This is my attempt to make the most comprehensive guide to fighting acne specifically tailored for MEN. I fought acne for most of my life, finally getting it under control by going through all the tropes, appointments, figuring out what's bullshit and what's worth trying. It's important to make the distinction, men and women are VERY different. Therefore, the battles between acne are very different. The SCA subreddit has a ton of good info, but it's wading through a lot of things that may work for your little sister and not necessarily you. It's a much more talked about issue between females, despite acne being INSANELY easier to fight as a woman than a man.

A man's life breeds acne.

  • Testosterone, the literal essence of man, increases acne.

  • A man's diet, in a calorie surplus to gain/retain muscle, usually resorts to many foods being added to the diet. Higher dairy content, higher carb loading, and higher glycemic load all seem to aggravate and cause acne.

  • A man's workout, usually to increase muscle mass, can increase bacteria on the skin from sweating and increase hormones (testosterone.) This can cause and aggravate acne.

  • A man's life usually consists of more labor, stress (despite not being socially acceptable for a man to show this) and has less socially acceptable methods of treating skincare. Most skincare products are made for, advertised to, and bought by females.

  • To fight their own acne problems girls can; diet without losing muscle, tan to hide acne, wear makeup to hide marks, control their hormones with little to no side effects, have a billion products marketed to them, and change their life to fight acne while still maintaining feminine attraction. Put simply, if girls had to increase testosterone to fight acne, this would show them how a man approaches the fight. However, for some cruel reason our attraction is not only based in physical displays of testosterone, but in lack of it when it comes to our skin.

Now despite acne being much more aggressive and tougher to fight for a man, females still consider a clear face much more attractive. Society will consider you less attractive, happy, healthy, and even successful if you have acne scars on your face. I do not believe a man should ever resort to lowering his hormones or testosterone to fight acne, therefore none of the treatments listed will entertain this. A man must have testosterone more than he must not have acne.

I shouldn't have to list the benefits of having clear skin, but it can affect every aspect of your life. You wouldn't want to have a shitty haircut or wardrobe, so why carry a shitty complexion with you? It's not feminine to have great skin, and isn't just about getting laid either. Look at the studies, it will help your image at work, in the gym, and everywhere else you bring your face.

In order to recommend how to fight your acne I'm going to grade severity based on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the most severe. A zero would be a man with no acne, despite anything he throws into and on his face and body. If this is you, congratulations because you have hit a genetic jackpot and a ton of stress is removed from your life because of this. Also, fuck you.

  1. Mild acne. No more than 2-3 small to medium lesions. Few blackheads, small natural pores. Little to no inflammation. Typically no body acne. Easily concealable, usually not a huge deal in attraction unless you are a celebrity, etc.

  2. Mild acne with moderate breakouts. Usually only an acne level 1, but suffers occasional breakouts consisting of 4-7 lesions. During a breakout, light to moderate inflammation, visible blackheads, and 1-2 painful zits (cysts.) Breakouts can usually create insecurities if timed with important events, but many people with this level go untreated as it's not "bad enough to treat."

  3. Moderate acne. Moderate amounts of lesions at a time on face. Usually no less than 5 except for "lucky" weeks. Can have large pores, very visible blackheads, moderate inflammation, usually several spots on back/shoulders. Tricky to conceal without good makeup experience. Can hamper attraction, usually starts taking toll on self confidence at this level. Most attempt at least a few therapies to treat acne here.

  4. Moderate to severe acne. Several active lesions. Stage where scarring takes large toll on skin. Several whiteheads, blackheads can take up large amounts of skin especially on forehead and nose. Painful cysts appear as red mountains on the skin. Affects face, neck, back, arms, shoulders, arms, chest, etc. Self confidence is a fraction of what it should be. Incredibly difficult to cover up. Occasionally gets decent days but takes time to repair skin.

  5. Severe acne. Crucifies attraction. Several painful cysts, impossible to cover up even for a fucking hollywood makeup artist. Controls life. Causes not only emotional depression, insecurities, and anxiety but physical pain as well. Girls usually won't even look at you.

Many people go through different stages of these, someone can be a 4 as a teenager and a 2 as an adult. I was around a 3 or 4 and now get the occasional small zit every week. I believe treatments should differ based on severity and how you rate on the scale. There are things every person with acne should be doing, however recommending isotretinoin to a 1 or 2 is a bit extreme. I'll now list treatments based on severity. Simply because a treatment is recommended for a 2 doesn't mean it won't be an effective treatment for a 4 either. Also, more difficult acne in the 2 scale might even require what is recommended for a 4. Acne is intricate and caused from several factors. The only "1 size fits all" approach is isotretinoin and even that isn't a guarantee.

There are also different types of acne. 3 main types are bacterial, fungal, and hormonal. Bacterial acne typically has large whiteheads, cysts, and the look of "traditional" acne. Fungal acne will have much smaller zits that seem to appear at once and cover a large area of skin. This almost looks more like a rash than large zits. Bacterial acne will mainly be fought from the outside killing the bacteria that causes acne known as Propionibacterium acnes, or P. Acnes. Fungal will mainly be fought from within with diet changes and using products containing yeast killers like zinc pyrithione. Hormonal acne is the toughest acne for men, due to no easy way to alter hormones without side effects. This will take the most experimenting from the list.

