ESV vs. NKJV?? (self.askRPC)

submitted by operationveritas

Hi,

I want to get a new bible that I'll be able to keep for a very long time and to study out of. Coming back to the age old debate of which one to get, I've looked online through many explanations of what the differences are but I still don't really understand. There are others apart from ESV and NKJV but these two seem to be the most common. Does one preach a different word to the other? Which one is more suited to the sub/which one do you guys own?

Thanks.

Both are good translations. I read the ESV for the first time last year, and while it is a good, accurate translation it doesn't "flow" as well for me when I read it. My preferred version is the NKJV. While it's not always the easiest to understand for certain passages, it's very faithful to the original. Here's a comparison of different versions I've read, you may find it helpful.

But to answer your question directly, either is fine but I prefer the NKJV.

You can have both! And about 35 other translations all for FREE. BibleGateway.com

Personally I like the NLT because it has language that makes application to your daily life a little easier. But I know that most mainstream preachers use the ESV version.

I personally use a 1991 NIV LAB (life application bible) as my main, whilst also having a geeze through the message for a comparison on certain things. I know the new NIV's got rid of gendered language so as to be politically correct, so I would stick to one of the earlier ones.

Can't really go wrong with ESV or NKJV either though, it's all a matter of personal preference. I like the wording in my NIV, its strong and easy to remember for me. Which is what matters when purchasing a Bible I think.

But some dudes might prefer the wording of the ESV or even the KJV! Read through a familiar passage with the different versions on Bible Gateway. You should also think about the size of it, if there's space for notes on the pages and maybe a red letter one. My LAB is way too big to lug around and it's hard to write notes in it (probably because its hinge is busted lol).

"Paster Anderson here with faithful word Baptist chu--BURN, DEGENERATES!"

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
