I’m sitting outside a store waiting for my food and this dude comes up and is holding a knife in his hand and told me to give him my money. I’m much bigger than him but it was by his side. I told him I don’t have any. I was sitting down and this dude sneak attacked me like a fucking coward. I stood up and he was probly 5’5. Am I a pussy? What should I of done? Why did this dude pull a fucking knife on me? I can’t do anything against a fucking knife no matter how big I am. I know my words got me out of this situation but fuck I’m pissed.

[–]Kizzou136 points137 points  (14 children) | Copy Link

Bro he pulled a weapon on you. Dont let your pride and honor be your downfall. Your life is worth more than that. You did the right thing

A mexican taxi driver once told me what his mother told him; "there's plenty of graveyards filled with honorable men".

[–]Dboy223323 points24 points  (13 children) | Copy Link

I know he was ready to stab I could tell. My words worked

[–]Kizzou14 points15 points  (3 children) | Copy Link

Yep and it could have been worse. A friend I served with in the army was shot dead the other day by some coward in a parking lot.

The crime in the US is just a shit show in some areas.

[–]Dboy22331 point2 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

What did he get shot for?

[–]Kizzou14 points15 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

It just happened 2 days ago, so literally all I know is that he was shot in a parking lot. He wasn't the type of guy to be involved in shady stuff so its confusing that he was murdered like this.

The killer fled the scene.

[–]rprookie0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

Makes you wanna make to Canada or Alaska

[–]_Last_Man_Standing_9 points10 points  (7 children) | Copy Link

what exactly did you say?
just: "I've no money."

[–]Dboy223317 points18 points  (6 children) | Copy Link

I said “I don’t have any money man (had a debit card) but it wasn’t on me). I don’t want any problems”. He said “ bullshit empty your pockets” so I did which showed I didn’t have any and then he ran off

[–]JohnQData23 points24 points  (4 children) | Copy Link

In my country the guy would have stabbed you anyway.

[–]_the_shape_7 points8 points  (3 children) | Copy Link

Brazil?

[–]JohnQData5 points6 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Colombia

[–]ZeppKfw4 points5 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

Nah, OP isn't an off duty police officer.

[–]_Lucifer811_0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

Lol

[–]GlowInTheDarkDonkey9 points10 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Your words didn't work. Your compliance and your lack of money "worked". SMH.

[–]nixon9932 points3 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

What you said to him

[–]boy_named_su336 points337 points  (28 children) | Copy Link

Matt Damon did lots of knife training for the Bourne series. His coach said "so, what do you do if someone comes at you with a knife for real?". Damon says "well, I could do this technique or that technique". The coach interrupted, "no, you run the fuck away"

edit: here's the clip https://www.youtube.com./watch?v=fGO2rsMPNoI&feature=youtu.be&t=1332

I was high on shrooms when I saw it, so I paraphrased...

[–]i-am-the-prize159 points160 points  (10 children) | Copy Link

correct: a knife fight isn't about a clear winner, it's about who didn't bleed to death first.

[–]Pie_keeper72 points73 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Knife fight: Where the winner gets to die in a hospital

[–]Endorsed Contributorvandaalen39 points40 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

the loser of a knife fight dies in the streets. the winner in the hospital.

[–]EnemyAsmodeus32 points33 points  (7 children) | Copy Link

Right you can only pull a gun (with a round in the chamber) if they are attacking you with a knife from a distance. And mostly knifers don't attack from a distance, they sneak up on you.

If they're not at a significant distance, you might as well surrender.

The techniques you can do can absolutely fail... And if the attacker has knife training, even special forces struggle with not getting any stab wounds.

[–]TheH1dd3nFear12 points13 points  (4 children) | Copy Link

Or a bigger knife

[–][deleted] 21 points22 points  (2 children) | Copy Link

laughs in crocodile dundee

[–]_Last_Man_Standing_8 points9 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

it's my childhood dream to one day say: "That's not a knife... THIS is a knife..."

[–]Meterus0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

Then pull out a chainsaw.

[–]theoverlordactual4 points5 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Or a spoon if you're playing knifey spoony.

[–]i-am-the-prize1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

there is a reason some states have the 21' rule....

"... The approximate time to engage with a handgun
Tueller discovered that most police officers are able to get their pistol out of their holster and engage within 1.5 seconds.

The approximate distance of an imminent threat with an impact weapon
Tueller also drilled the distance at which a person can run from a standing start for 1.5 seconds to be about 21 feet.