Dermatologists are usually recommended but I found they're are far too many shitty ones out there with a 1 size fits all approach and don't have the time to try several things on you. That being said, some of these options are prescriptions which you will need a dermatologist to write a prescription for. I tried using OTC options first. If you are a 4 on the scale, you should technically be doing everything on the 4 scale and above for maximum results. I tried including products widely available at most stores. As weird as it is, don't use products that say "For Men." They typically are inferior and marketed towards men who need a strong blue bottle, with the scent of sandalwood and cedar to regenerate masculinity that has been drained from caring for his face. Just use the girl's shit, it's better.



  • Improve water intake substantially.

  • Moderately cut foods from diet containing excess sugar, excess carbs, excess dairy (not including yogurt.)

  • Include exercise into weekly routine.

  • Add a quality facewash (lukewarm water, always) at night or twice a day (Cerave foaming cleanser, Cetaphil gentle cleanser, Neutrogena fresh foaming cleanser are all good. Stay away from beads/scents/exfoliating/baking soda or fruit based. If it sounds gimmicky, stay away.)

  • Practice not touching your face, you might not realize how often you do it. I did it at the gym all the time without thinking about it, transferring bacteria from the infested equipment to my pores.

  • Include moisturizing into your routine (big box stores typically have a ton, but get one specifically for your face. I use CeraVe PM but it's outrageously overpriced I'll admit.)

  • Do laundry regularly especially with shirts, sheets, and pillowcases. Do not sleep in your own oils every night.

  • Control stress as best you can by meditating, sleeping properly, and cutting out toxic people.


  • Add a BHA or AHA exfoliant in your routine to combat breakouts. (Stridex pads but only the red box, not the green, Paula's choice BHA liquid, or The Ordinary. Glycolic Acid 7%.) AHA's will make you more prone to sunburn, BHA's which are typically products containing salicylic acid will not however can dry the skin so make sure you moisturize. Use only on a dry face, after cleansing.

  • Significantly cut out dairy (not yogurt,) carbs, and especially sugar. Eat whole foods (eggs, meats, veggies, fruits, oats.) Do not eat processed food from a box, it's not that hard fatass.

  • Make sure your body has what it needs IE vitamins and minerals especially: zinc, vitamin d3, vitamin a, omega 3, and a probiotic if necessary for gut health. Gut health is incredibly relevant to acne and especially fungal acne.

  • If you sweat, wash your face after. I like to lift in the morning so I can shower immediately after. I also sit in a sauna for 20 minutes beforehand. This is good for your all around health especially skin.

  • Use a form of anti-fungal on your face if you believe you have fungal acne (head & shoulders, noble formula bar, or Nizoral shampoo.)

  • Use Benzoyl Peroxide if you believe you have bacterial acne. This will kill the bacteria that causes acne. (I did not have good effects with this, however everybody is diferent.) Use only on a completely dry face to fight burn marks. Use a thin layer of 2.5%, no more than 5%. This will bleach your clothes and sheets so pass on it if you have an expensive wardrobe.

  • Look into an oil cleansing method. If traditional cleansers and treatments don't seem to be working you can cleanse with oil. This is an effective way to leave your face's natural oils in tact which are necessary and to also strip the bad stuff. SCA has a great guide on this.


  • Look into OTC topical creams such as Differin, sulfur, niacinamide (I swear by this stuff,) or 10% azelaic acid. All can be effective without a prescription.

  • If OTC creams don't seem to be effective, a dermatologist will be able to look into some of the stronger creams (clindamycin is very effective, as well as dapsone and retin-a.) Again, identify which type of acne you believe to have and go into the derm appt. with a general idea to recommend to the Dr.

  • Prescription antibiotics are not my favorite solution, but can be effective. These include doxycycline, amoxicillin, and others. The idea is to kill the bacteria from within which can help if body acne is a great concern, however these also can effect gut health and create immunities to antibiotics. Try to stay away unless these are miracle cures. A derm made me go on amox for 2 years and getting off of it lead to the worst breakouts of my life. I prefer the method of using a probiotic and increasing gut health to fight acne as opposed to killing everything.

  • Do NOT take any androgen blockers. These are becoming increasingly popular due to the effectiveness with females. An example would be spironolactone. These can lead to gynocamastia (bitch tits) and really mess with your endocrine system.

  • Look into light therapy, and even try UV tanning. Most girls cringe at this on SCA but UV light both kills bacteria and fungus that can cause acne. Don't go overboard, just a few minutes and never burn. See if you have positive results in a month and if not don't continue.

  • It is thought now that high estrogen in men can cause acne. Zinc and Vit B6 can help keep estrogen at bay, but more serious estrogen blockers might work as well. Use this as a last resort again, your endocrine system is very delicate.

  • Look into Curology. I used this and they tailor a cream for your face by you uploading pictures. It's $40 for a 2 months supply which isn't bad but it's not cheap either. Worked extremely well for me. If you want to, you can get a free trial and if it works, get a prescription for the same formula from your doctor and attempt to get insurance to cover it. Or buy the raw ingredients online (mine is a mixture of clindamycin, niacinamide, and azelaic acid.)


