MetaA note on the backup forums (self.TheRedPill)

Since there were a lot of concerns, I will again clarify our plans on our backup forums.

  • We won't be moving unless we have to.
  • The reservation form is on puerarchy.com but due to demand, the forums will be hosted at our new domain: https://forums.red (Special thanks to donations from /u/-Anteros- and others from the IRC)
  • The backup forums will not be hosted on voat or any other reddit clone. We intend on making a jump once, and only once. It would be irresponsible for us to trade one master for another, and frankly I don't trust anybody with the future of TRP that isn't our mod team.
  • Monitization Policy: Our hope and goal is that the new servers will be entirely supported by donations. We are still considering the best ways to do so, but our plan mostly consists of allowing users to donate or sponsor the boards for some level of recognition within the community. We may also try google ads, but honestly those aren't terribly profitable and we just need enough to run the boards. However, there are a few additional details:
    • We also plan on allowing users to "tip" other users/bloggers to show their support for their contributions. We don't want it to be a 'reddit gold' scenario, but an actual way to send money. We're still trying to find the best way to do so and preserve anonymity.
    • We will never monetize the main forum line up, the order of the posts, featuring posts, or removing posts. These will remain entirely community driven (so long as they meet our content guidelines).
    • If we make so many donations that we get filthy rich, I'm going to buy the mods the best whiskey we can afford. They fucking deserve it.
    • We really do plan on spending it on continued operating costs. If you don't trust us, don't donate. I think the mod team here has demonstrated over the past few years exactly where our hearts are on this matter. If you think this has been for profit, then you've got no idea just how many raw hours each mod has put into keeping this place going. The new forums alone have been a labor of love, and I don't expect to be compensated for the time. (And on that note, if you're wondering why we're re-inventing the wheel with our forums, I'll explain below).
  • The puerarchy reservation forum is not SSL. If you don't like this, you can wait. Our new forums are SSL protected. The database passwords are individually salted and encrypted (one-way-hased). You will be able to reserve your reddit name or make a new name if you choose. Your current reddit username will be protected from being registered by other users if it appears in our archives. (We have currently about 23,588 most active subscribers archived).

So why are we reinventing the wheel on these forums?

First of all, the reddit codebase is open source, and we actually started with that. We found it large, bulky, and too many changes needed to be made to get it where we wanted it.

We had the goal of improving the mod tools, making moderation easier, and making the archiving of our old forums simple. After much deliberation and man hours mucking around with the reddit code and a few different forum scripts, the decision was made to do it from scratch.

We have security as a topmost priority. Which is why we are involving a few different members who work in development making sure that this is secure. We will be rigorously testing the scripts as we develop for any security holes, csrf attacks, injection attacks, and the like. Our database is salted and encrypted. Your security is number one.

We have been hard at work over the past few months making sure this happens so that the future of this community is secure. We do so because the team (myself included) care greatly for the outcome of this community.

Just a few days ago I was chatting with another mod, and it occurred to both of us that TRP wasn't just to share information with others, it was for our own sanity, to find other like minded individuals. I know it's saved my life, and I suspect many share that feeling. So let's continue to do what we do best, and rest assured that we have backups in place, and a lot of work is going on behind the scenes.

  • We have the top 1,000 posts archived from /r/theredpill, /r/asktrp, /r/redpillwomen, and /r/ThankTRP

The first thing I did when I saw that Reddit was doing another round of bans is to check if TRP was on the list. I have been a user at Reddit a long time. I have been using it longer than this account, which I logged into for the first time in a couple of years just to prove the length of time of being around reddit. All of that being said I am getting closer and closer to abandoning this shit site. I use to love the site and it has progressively gotten worse year after year.

If the site attempts to censor TRP I am done with it. Reddit was great in the early days, like a libratarian bastion of free ideas and intellectual discussion. It is now a much more SJW playground than anything it ever represented in the past. The majority of Reddit once supported Ron Paul for fucks sake and now Bernie Sanders? The complete 180 this site has gone through is all said in that right there, Paul to Sanders.

The shift of support from liberty to we only want liberty if you can hold our hands and shield our eyes from the bad things. The old Reddit used to have a system of dealing with content that people didn't want to see, it was DV and never saw the light of day. You would have had to gone out of your way and investigate to find the subreddits that were banned anyway.

The thing that I see coming in the mail now that we have the SJW team determined to rid Reddit of evil is where they will draw the line. I think the line is getting to the point subreddits that simple offend SJWs will be on the chopping block and TRP is offensive to SJW so it's not a matter of if they will decide it to ban it, but when. I know you all are ahead of me on this and that is why the contingency plan. I apologize for the block of text I typed on my phone I just wanted to vent.

Happy Birthday. Interesting observation - Reddit started out very free, and its vibrant and open atmosphere attracted people of all stripes and colors. "Reddit is the place to be!" Then it got saturated by overly sensitive morons, and shit starts getting shut down, and voices start getting censored.

Its sort of a microcosm of America. Everybody came here for the freedom and prosperity, and now those freedoms are being stripped, and prosperity is declining across the board.

Really, all transparency does is have people donating based on judgement of your finance rather than gratitude of your service.

For example, if you can't see the donations, but think "TRP really helped, I want to give money to help back" - you'll give money whether $1 or $1,000,000 was made.