21 feet became the ‘Tueller distance’ – the approximate maximum distance from a police officer that a person can use a knife (or other impact weapon) against that officer before the officer can shoot them..."

https://www.policeone.com/edged-weapons/articles/edged-weapon-defense-is-or-was-the-21-foot-rule-valid-part-1-72xXzcruzNfY45GU/

https://modernsurvivalblog.com/security/self-defense-threat-and-the-tueller-distance-21-foot-rule/

but it all starts with being situationally aware, agreed.

[–]toastismost0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

And most of them are deadly stab wounds

[–]sleep24x751 points52 points  (2 children) | Copy Link

Agreed.

“The loser of a knife fight dies at the scene, the winner dies in the ambulance.” A common adage that people stand by, and this assumes both parties are armed.

Fight only a last resort and always in self defense. Literally no positive outcome of being in a fight you could’ve avoided any way.

Feel like a pussy? Would you rather be dead, severely injured or facing charges and possible jail time (in case you fight back and happen to do severe damage)?

Avoidance is a bad idea only when you have something to gain, it’s a great idea when you have everything to lose.

[–]Shitcuckedredditsays12 points13 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

Facing jailtime for defending yourself after getting jumped is still such a cucked and nonsensical idea to me.

[–]∞ Mod | RP Vanguardbsutansalt11 points12 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Then get involved with the 2A community. They're the only ones really fighting this shit in the political arena, and frankly they've been losing for about 100 years as our right to defend ourselves has slowly been chipped away. The perfect system would be constitutional carry + stand your ground laws.

Suddenly people become much more polite to those around them when they know granny or the shop owner across the street can reach out from 30 yards away and end you in 2 seconds flat.

[–]aceofa16 points17 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

That’s pretty much the best advice. I was once attacked by random teenagers while walking with a friend around a city in the NE. We did fight them off, enough to runaway and get as far as we can. Luckily we were able to get cops on them.

Nothing to be ashamed about— a coward like him won’t have much to give in this life.

[–]tyrantgrey9 points10 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

I was 10 when i first had a knife pulled on me. And thats what i did. I ran the fuck out of there.

[–]boy_named_su2 points3 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

smart move

[–]PerryWinkleTheThird3 points4 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

That’s why you need cardio in your workout routine haha. If you can run a decent 5k time you can outrun any methhead that pulls some shit like this

[–]SalporinRP0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

seems like you've never heard of crackhead strength lol

[–]Droz_642 points3 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Knives are good as an "alpha strike" weapon. You want someone dead with a knife? Walk up behind them, and slit their throat. Any other time, a knife is a bad weapon to fight with. A knife fight is shitty for all involved. Loser dies in the street, winner in the ambulance.

[–]GiraffeOnWheels0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

Hell yeah. If you want to practice have a friend hold a marker. See how much color you get. I would normally say pull your gun, but less the than 15 feet a knife wins every time if you haven’t drawn.

[–]skyrunner2265 points66 points  (3 children) | Copy Link

He caught you slipping. Happens to the best of us. Doesnt matter how big or strong you are if the guy has a weapon. Main thing you can do is understand you have to be situational aware of your surroundings always. Have to always be on point, never know when someone is plotting

[–]i-am-the-prize27 points28 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

bingo. daydreaming and headphones are for indoors and in your haven, not in public in front of a business.

[–]sherlock9824 points25 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

I see you're a man of the road also

[–]bitesizechicken1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

This is why people on road are naturally TRP/alpha. You have to be constantly on top of everything and your surroundings. Any sign of hesitation or lack of confidence in the face of danger and it will be taken advantage of. You don’t even have to be that built really just on it. It might be a primitive way of thinking to most people but it’s where humans came from. Might not be good for mental health, quite the opposite but that’s another story

[–]IXseed164 points165 points  (40 children) | Copy Link

Bro it's a fucking knife lol. You're good. Listen, dudes pull blades out on people as a means to avoid having to fight you. He was after your green and was using that as intimidation.

If you're not hurt, you good.

[–]vicious_armbar29 points30 points  (2 children) | Copy Link

Listen, dudes pull blades out on people as a means to avoid having to fight you.

Exactly. If they pull a knife on you it means they don't think they could take you unarmed. They're basically admitting that they're scared of a fair fight with you.

[–]I_Dont_Type32 points33 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

Nah. These people are idiots and they want money. A knife is a good way of getting money from someone without the potential for a fight they might lose.

You think one of these guys is gonna threaten you for money without a weapon, even if he’s bigger?