  • Look into isotretinoin, or accutane. It has some severe side effects in some people (depression, very dry skin, may be hard on heart and liver) but it is the most effective solution on this list. You typically need a prescription, but I know guys on steroid cycles that get it from the internet. It will 100% no doubt about it cause insane birth defects. Do not get your girl pregnant with this, if you have plates you are fucking on it tell them. Don't be a cunt. I'm talking serious birth defects. (side note, if you are not on it you can tell plates you are taking it to convince them to not "skip" a week of birth control. girls want your money for 18 years, but not if it means giving birth to a severely deformed baby. it's great insurance.)

  • Get tested for allergies. Common food allergies might be a contributing factor and if everything else fails this could tell you if a gluten or dairy allergy was affecting it all along.

  • Get blood work done, check to see if you're in good health. Sometimes inbalances in your blood levels can cause acne.

  • Clindamycin wipes on the body can help keep breakouts at bay, especially from sweating during workouts.

  • Professional chemical peels can help get your skin back to looking less scarred/red. They can be expensive, and painful but yield good results.

  • Professional extractions again can be expensive and painful, but can give you fast results if you really need a turnaround in a few days. Had this done once, seriously fucking hurts.

  • Professional facials. I prefer the ones that are more clinical than "spa like." Hydrafacials are more and more common and suck bacteria out of the skin while coating it with a moisturizing layer of hyaluronic acid. Again, these can be expensive.


  • At this point, get on isotretinoin. The valuable time from your life you are wasting letting acne control you isn't worth the few side affects you'll get from this. Your other option is to wait until it clears up and get tons of treatments for scarring which will be even more expensive.

This list is by no means every solution out there. Some guys will figure out that watching 5 minutes of The View caused their acne but I'm not going to include something that will most likely only help one fucking person. In other words, these are general treatments and not a conclusive list of every available treatment.

Feel free to add what worked for you below, I might have missed some stuff. Just remember, sometimes there is almost nothing you can do to completely get rid of acne (even isotretinoin) simply because you are a man that has testosterone coursing through his blood. It's not fair, but it's the price you pay for bigger muscles. Hopefully one day we will have an even more effective pill to cure it without side effects but until then, I hope this list helps you out.

I can personally vouch for accutane. While I never had severe acne, it was persistent. I tried all washes, routines, etc to no avail. I will say the following about the side effects:

-It does not cause depression, I have not experienced this, nor does my doctor agree with the claim of this side effect. Take a step back and think about the bulk of the patients on accutane: Acne-riddled adolescents. That group is highly susceptible to depression anyways, and the "initial breakouts" caused by Accutane can be enough to push them over the edge. It will cause fatigue and soreness, but that is not depression.

-Females are the only patients who have to worry about birth defects since they are the only people capable of giving birth. Not that it is a good idea, but male sperm is fine to impregnate a female while on accutane without increased risks of birth defects.

-You need to avoid drinking too much alcohol while on accutane. It sucks, but since the medication is metabolized by your liver, getting shitfaced will really hurt you. You won't feel any different, but you will risk permanently damaging your liver. My doctor believes that drinking in moderation is fine while on accutane, although some suggest that you not drink at all.

-Chapstick. Get lots of it.

Depression/suicidal thoughts are a rare side effect of accutane but they do occur. I took it and had to get off within a month because it gave me anhedonia/depersonalisation and I was far past the teenage angst about my acne. As soon as I got off it the symptoms disappeared within a week or two, and I've seen it happen to multiple family friends. Depression is listed as a side effect by the manufacturer itself and just because your doctor disagrees with that doesn't make it untrue. Don't state your conjecture with such surety, especially not when people's mental health is at stake.

Agreed. I took Accutane, it didn't work. Went back to the docs and had the dose increased.

After about 6 month I had to stop taking it. I preferred life with acne over the side effects. I was suicidal, had dry bleeding lips, dry bleeding nose canal, it's not a miracle cure for everyone unfortunately. I realise I was one of the unlucky 5%.

I waste years reading about and experimenting with things as the OP. I was obsessed and rotated everything in my diet to remove inflammatory foods etc. Nothing worked. It was all bullshit. The creams and stuff I experimented with only made it worse. I hated myself and hated life.

I started self medicating with accutane and it was THE BEST decision I ever made. You don't even need that much. 40mg at most or 10-20mg ED will make your skin clear and shrink your pores making your skin appear sooth as fk.

    Accutane is extremely common for men on cycle. Probably about 1/4 of the people I know that cycle use accutane. I would take 20mg/day on cycle and I could bath in mayonnaise and not get a breakout.

      All the steps with Accutane on cycle are effectively what I'd recommend to do on cycle in the first place. Don't use anything harsh on the system. So probably injectables only. Get bloodwork done before cycle, four weeks in, and after PCT which should also already be happening. Be very limited on alcohol consumption.

      this. i do the same and I swear it was best decision i made in my life, even i have something like moderate acne. BUT acne back (smaller) in 2 year and I start use it in micro dose (20-30mg in week), work just fine.

