears, and stayed safe their entire lives. They all also happen to like reddit.

You can't really help them because they don't even want to help themselves. I've tried to help some of them but they have pretty terrible beliefs. They're basically nice guys at the core

[–]zboo1h0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

Same reason why adult males play video games for hours while high on drugs: it gives you the illusion of accomplishment, which will temporarily solve the problem of you feeling like a worthless piece of shit who can't even clean up after yourself or control an aspect of your life at all.

And there are LOADS of these people. Many such cases. Sad!

[–]josh_e_pants0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

If you're self deprecating all the time that's lame, but to be fair, if you never self deprecate it starts to look like you take yourself to seriously.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