[–]Dboy22336 points7 points  (36 children) | Copy Link

I know just kinda a shot to the ego when u get a weapon pulled on you. They must see me as weak

[–]IXseed62 points63 points  (11 children) | Copy Link

Why do you care what some dude that pulls knives out on people to rob them thinks of you?

[–]Dboy223310 points11 points  (10 children) | Copy Link

I don’t I just wanted to fuck him up. Still do

[–]IXseed33 points34 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Let it go. It's understandable that you do, but going to look for this guy to fight him while he could still be armed ain't the move.

[–]mams172431 points32 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Saving your fragile ego is not worth getting your life taken. The dude could have ended your life if you fought back.

[–]VigilantCMDR4 points5 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

i always recommend running

but i always have a blade on me. check crkt CEO for a cheap super small switchblade that you can easily conceal even in business uniform.

i personally have a big huntsman knife that i have a holster for in my hip for shit like this

I've only had to really 'pull' it twice. but its more for the confidence factor of

"okay, you are alone in this area with this other guy with a weapon you can at least fuck him up at bare minimum if he tries to hurt you"

always run no matter what, but if it comes down to a place you can't run most states have lax laws about carrying knives

[–]GiraffeOnWheels1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

I love my CRKT M-13. Index assist opening is great and it also has a window breaker and seatbelt cutter. I bought the “display” one so I think I got it for like $65, like 8 years ago. It’s bigger but I don’t see a point in concealing it, it’s mostly a tool for me. I use the clip to keep it on the top inside of my pocket

[–]LongLiveDetroit12 points13 points  (4 children) | Copy Link

lol bro go fuck his ass up, how dare he go pull a knife on you. He must of thought you were some chump, go beat him up and prove him wrong.

[–][deleted] 20 points21 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

This.

My friend got stabbed in the chest trying to stick up to a dude who turned out to have a knife. Could have bled out if friends hadn't been there to plug up the wound with their t-shirts- he also had a significant portion of his lung removed as well as his upper pectoral muscle because of this.

Don't risk it.

[–]rickmickman5 points6 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Voice of reason out this bitch 🤣

[–]UniversalFapture-2 points-1 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

Bad advice

[–]LongLiveDetroit9 points10 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

I was being sarcastic lmfao...

[–]GiraffeOnWheels0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

Revenge is a powerful human emotion. Focus it. Take some firearm courses or martial arts. Try not to get in that situation again.

[–]vicious_armbar10 points11 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

No, completely the opposite. If they pull a knife on you it means they don't think they could take you unarmed. They're basically admitting that they're scared of a fair fight with you.

The only time I got a knife pulled on me was when a fat old fuck was road raging at me. He break checked me; then when I passed him followed me around. I told him if he wanted to pull over and fight I'd be happy to. So he had to pull a knife.

I carry a knife in my console too and could have carved him up like a thanksgiving day Turkey. But getting into a pissing contest with an old man that has a fragile ego isn't worth murder charges. So I drove away.

[–]GiraffeOnWheels0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

Also cutting and killing people isn’t fun, healthy, or ethical. Retreat if you don’t have force, if you have force use it if it’s overwhelming (as intimidation). Don’t get into fair fights.

[–]umizumiz4 points5 points  (16 children) | Copy Link

You don't weapons on weak people, come on now.

[–]Dboy22335 points6 points  (14 children) | Copy Link

I know it was fucked up. Caught me by surprise. He seemed like he was ready to use it I simply told Him I don’t want problems and don’t have any to give him. It lasted probly 10 Seconds

[–]ogpine03257 points8 points  (5 children) | Copy Link

This is why you buy a gun. Not to use it in the manner that this guy used his knife, but to show them that you're not afraid of playing the game.

There is an inherent risk in everything, including waiting outside for your food. You found this out the hard way. You have to mitigate these risks to all possible extents.

[–]YoungWhiteAndEnglish1 point2 points  (4 children) | Copy Link

Would he of had grounds to shoot him ? How about shoot to kill ?

[–]ogpine03250 points1 point  (3 children) | Copy Link

He wouldn't have had to shoot him, just a flash of his strap would be enough in most scenarios. If the man with the knife continued to act aggressive and attempted to attack, then I'd say thats enough of a reason to use lethal force.

[–]GiraffeOnWheels1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Just for anyone reading this tragically misguided comment, knives win 9/10 times if you’re not drawn and within 15 feet. Also don’t be a fucking idiot and just “flash it”. Sounds like some Hollywood bullshit. Either draw it (because you’ve practiced your draw and have muscle memory with it and know exactly what the fuck you’re doing) or deescalate.