      Then i notice effects on my mood even on so small dose. I found research about iso effects on brain and hormones. I decide use only BP cream and eat zinc. Work less fine, but enough for me.

      Be carefull and look for your mood, iso decrease dopamine receptors and hipotalamus.

      Can vouch for accutane 100%. Suffered from severe acne back when I hit puberty, people used to look at me like I was a monster. 6-12 months later after using accutane I had clearer face than everyone around me. Really life-changing and made me so happy.

      I second the accutane option.

      Good thing to do in monk mode since your dry, non-drinking ass will be limited in terms of going out. If you have insurance, do your research and get it done, it’s a no-brainer imo.

      The effects really stack after a few months because of the accutane building up in your system. If you are already depressed I think you will feel worse on accutane. But it will get better and go away after treatment is finished.

      Piggybacking off this comment for a small PSA. If anyone has any trouble with chapped lips, first off drink more water, but if you want an instant solution use a chapstick with lanolin. Burt's Bees is a common one with it.

      Accutane absolutely can cause depression. I was on it for a few months and while I was already depressed to begin with, after I was on the medication it made me FUCKING SUICIDAL. EVERY DAY. It was terrifying to feel that some weird chemical imbalance was occurring and fucking up my head in a very severe way. I had to push through it because I knew it was just the drugs but I hated it so much. Cleared my face though, the doctors told me it would not fail at doing that.

      I did accutane. Very effective but the dry lips were killer, and I hated using Chapstick... So I'd take my pills for a few days, then skip a few days. Needless to say it wasn't as effective as it could have been, but moved me from a 4 to a 1 eventually

      I did accutane and it made me break out so hard. Huge cyst on my cheek the surface area was the size of a golf ball. It had multiple exits of blood and puss. After 6 months I rarely would get zits. Now after a year and a half I get a zit once a month. I still have scarring.

      I would do accutane after every single other thing has been tried properly.

      I experienced some bad side effects from accutane: 1. Nose bleeds ALL THE TIME 2. Joint pain, i also got extremely bad plantar fasciitis 3. Flushing - my skin was incredibly red almost the entire time while i was on accutane, it was so bad that just the thought of talking to someone would make my face beet red. 4. My lips became so chapped that chapstick wasn’t enough, i had to use vaseline/ aquaphor

      But even with all of these side effects, being able to have perfect skin during college made it completely worth it and i would recommend it to anyone with bad acne

      I had bad acne, had to do 3 cycles of acutane. I’d do it again, my skin is really nice now and I don’t have to do anything, maybe 1-2 times a week I’ll use a face wash in the shower, and use sunblock when I’m outside in the sun to prevent aging

      Had a lot of acne in high school. I first started getting them when I was ~13 and cleared up at 17. Periods of intense working out sonetimes brought back my acne.

      My acne were pretty severe, enough for my parents to consider accutane, but my experience with it was overwhelmingly negative, so I went off it after a couple of months.

      The main side effect was loss of energy. I would tire out really quickly, making sports practice sessions (2 hours every day + games on weekends) and PE in school that used to be easy extremely exhausting. My times on various medium/long distance runs went up, compared to before and after I stopped taking it.

      This is just one guy's anecdotal experience, but accutane is not to be fucked with. For anyone considering accutane, I'd try waiting it out first, especially if you're young (<20).

      I second this. Currently 5 months into my treatment, and let me say this has changed my life!! I used to get painful cysts that really damaged my confidence and made it difficult for me to go out and see people.

      Now, my skin is clearer than it ever has been! I know this probably sounds like a proactiv testimonial but let me be clear: isotretinoin works wonders by increasing skin turnover and drying up the sebaceous (oil secreting) glands. Incredible!

      I’m strictly carnivore now and my face has never looked or felt better. Complexion is clear and even now. For whatever reason, my skin doesn’t get nearly as dry as it used to. Dandruff has also disappeared almost completely.

      Fibre only helps bowel move quicker. We are used to pooping once or twice a day so fibre is recommended to keep that lifestyle going. Without fibre you will poop caveman style. Once in 2-3 days. Physiologically there is nothing wrong with that. Adjusting to it mentally takes time.

      The basic skin care routine goes

      • Cleanse (Cerave Foaming) (Cerave Hydrating)

      • Chemical Exfoliant (Stridex Pads) (Neutrogena Acne Def Lotion)

      • Moisturize (Neutrogena Hydro/Day) (Cerave PM/Night) (Rosehip Oil/Night)

      • Spot Treat (Any Benzol Peroxide)

      • Sun Screen (Australin Gold Spf 50)

      The example products are from my past and present routine. Your skin type honestly wont change much unless your sensitive to an ingreident. At the very leat everyone should use a cleanser and moisturizer, change pillow case once a week, drink water and nooo pickiinngg. Germs on face = pimples and irritated = scarring

        I never experienced severe acne but 2 things that definitely caused it were dairy and sugar. You should drop dairy anyway it's not the touted healthy drink. It's a baby serum, a bunch of hormones from another specie and it's processed in a disgusting way. Are you some cattle? It will also make it harder to reach your ideal shredded physique with all that extra useless fat and estrogen.

        Vitamin C (injesting it) clear up acnee pretty nicely too and boost collagen production for a nice skin.