If you think "TRP really helped, I want to give money to help back" but you see TRP has made $1,000,000, you're more inclined to go "well TRP doesn't deserve my gratitude, they already have $1,000,000." - but that doesn't change the fact TRP helped you get your shit together, it just makes you less appreciative and more judgemental of it's help.

The transparency is a gratitude killer. I wouldn't give a shit how much TRP made, I'd still want to say thanks because of how much it helped me. But I know not everyone thinks like I do, and many who would have otherwise donated will instead think "ah, well they've got enough." And I think that kind of sucks.

Salting the passwords isn't enough. A plain concat(salt,SHA1(concat(salt,password))) is still pretty easy to crack in the event of a database compromise because hardware to execute standard hash functions is so fast. What you really want is something like scrypt, something designed to combat large-scale brute force attacks.

I don't think this guy knows what he's talking about it. Scrypt is a hashing algorithm, so contrasting it to "salting" is a non-starter. So, the argument he makes against "salting the passwords" also apply to scrypt. I.e.,

A plain concat(salt,SHA1(concat(salt,password))) is still pretty easy to crack

So the real dilemma isn't between salting vs scrypt, but between scrypt and other hashing functions (like SHA1 in his example, which is kind of a strawman to begin with since SHA1 is a weak hash and hasn't been used for password storage in a long time). And there are serious concerns about scrypt and its viability in password storage. I highly recommend checking out this article on how to properly store passwords.

The part that we agree with is that SHA1 is not being used. Further, the salts are individualized. I won't go further, except to say, the passwords are being saved in very secure way and more than meets industry standards.

The passwords are individually salted, and encrypted. It's an internet forum, not a bank. If you're doing things right then you're not reusing password so there's little risk...

If you're still that paranoid that you really think somebody's going to take the time to try to reverse engineer a salted blowfish encryption with a high algorithmic cost to recover literally zero financial or personal information but instead just a random ass password for an anonymous red pill account, I got news for you, you're not that important. But do us a favor, just don't log in. Easy as that.

And if you really think malice- then think about the fact that unless you've logged into the server itself to inspect the code, anything I tell you could be a lie. I doubt you know what you're talking about. scrypt (and its spiritual predecessor, bcrypt) are designed to be very resource-intensive, making brute force infeasible. (It's like PBKDF2.) Obviously, brute-forcing SHA1 is fast because it's a function designed to be fast. While it's possible to compute every possible bcrypt function (it's deterministic, after all), the function is designed to make that computationally infeasible. bcrypt and scrypt have built-in salt.

Your scrypt hit piece was also thoroughly debunked on HN when it was posted.

A better option is to not send or store the passwords at all, but use SRP which enables both server and client to arrive at a shared secret without ever sending the password over to the server.

Inevitably, it'll force the best posters to create good content in exchange for money. Seems good, but it will kill the natural process of having inspiration and writing good shit.

Percentage of best posters will try to produce posts for money. Forcing, quality will go down. They will shape posts to fit the community. Which is the best way to become self funded circle jerk.

Look at GLO posts. He wrote a few where he is trying to sell his t shirts, which is fine. But this few are artificial and reader can sense it. Forced content, shaped, molded.

His "free" posts on the other hand, are top notch.

Just use bootstrap and you only have to have one set of code for mobile, desktop and tablets and whatever else there is. You don't even need an app or anything.

Nothing of value from me, just a simple "Thank you!" to display my gratitude for all the work you and the mods do.

The new forum looks great and I have to admit, that for some time now, a part of me wishes for the removal of the sub by the reddit administration, so everybody can free their minds of ultimately irrelevant issues about what reddit has and will become, and invest their energy in some usefull and top-notch content.

Just a few days ago I was chatting with another mod, and it occurred to both of us that TRP wasn't just to share information with others, it was for our own sanity, to find other like minded individuals. I know it's saved my life, and I suspect many share that feeling.

This especially hits home with me since it is exactly what TRP is to me. Just keep doing what you are doing and the way you are doing it, and many more shall follow and finally find answers and solutions and end their struggle.

Why have you opted not to move when it has already become evident by the fact that I have not seen any post from TRP on the front page regardless of if I manually UNSUBSCRIBE everything else so that TRP is my only subscription or not?

It's already clear this area is being censored and is literally one step away from the obscene nonsense happening to other subs. The sheer size of this sub is likely the only thing keeping it in check.

Actually, I'm rather confident you're juggling enough threats from Reddit that we don't need to elaborate on and we all know where most people will be going. The real question is - why even bother with theater? Pack up and move.

I went on and registered, but it's unlikely RP subs will be banned. Not anytime soon, anyway. If anything, this is what they make quarantining for.

And if you ask me, they should quarantine us. Whoever needs to discover it eventually will do so, and it won't be via a post on front page. Other than that, the less attention we get, the better.

I'd like to make a request!

Themes, specifically because I use night mode in RES, and would love my TRP viewing to remain mostly the same. I'm one of those people: the original layout is okay, but if I can have black/white, I'll take it.

As it's an aesthetic request, I don't expect it to be too high on the list, but if it can be banged out quickly or got to eventually, that'd be dope.

I have a forum in place but I wouldn't want to risk things consider how touchy TRP subject matters are, however I am dedicated enough to launch a platform that will work in conjunction with TRP.

Sure, but this isn't just some site, I can cover a small sub-section, at the moment what I see is a basically a lot information but little organization. I plan to fix that via that outlet. It's an experiment, I will give it a year and then see if it works.

Obviously it will run ad free, since I can cover the expenses myself.