[–]YoungWhiteAndEnglish-2 points-1 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah I was just asking because I would love to buss some little thug in the head, but I guessed that wouldn’t be enough grounds to do that lol

[–]Shitcuckedredditsays-3 points-2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

And be trialed for murder?

[–]KnightBlue21 point2 points  (6 children) | Copy Link

That was really the only defense you could've given. If that didn't demotivate him then he was looking for a fight regardless and the money wasn't the prime motivation for the encounter. You did the right thing. I carry a knife when I'm in major cities as a way of dissuading the homeless/criminal population from fucking with me, I might recommend you do the same.

[–]YoungWhiteAndEnglish1 point2 points  (5 children) | Copy Link

Why? If you get pulled over by police then you will get nicked

[–]KnightBlue20 points1 point  (4 children) | Copy Link

? What do you mean? If I get pulled over by police it will most likely result in a ticket or a "slow down, have a nice day." You have the legal right to carry a knife in most states, as far as I'm aware.

[–]YoungWhiteAndEnglish3 points4 points  (3 children) | Copy Link

Really? I live in the UK so I just assumed it was the same everywhere else. You will definitely get arrested for carrying a knife in the Uk

[–]KnightBlue22 points3 points  (2 children) | Copy Link

Ah yes, in America you're allowed to defend yourself. YMMV depending on the country you live in.

EDIT: This raises the question, in the UK will a police officer require you to leave your car and/or search you for any reason?

[–]YoungWhiteAndEnglish1 point2 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

Yeah they do stop and search quite often in the UK. Especially in rougher areas and if they see a car full of young lads or the car looks suspicious. My dad done a jury service a few years ago and they had to decide wether to sentence a guy who was carrying one of those religious knifes in a box in his car, I think he was Sikh or some shit. If you look like a gang member, especially in London you will get stoped and searched pretty regularly

[–]johnxwalker-1 points0 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Well if you saw a opening, you could have sucker punched him into next week. If someone pulls a knive on me, you better use it.

[–]-TempestofChaos-0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

Fuck that. If they pull a weapon you. End them.

They are weak both physically and mentally

[–]rdotskip4 points5 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

No he sees you as strong. It’s the opposite, why would he need a weapon otherwise. Also your ego shouldn’t be affected, it’s a weapon. You didn’t lose a fist fight.

[–]Zoad222 points3 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

I think you're making this guy think you're weak in your own head. Maybe he thinks it's not a fight he can win without the knife? Change the way this guy is in your mind from an opportunistic fuck to who he really is: a coward.

[–]boy_named_su1 point2 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

if he saw you as weak, he'd try to fight you with his fists

he's the weak one, using a knife

[–]Dboy22331 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

True

[–]beginner_0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

They must see me as weak

In fact if it's a small dude probably exactly the opposite. He needs to constantly proof to himself how great and strong he is so the bigger the target the better.

[–]sherlock9826 points27 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Well, you're here typing this. You won

[–]valientote15 points16 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

Dude I had been in the same situation. Yeah it sucks but thats life you are not always going to be in a situation were you have the power and thats fine.

[–]Dboy22332 points3 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

I was in a vulnerable spot that’s why it went down. I was sitting on a bench with my back to him

[–]Solic8 points9 points  (3 children) | Copy Link

no matter how tough you wanna be if someone pulls a knife on you, You run or give whatever they demand. Pride over death? thats pure stupidity you did the right thing

[–]johnxwalker0 points1 point  (2 children) | Copy Link

Im not just giving my life up like that, I'm going down swinging.

[–]Skylights10004 points5 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

He’s not saying to just die..

Fighting is last resort

[–]johnxwalker1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Well i agree.

[–]mrpoopistan13 points14 points  (3 children) | Copy Link

As someone who has been in what I believe is a well-above-average number of confrontations with armed people, I'll tell you this:

Your best weapon is a calm demeanor.

Generally, people are put off by calmness in bad situations. It puts them on the back foot.

I'm reasonably confident in my ability to handle such a situation physically, but it's never Plan A nor should it be. Use your words and stay calm. If the person was committed to harming you, they'd have done it while they had the element of surprise.

The coolest thing I've ever said in my life was with a gun pointed at my head when I was 16. I knew the guy, and he apparently thought he was going to show me up for some offense. (I'm built like an NFL defensive end, for some context.) Eventually, I got bored with his shit and told him, "If you're not going to shoot me, I'm going home." And I walked away without looking back.

The only time I consider the possibility I'm going to be killed is if the other guy has numbers and his friends seem genuinely interested in a fight. That's rare. Most people don't have it in them.