        Water, alot of water.

        Acutane works like a charm, but it is no joke.

        I was prescribed it in high school and have little to no acne now. There are some serious side effects though.

        Definitely start drinking more water, always have chap stick and carry around moisturizer because your skin will dry out. Also this shit is not to be mixed with alcohol so follow your dermatologist's instructions carefully.

        But it will help you get rid of acne, 100%

        Do you change your shirt regularly? If yes, another thing you could try would be changing your detergent. I get issues with the regular detergents and now use one without perfume, colorant, preservatives. It also got a recommendation by some German allergy and asthma interest group. Don't use too much detergent, just enough to get clean laundry, and if your washing machine has the option try some not "save water" mode.

        Also, how clean are your pillow and your mattress?

        I'm very clean and hygienic... also I change t-shirts 4 times a day sometimes... (hate a sweaty t-shirt...) and if I don't have the time to take a shower when changing shirts I just use baby wipes...

        so cleanliness isn't the problem...

        detergent thing is an excellent idea... i'll try that... see what happens... although I don't have any allergies as far as I know (was tested as a kid)...

        I think it's more of a genetic thing (hormones)...

        Your timing on making this post is interesting. I've lifted for 10 years and had bouts of chest/back acne for about the first 4.

        Eliminating dairy was what cured it for me.

        But the last couple months, it's returned to a lesser degree. I'm stopping my current creatine supplement to see how that helps out — there's a lot of mixed opinions on whether or not creatine is an acne enabler.

        I believe it can. Although it may not for everybody.

        Your note about wiping off with the clindamycin wipes is good. Even dabbing the excess sweat off before you make it home to the shower helps, I find.

        When I hit puberty I suffered a lot from acne. My entire body and face was full of acne and very oily. And when I say full, I mean the ENTIRE body & face was covered. I was the only kid in the school with that much acne - until 1 year later, where every single acne was gone. I had literally none anymore, while my classmates had 2-3 around.

        Wanna know the secret? ACCUTANE. Use accutane. Talk to your doctor, say you tried everything, tell him/her to give you prescription for accutane. It will cure you 99% of times. The process takes 6 months and you'll have to deal with some side-effects including dry skin (really dry), but it is worth it. Losing all my acne changed my life.

        Haha I just came back from the dermatologist and read this. I've always had acne vulgaris. When I was in my teens it was vulgar. Now it's moderate. I recently started having breakouts again after a few years so I paid the doc a visit. I have oily skin and oily skin is prone to breakouts. I am not in my teens or my twenties either. So for anyone who thinks it's simply age related, it's not. It depends on your diet, your gut, your skin type, stress, your lifestyle and your genetics.(my mum has bad skin too). Oily skin on the other hand does make you like 5-10 years younger.

        I have done so many treatments and peels at various stages since I was 20 that my skin has become thin and sensitive so there is a lot of things I can't do. For example apply benzoyl peroxide at this point even for 10 minutes, burns my skin

        If you have acne prone skin you should definitely keep a skin regiment going cuz just when you think everything is good...It's back.

        Wash your face two to three times a day, apply a non comodogenic moisturizer and sunblock. When you want wash your face, use a wet wipe.

        For medication, speak to your doctor. If yr getting chemical peels or laser shots, get it done once every 3-6 months depending on your affordability. I have only just started getting more consciously steady about it otherwise I would just wait for the skin to act up and wait months and years and not take care of it properly. But once you have a break out, you are too late.

        God I do envy people who don't have to deal with this bullshit.

        Hi, some thoughts.

        You as a man can:

        • Change your diet without losing muscle. There is such thing as a plant-based diet that gives you all the good fats, carbs, and proteins you want/need for gaining muscle. Having a plant-based diet is the best thing you can do your you skin and overall health.
        • Wear makeup to hide marks. If you buy the right products and blend well, it will look completely natural.
        • Buy products marketed towards women. Skin is skin. Although I think most cleansers and moisturizers are gimmicky so you need to know what you're buying, just because they're not marketed to men, doesn't mean you can't use them!

        As for the hormonal birth control, the amount of side affects is tremendous. I advise all women to avoid artificial hormones like the plague. They have been attributed to cervical cancer, infertility, depression, suicide, and even more terrible things.

        I am a little worried about all the washing/chemicals you are putting on the face and in your system. Acne is caused by an imbalance. Surface treatments and chemicals don't address the imbalance, if anything it makes things worse.

        When you wash your skin with anything other than just water and friction, you dry it. So the glands surround that area secrete more oil to compensate for the dryness, making your skin oily quicker than if you had just used water. So you are fighting yourself.

        Gut health is incredibly relevant to acne and especially fungal acne.

        This should be your first point. All the chemicals you ingest including protein shakes and processed vitamins messes with your body. If you have a sever breakout mentally or physically (for this post physically), you need to take a step back from the carb loading, eat non processed foods with lots of leafy greens and just wash your face with water and friction.

        These are situations where you body is asking for help to regulate itself. At these points give it time and peace to reach that equilibrium on its own. Any attempt to speed the process only will exacerbate things.

        Gut health and skin health are closely related. So much so that taking probiotic (yes, bacteria for gut health) powders and liquids and applying topically will help most people with skin issues, provided that you stop cleansing so frequently.

        Only in recent modern times have we been so obsessed with being clean. Its abnormal and harmful for the skin microbiome. showers and twice a day cleansing regimens mean the beneficial bacteria on your skin are non existant. It should be bi weekly spot cleansing in the creases of the body. Or spot clean daily with probiotic sprays, liquids, yogurts etc. To allow the chance for your beneficial bacteria to grow and for you skin to benefit.

        Since no high tech, box store, celebrity/doctor endorsed solution worked for me Ive adopted the regimen as follows to cultivate my beneficial bacteria and have had the most success with skin appearance.

        p.s. No one has ever said I stink even close friends/girls, yes I gym, yes im active and sweat. i use an aloe vera deoderant

        For body: Bi weekly (sometimes longer) spot cleansing showers and general shampooing and conditioning.

        For face: Never cleanse use probiotics, like Inner Eco unflavored, probiotic powders on wet face, or Mother Dirt rinse off with water; this spreads the bacteria while face is damp I apply an oil like avocado oil or sweet almond witch hazel optional and great cut out trigger foods. for me peanuts, wheat, dairy

        I had cystic for a while. Big nasty ones. This regime worked for me:

        2x a day for a few weeks, then down to 1x, then eventually every time necessary.

        1. HOT water, as hot as possible without scalding. Apply sylicilic acid wash.

        2. Then, rinse with COLD and pat til a little damp and apply a simple as possible lotion containing 10% benzyl peroxide.

        Takes 4 weeks before you're clear but it works forever.

        I tried drinking massive amounts of water and eating healthy to an almost obsessive degree and it did not get rid of my acne. I still am in the process of fighting it but the best product I have ever come across is rodan and fields “unblemish” . It is about $150 so it’s pricey, but if you have acne this cost is an investment in your future- something that will increase your quality of life by a high degree. I have a lot of acne scars too and I’m about to start using a derma roller. This is basically what looks like a lint roller but instead of tape, it has micro needles all over it. The needles penetrate your skin, causing your face to produce new collagen- you are also supposed to rub your face before and after with a certain liquid that has vitamins in it that helps stimulate collagen growth.

        I would definitely not recommend accutane. The side effects are awful and it's not worth the risk. I had cystic acne in my 20s and after wasting money on every otc treatment imaginable I finally but the bullet and paid out of pocket for a dermatologist. Once a week I'd go in and consult with a doctor who prescribed me doxycycline. Then I'd see an aesthetition who would give me a cleansing with a mile cleanser, then she would stay every fucking sit with a lancet and squeeze the puss out. Afterwards she's wipe my face down with liquid nitrogen then put a charcoal mask on. After washing the mask off she'd finish with a moisturizer. I also was prescribed clidomycin and retin-a. It was a long time ago so I'm not 100% on the order of things but it only took a couple months before it was completely cleared up.

        One day I showed up for an appointment and two of the women behind the desk were giving me strong vibes. I hooked up with both at different at times and that's how I knew that the treatments had done their job.

        If you suffer from cystic acne, do yourself a favor and find a dermatologist who has a competent aesthetition on staff. Before you spend money ask about the treatments that I mentioned and it will be money well spent

            i only cleaned out my acne at around 31 years old. nothing worked, at least not permanently.. what has worked was getting a clarisonic and their soft brush heads. using natural soap to wash my face with and use it as lather for the clarisonic. then after brushing with clarisonic, use raw organic unfiltered apple cider vinegar on my face. for the first week it burned like a motherfucker, but then the skin gets used to it. overnight i could see the difference. now i only do it once a week to maintain. haven't had a pimple in years.

            • Vitamins A and D. Don't know which one it is as I started taking both at the same time. But one helps with my acne. Probably Vitamin A. I take 20k UI of both per day.
            • Zinc helps
            • Nofap... haven't heard this often but it seems to help me.
            • Drink water
            • Don't touch your face, and I know "dude just don't touch your face" is a meme but seriously don't touch your face. One touch. That's all it takes for a pimple to break out, for me, and every current breakout you even touch gets irritated and lasts all the longer.

            This is all good advice. Different things work for different people. Dairy is a huge contributor to a lot of people's acne. I suffered real bad, like edge of suicide bad for 20 years. I even took leprosy medicine from some specialist who had a brilliant idea. In the end what fixed my problem was Soolantra. I apply just a little around my eyebrows (area between my eyes) and it somehow magically keeps my whole face clean. If you have reached your wits end with other options, research Soolantra. It's used to treat mange and mites in dogs and cattle, but in the last few years has been formulated for use on humans. Super-effective for rosacea.

In my case plants and products containing iodine should be avoided: All kinds of onion as well as fast food and grain (some fertilisers contain iodine) In case you didn't cover that one, put it on the list then. You did well, that's hell of a work you've put into that.

              I’m 15, and so my skin is much more prone to acne because of the hormones, boosts in testosterone, etc...but my acne was a 4 on the list; it was horrible, and no topical treatments would work. I’ve been on Accutane for 5 months now, about to start my 6th (and final) month. I started the first month with one 30mg pill a day. Then they bumped it up to two 30mg a day and I’ve been sitting at that for the past months.