In conclusion, based on my experience, ya did fine. Try not to ruminate too hard. Ideating about violent scenarios is a good way to end up on the wrong end of one.

[–]Dboy22332 points3 points  (2 children) | Copy Link

He seemed ready to kill he was shaking and shit

[–]mrpoopistan15 points16 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

That's not a killer.

Arguably, though, that's the person you're most worried about. He's unprepared to kill, and that means it'll be fucking ugly if he tries.

[–]GiraffeOnWheels0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

Probably tweaking

[–]HurricaneHugues5 points6 points  (9 children) | Copy Link

You did good though. You disarmed him with words.

[–]Dboy22333 points4 points  (8 children) | Copy Link

I feel like a pussy man fuck. I know I couldn’t do anything with a knife literally 6 inches from my body plus I was sitting down

[–]D_Marquis14 points15 points  (2 children) | Copy Link

Low status men fight. High status men have abundance, logic, problem solving and longterm thinking skills. Keep your cool, use your head.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

This is actually the answer. Everyone else missed the boat

[–]HurricaneHugues2 points3 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Your feelings are irrational. I'm telling you, from an outside perspective. You did good. The opposite of it wpuld be him gutting you with the knife and making a post about on a crime subreddit lol

[–]znikrep2 points3 points  (3 children) | Copy Link

If someone asked you "would you trade losing your wallet and a bit of pride for potentially years of legal issues", what would be your response? Remember that stabbing someone, even in self-defense, could bring a lot of unwanted consequences.

Think cool and depersonalise. Picture this story but happening to someone else:

" A guy is sitting at the store, some random sneaks up and pulls a knife, demanding cash. This guy says he has none and the would-be mugger leaves the scene"

Do you see broken egos? Lingering issues?

[–]Dboy22331 point2 points  (2 children) | Copy Link

Your right just wish I was strong enough to take him out

[–]_the_shape_2 points3 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

Serious question: have you ever seen footage of someone getting shanked to death? Do you realize how easy it is to die from a stab wound(s)? If you think you have the stomach for it, head over to liveleak or livegore, type in "stabbing" in the searchbar and school yourself. Almost always, in well under a minute, they begin to wobble, then dramatically hit the floor like a dropped sack of potatoes. It's not the sort of situation you want to F around with - ever.

I understand where you're coming from. I got jumped by two guys in the middle of Brooklyn's biggest park two years ago, and although I stood up for myself, I was lucky to have walked away from that with only a fractured clavicle.

Your emotions have the best of you at the moment. I completely understand - I too was boiling mad, and it took me months to completely flush the rage and resentment out of my system - but you walked away from that unscathed. This time next year, you'll probably need to be reminded that this even happened - that's how far removed it'll be from your conscious mind. If you're still dwelling on it though by 2021, I'd say you need to see a therapist, but for now, be wholeheartedly grateful that you're still on this Earth, above ground.

[–]Dboy22331 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Thanks man just mad I was in a vulnerable spot and he capitalized

[–][deleted] 24 points25 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Ideally should've stiсked the knife up his fucking arse. But realistically if you are alive and well, doesn't matter if a drug addict thinks you are pussy.

[–]Rolfenstien13 points14 points  (4 children) | Copy Link

I understand the frustration. We humans strive for control over our lives and when it’s suddenly taken away from us we feel like we’ve lost frame.

You reacted as any sane person would, if you had money you would’ve likely have it to him. Just because you’re huge and he’s 5’5 doesn’t make you knife proof and invincible. Honestly if you had tried to make a move you’d be an idiot. Who cares if youre even a “pussy” for not doing anything, you’re still alive.

Better to be a pussy than to be dead

[–]Dboy22330 points1 point  (3 children) | Copy Link

True

[–]znikrep1 point2 points  (2 children) | Copy Link

He's a guy risking his life and years of prison time for potentially 20 bucks. I honestly don't think he has anything on you.

[–]Dboy22330 points1 point  (1 child) | Copy Link

I want to call the cops on him

[–]_the_shape_0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

Have you seen him before? Was anything possibly caught on any surveillance camera?

You can file a report, but odds are it'll just boil down to the ol' :"ok, well, we'll call you and let you know if we find anything", never to hear from them again.

Not trying to discourage you, simply pointing out what's likely to take place, especially if you answer "no" to the Qs I wrote above.

[–]i-am-the-prize10 points11 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

Jeff Cooper's " Principles of Personal Defense " is more than just about firearms. You should have seen his body and the knife, ideally. If you're sitting in public, at a place of business where others can assume you have funds in a time when many are bitter, angry and withouth means (covid+Floyd), you MUST be on alert.