              The difference it’s made has been amazing. My face has went to a 4 to a 1, if even that. My skin isn’t flawless, but the only problems are very minute amounts of blackheads, but even they are going away.

              The treatment isn’t even quite done yet has changed my life and been so successful. The side effects weren’t bad either; the only thing you’ll need really is to get used to wearing chapstick, as your lips will get dry, although to a much lesser extent if you do dosages of 20mg or 10 mg.

              If you're worried about accutane, try using vitamin A instead. Isotretinoin is simply a specific form of vitamin A after all, and while vitamin A itself may not be as effective gram for gram it'll still help. I do 50k iu a day, making sure to take in vitamin d and k as well. For me at least it seems to have done the trick.

                This is a solid post - I do have a question regarding back acne though. Since I started lifting regularly, cleared up my diet and started taking Zinc, D vitamin and magnesium, I started getting mild acne on my back. I think this is because of an increase in testosterone, but I am yet to do blood work. It’s not intense, it’s quite mild - looks like a deep red pimple and it doesn’t really stand out too much, however it still annoys me. I was wondering if you guys could recommend something for this?

                  You could try vitamin A. Works similar to accutane since they're related, but you don't have to worry about the expense since vitamins are cheap and no doctors visits, and you don't have to worry about sides since you won't be on the crazy high doses of a precription. I had roughly a 4 on the list above and taking 50k iu a day helped immensely. You probably wouldn't need to take as much. I also supplemented with vitamin d and vitamin k.

                  I had type 5, severe acne. I've checked the example photo and it was worst than on that photo. I was 15, shitty age to have problems like that... I've tried literally everything, besides all kinds of lotions, creams and tonics I've also been treated by electrolysis, lasers, pollen, mud, masks, hydrolysis and can't even remember what else. I was devastated and my parents spent shitloads of money to try to help me with my problem. Just by coincidence, a friend suggested I go see a doctor he knows, and she prescribed (ro)accutane!! Along with that I've used Benzac cream. I could almost see the changes every day, can't describe how good I've felt. Now when I see someone with the same issue I had I stop them to tell them what to take and what to look for online, even if they feel embarrassed sometimes they will gladly listen to what I say and feel thankful.                   I was at level 4 and had 2 cures of acutane done (which was exceptional as my dermatologist said that for 95% of the people, 1 cure is enough). I had pretty annoying effects: recurring eye infections, super dry skin and lips, bleeding noses. But in the end it cured 95% so I'm happy I did it. Can recommend it if all else fails.

                  Protip: In my experience, and what I've read online, body acne is the kind that is fixable with pyrithione zinc. One common product with that is head and shoulders shampoo.

                  I used to have hella chest acne, looked like shit, tried all the typical "acne treatment" stuff like clearasil, wouldn't work. Started rubbing on regular classic head and shoulders onto the area, and soon enough it was gone. You may even try once during the shower where you rinse it off, plus a bit at night where you rub it in and let it sit.

                  You will very likely see results within days tops, and maybe even cured after a week. I wouldn't keep putting it on forever after it's gone though, or else it might get resistant or something. They also sell special pyrithione zinc soap on amazon for tough cases, which has higher percentage (like 2%, compared to head and shoulders at 1%)

                  A few thoughts:

                  I started TRT and have experienced acne for this first time in a while. I was usually on pellets and my levels didn’t get as high. I moved to injections and now sit around 1100 levels.

                  My current SO couldn’t care less about my acne. Her words were “Do you not realize this is every woman’s dream. To pop your bumpies?” She takes care of it on my back and uses these creams and treatments. I asked her about my skin and she said “Well you’re a man, of course your skin isn’t so good.”

                  Has anyone ever met a woman that cares whether a mans skin was like a woman’s? Don’t get me wrong, the acne sucks and does affect my self esteem to a small extent. But really, I’ve never lose a date or a relationship because of it.

                  We should look st ourselves and determine if what we’re experiencing is women seeing the self esteem issues acne is causing and not the acne itself.

                  Dude having Acne since I was a teenager has been the biggest confidence killer in my life. Especially coming from a family of guys who never had any acne in their life constantly telling me to wash my damn face.

                  Anyhow the older I have gotten the less acne I have on my face which has been a godsend. I'd say my Acne is 1 and 2 which essentially means I can't get rid of it. Mine however is like 90% hormonal and as you mentioned that's the hardest one to get rid of.

                  I'm trying to do Nofap but when I get to day 3 or 4, my face transforms to a 3 or a 4 and this stays for the entire duration of however long I don't bust a nut. But as soon as I do bust a nut and release all the built up testosterone, within a day or two my face clears up quickl. Only time I have as close to a clear skin as I can ever get.

                  I eat right, I go to the gym, could work on managing my stress levels and I clean my sheets every week and have new pillows every 2-3 days. But I have no idea how to manage my hormones.

                  Edit: Also zero acne anywhere else in my body except face. I'd be happy with acne in my body but why the face I don't freaking understand

                  FYI: I went through 2 courses of Accutane and my acne still came back. Each course gave me 6 months to a year of (almost) perfectly clear skin though, so it wasn't a total loss. Obviously I'm a hard case when it come to acne, but people should be aware that it isn't a cure for everyone.

                  First course my doctor said it cures 90% of people. Second course he said would cure 90% of the people it didn't cure the first time. Fuck me. While having acne definitely bothers me (everyone would prefer perfect skin), I've pretty much learned to live with it. Besides, I've gotten plenty of pussy while having a face full of zits.

                  Accutane is a fake lab-made form of Vitamin A with the mentioned side-effects. Rather get real vitamin A from Beef/lamb liver. The dose you'd get from a few slices for dinner is more than the average accutane dose and unlike provitmin A or accutane you can't overdose. 'Vitamin A'/beta-carotene from fruits and vegetables is not bioavailable and must undergo an innefficient conversion process in the liver to be useful. So use animal-derived source i.e: beef liver. I noticed that pasta would give me horrible deep blotchy acne. Its a carb thing. Not just because of the insulin but because of gluten and bad bacteria growth in the gut. The carnivore guys here are on to something, just make sure its well-sourced meat not soy/corn fed.

But i pretty much stopped when I started using those beauty cream bars that dove make along with tons of water.                   You touched on this with the diet but if you have chronic digestive problems treat those first (ibs, colitis etc).

                  A common side effect of poor digestion is acne. My back and face immediately cleared up once I started properly treating my digestive issues.

                  I read somewhere acne was FAR less common in third world countries without the Western Diet. Now I'd be willing to bet that anyone who juices with spinach or kale (shitload of vitamin K) and some nuts, as well as getting their Omegas with chia seeds or something will NOT have acne. Natural diets just don't create acne. Your skin is your largest organ and reflects your health, and you are what you eat.                   I am not a nutritionist. (Although this sounds like and was originally meant as a disclaimer, I immediately realize that sadly, such a statement should not harm someone’s credibility these days.)

                  I am consuming dairy now more than I have ever done before, and I have been almost completely acne-free for the past year. However, I don’t consume milk: only lots and lots of cheese, butter and cream (I easily get over half of my calories from these). I have changed my diet quite radically for the better since my acne has disappeared: I consume very little sugar or carbs, and if so only via fruits. So I guess if dairy is related to acne, it is through the milk sugar, which is low in all dairy products except milk itself (because while you can jug down a litre of milk; if you do so with cream to get the same amount of sugar, you’ve eaten for that day).

                  Now the real disclaimers: this may also be related to my age. Who knows, maybe even to no-poo. I also abandoned cooking with vegetable fats. (reason: WILearned on youtube)

                  I had stage 2.5 acne about the ages 12-19, then it gradually decreased. Now (aged 23) I’m at stage 0 and some rare, unlucky weeks it may bounce to stage 1. With ups and downs, it has definitely decreased over the past 3 years. Now I have quite dry skin though (have to rub of the scales off my face each morning). Dandruff ever since age 12.

                  Wash your face with cold water whenever you use the bathroom.

                  When I was in high school, I tried everything to get rid of my acne. It was really bad. It wasn't until one summer I went swimming (I usually don't go swimming much) is when I realized my face settled down after my swim.

                  Ever since then I started washing my face with cold water and It has helped tremendously. However, this is not a quick fix. As the author said, fix your diet, your T level, and your lifestyle.

                  Awesome content and I'm sure this will help a bunch of people. I just want to toss my hat in the ring for a TLDR version & give a few simple tips that help me massively - wash face after riding motorcycle - dirt gets on skin. Anyway, here's what I do - it's short and simple, see if it helps anyone:

                  1) Take multivitamins, specifically E, zinc, fish oil 2) wash face only every other day 3) wash/use virgin coconut oil as moisturizer in morn & nite 4) dab lemon juice or white toothpaste on a pimple at onset 5) drink nothing but water & protein shakes

                  That's pretty much everything I do, and at most I get one pimple every few weeks. When my diet and vitamin and coconut game was shit, so was my skin. I DO NOT use any netrogena or brand name chemical washes, I found those dried me out like crazy and made things wayyyy worse. Cetaphil was alright when I was a teenager.

                  This is kinda bullshit guide btw. Acne or no acne is 99% genetics. Some people never get it regardless of what they eat and how they clean their face while others get it despite a clean and healthy lifestyle.

                  My acne was pretty severe nothing I did helped or it barely helped eventually I was described accutane and my face was clean within 2 months. (It’s a pretty heavy medicine wouldn’t recommend unless absolutely necessary)

                  I agree hormonal inbalance is one of the main things that gets you acne but the other is the size of the pores in which the pus is “stored”.

                  Your diet or how you clean you keep your face won’t affect the size of those pores so if those pores are large, everything you do will be pretty much futile as was what happened in my case.

                  I took that for years before doing accutane. It works pretty well but it’s still just a short term solution. You can use doxycycline as a patch until you grow out of acne and that works for some people. I was a junior in college and still struggled with bad acne so I decided to make the jump to accutane at that point.

                  Make sure you don’t take doxycycline on an empty stomach though because it can make you feel sick. I almost threw up a couple times because I skipped breakfast.