As for what to do,

1) you retreat, if possible.

2) you can try words, as you did, good that it worked.

3) if retreat is impractical (ie You have your kids in the store, you're gimpy) and your words fail, as your last resort: you fight back if your life is truly in danger. How? see Jeff's book.

[–]ipwnedx2 points3 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Honestly I’m not exp. enough to judge I’d chalk it up that It’s good the situation didn’t escalate. W

[–]Black JesusDerekMorganBAU4 points5 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]gvldenpharaoh3 points4 points  (3 children) | Copy Link

[–]FatGirlsInPartyHats4 points5 points  (2 children) | Copy Link

If talking your way out is not an option, this is what G. Gordon Liddy had to say on the subject:

First decide which arm you want to sacrifice. Then move towards the attacker. If you back away, he takes one swing after another.

If he gets you in the arm, he's done, now take the knife away and fuck him up.

Liddy was in the Army, FBI, and in the federal pen. Not the worst guy to speak to on matters of personal defense. Plus he's a total badass.

Well i have done krav maga and while i have trained an so many different knife scenarios- if you're in a relative safe country, just give them wtf they are asking for, it doesn't matter how tough you think you are, just do it, then run.

Never lean in/down towards the knife, and always keep your eyes on it, and run as soon as it is "safe" to do so.

If you are in a country that is not relatively safe, and homicide is something that happens often like in brazil etc., then read the situation, and if your gut is telling you something is wrong and this is about to turn real bad, well i would say do what is necessary but without training you're not gonna get far. Just never ever try to fucking grab hold of the knife, because you wont, your hand will slip and you will fucking die. Your best bet depending on the knife postion, is a swift and hard palm-punch to the knife away from you, with an instant follow up punch to the face, followed by a hard kick to the groin and fucking bolt out of there.

Check yourself for stabwounds asap after because there's a good chance you wont have noticed if you got one, mosy people who are stabbed think they just go punched because they dont feel it at first.

But really, train krav maga if it's just for the sake of everyday protection. It's developed for iranian military with a focus on the most effective way to eleminate a threat. No rules, no regard for the life of the enemy.

If you want to also compete, then i hear brazilian jiu jitzu should be pretty awesome too.

I'd say delusional, but pussy works too.

Not because of what you did, you did good, but because of how far up your own ass your head is.

Why do you have this idea in your head that you are so great that surely you should have beaten someone with a knife?

You need a reality check dude.

Bro, in a knife fight each part die, the first one dies in the scene, the other one die on the ambulance. Your life matter more than some cash, and be aware, in a combat, the one who get the first shot has the better hand, so, if you're surprised by a sneak attack, de-escalate the situation. Muscles cannot stop a knife, cannot stop a bullet, cannot stop a explosion. If you're met with a fight hand to hand situation, defend your integrity, if you're on a knife fight or on a gun fight, defend your integrity, but in this situation integrity means health and being able to get out alive, ready for the next day.

That’s what I’m saying man if he wanted to throw hands I would of been down but fuck I can’t do shit with a blade 4 inches from my throat

[–]intl_plyrs_clb1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

When I was ~16 I was in a phonebooth and pulled out my fancy new camera phone to look up a number since I had no calling credit on the phone.

Group of guys around my age surround the booth, start asking about the phone, asking to see it.

I realized I was in a bad situation, no way I'm fighting off 6 guys. I start trying to talk my way out of it.

One guy grabs the phone out of my hand and draws a knife then they all draw knives of all types: butterfly knives, butchers knives, steak knives, pocket knives, tactical knives, you name it , they had it. And I'm cornered in a phone booth.

They took off running and I chased them. Gotta get that phone back right? I'm not going to give up without a fight right?

They run into a project building and as I chase after them and turn the corner one guy swings a butchers knife onto my shoulder.

The blade just bounces off my shoulder, must have been dull or maybe it hit at an odd angle. Doesn't matter because right there and then I relized that the phone wasn't as important as my life and health.

Was my ego bruised? Yes. I had to meet up with my girlfriend at the time who was with her mom and sisters and they walked me to the police station to file a report. The next day my parents took me driving around the area so I could see if I spotted the guys to give help the police with a better description. All of this while I just felt like a shrivel of a man, but I was alive.

The feeling will pass.

Don't get into fights unless your life absolutely depends on it. You can make more money or buy a new phone, but not a life.

The prize for winning that fight would be "you get to walk away with the same number of holes you arrived with".

The prize for not having that fight was "you get to walk away with the same number of holes you arrived with".

Your goal, when faced with a force multiplier you don't have, is to survive. You survived. Good show. Best possible outcome.

What would I have done? I'd filled him full of 5.7mm or 9mm holes, depending on what I was carrying that day. I may have a couple of black belt ranks and a winning fight record, but the reason I win fights is that I don't voluntarily enter them without a tactical advantage.

You did only 2 things wrong:

  • Be out and about in public without a weapon on your person.
  • Be unaware enough to let him get close to you.

[–]W_O_M_B_A_T1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Why did this dude pull a fucking knife on me?

So, he was willing to go to jail for assault with a deadly weapon and armed robbery.... to earn pocket change? Willing to risk getting high velocity lead poisoning from someone with a concealed pistol?

The issue was the guy was a class A fucktard, and probably withdrawing from fentanyl or something.

Not a clinical retard, he was merely fucktarded. You can identify fucktards from the fact that they do buttersnap fucktard shit.

Wouldn't give him big odds of being sober.

I've heard that opiate withdrawal can be like getting a full body muscle cramp while rolling naked down a hill made of broken glass or IV needles.

I can’t do anything against a fucking knife no matter how big I am.

I mean, if he was a skinny short junkie chances are you might have gotten cut on your arm or stomach, before you curb stomped the guy. But is it worth risking getting a massive laceration to save a few bucks and prove some kind of point? Probably not. So you made the right call.

I know my words got me out of this situation.

Nicely done. You kept a cool head.

I think what you have is called having an ego. Your ego wants to paint you as being some a "pussy" because you decided talking it out was a better option than trying to repeat violent fantasies you'd seen in movies and TV.

The Ego sure loves it's fantasies and narratives.

If this was, say, a small mediaval town and chances are you knew someone who knew who guy was, I would definitely recommend getting together with your bros and hunting the bitch down, then breaking a couple of his fingers and teeth.

The problem is, people haven't quite forgotten the small town or tribal mentality even though most people live around fairly large cities with hundreds of thousands or millions of citizens.

Perhaps it's the closest thing you've had to a potentially violent encounter, and you shattered the tough guy self image created for yourself. All I know is that it's a very humbling experience when another has the option to take your life if he so willed it. The anger will go away soon, but make sure to never let your situational awareness be so shit again.

It's like driving and some idiot nearly wipes you out. Scary as fuck even though you responded correctly. If we were living in a war zone and dodging bullets just to go shopping, then we'd be more aware but less scared.

I did martial arts with various weapons for long. Short blades like knives are the most dangerous weapon in melee dude. This shit can fuck you up and end your life it’s not joke.

This isn’t a movie, if you have to run away or be a “coward” you are going to be a coward. I am sure if your daughter was there you would protect her, other than that there is no reason to act like Rambo, it’s a good opportunity in wasting your life

[–]Aymen_B-Rabbit0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

I had the same thing happen to me, except the man stole my phone out of my hand and pulled the knife and told me to let go or he'll hit me with it, I panicked and let go and than ran after him but it was too late, the shit was traumatic, my pride and my ego took a big fucking hit and it fucking killed me with overthinking alternative scenarios but there's nothing you can do, it'll take you days to recover, but I still think about it 1.5 years later

Sometime walking away from stupid fights is a best option. If you are good in martial art, mma or boxing then it would have been a different story. But as you don't have these skills then one stupid move could have got you injured and you would have ended up in hospital.

In a way I think it’s cooler that you stood your ground and didn’t run away... but cooler could also get you stabbed. If you ever find yourself in a similar situation you’re better off running away

[–]akihonj0 points1 point  (1 child) | Copy Link

Listen dude you talked your way out of it, with a knife, take this from somebody who studies martial arts, you did the best thing you could do.

You'll see on films that the hero takes on somebody with a knife and wins without a scratch, not real life, not in any way real life. If you get into a knife fight with somebody the best outcome is that you get to the hospital first and are still alive when you get there.

That you didn't have any money on you, I personally never carry cash for exactly that reason, took away his motivation to carry on with it, why rob somebody who isn't carrying anything worth robbing.

You did ok, put this to bed and move on.

[–]Dboy22330 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]jacknifejones0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

Hello. Martial arts instructor here.

As other posters have said, by the time you were aware if the knife being pressed at your side in a seated position, there was very little you could do. At this point the tactical options would have been very limited and only a few martial arts like krav maga actively prepare practitioners to deal with this specific situation. So even a boxer or Muay Thai practitioner's skillset, as awesome and useful as they are, would not give them awareness of what to do in that specific situation and chances are the knife would go in if a physical response was initiated.

So let's say you had drilled in krav maga for that specific scenario. Even so, initiating a physical response would be a dangerous proposition and the chances are high that you would get stabbed, slashed or cut in the process. This is because of several factors: 1. Action is faster than reaction. All the attacket needs to do is thrust he knife several inches forwards while you are trying to do a series of large co-ordinated movements to stop him before he can do that.

  1. Adrenaline dump is real. Even if a skill is trained in to the body, adrenaline and fear will quite frankly cause you to be shittier in application than you are in the gym or dojo. The only compensation for this is to have drilled the skill into your muscle memory through thousands and thousands of reps.

  2. Body positioning of the attacker relative to you and being seated in close proximity. A lesson in itself. Real fights started by criminals are never mano y mano. Why would a criminal want to engage in a man to man contest. They ain't trying out for ufc!

So what you are feeling is loss of ego and face for not standing up to the bully. Ignore that ciltural programming bullshit. Thinking in terms of pure tactical necessities, you made the correct choice.

[–]5t3fan00 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

deescalate is better than running which is 10000x better than fighting. the knife doesnt care if you're a 7ft or 5ft, it cuts arteries just the same.

you did good bro, shouldnt have done any different imo

[–][deleted]0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

If you’re in the United States look into getting a concealed carry permit would of fix this situation fast. Glad you’re alright.

[–]Crixusgannicus0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

1)Get some fucking situational AWARENESS! This dude sneaked up on you because you were sitting on your fucking ass with your head UP your fucking ass. Be aware of what the fuck is going on around you and WHO the fuck is around you AT ALL TIMES.

2)You ARE the walking dead. He had you. COLD. If he knew what the fuck he was doing and wanted you dead you would be dead right now. DEAD DEAD DEAD. Guaranteed.

Fuck, if he DIDN'T know what the the fuck he was doing he had an EXCELLENT chance of killing you or at least fucking you up SEVERELY.

Here is one way out of THOUSANDS to kill you FAST with a knife. GENTLY put your hands on the either side of your neck. Feel that movement? You have two carotid ARTERIES on either side of your neck. Slice one or two of those open and you WILL bleed out (DIE!) pretty damn quick.

3)Size? " I’m much bigger than him"? Don't mean SHIT! You think you could stop Bruce Lee from fucking you up? You actually think you could have stopped THAT guy from fucking you up when he had the advantage of surprise AND a weapon?

Back to number one. SITUATIONAL AWARENESS IS EVERYTHING.

4)"Having" a gun is no guarantee. USING a gun is no guarantee unless you know what the fuck you are doing and doing RIGHT and do it IN TIME. Don't take that the wrong way though. I'm not saying a gun or other weapon is useless, it's best to be ARMED, ideally legally, but depending on the circumstances, always remember, better tried by 12 than carried by 6.

A motivated knife attacker WITHIN 20 FEET (about 6 meters) even if you HAVE situational awareness can close the range and attack faster than MANY people can draw a concealed pistol.

Even if you draw and fire first, unless you get a CNS (central nervous system hit, spine or BRAIN), he can still keep coming. To do that you need SKILL and PRACTICE.

I could go on and on on the topic(s), but time for morning exercise.

Lessons

SITUATIONAL AWARENESS+SKILL+GEAR Give you a chance, but the greatest of this is

SITUATIONAL AWARENESS

[–]WRXLad5550 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

A knife fight is different. It's all about who bleeds to death first. Doesn't matter whether he is 5'5 or 6'4, he can still inflict damage with a knife and you can be lying down bleeding to death. Best off avoiding situations like this for your own good.

In this situation you’re obviously better off complying or just running away, but I gotta say, a lot of the time anyone who pulls a knife is a pussy. Sounds backwards but carrying a weapon just shows you’d be nothing without it. I know a guy who had a knife pulled on him and he responded very calmly like “okay, and what big man?” Or something along those lines. Won’t always work but the guy with the knife on my mate backed off with no hesitation.

It was 3 AM and nobody was around. Ran for my life and made it out. For a long time it made me feel angry and I had thoughts about finding them and killing them for doing this to me.

Most experts agree the best thing to do in knife fight is avoid if not run. They almost never end well. Yeah you're bigger and prob could of overwhelmed him and maybe could of even avoided his knife but the potential for serious damage to your body is too great. Lets say even if it's a 25% chance he stabs you before you immobilize him, that 25% could be life threatening.
