Texas A&M or UT Dallas? Serious dilemma

Take the money and stay in Dallas. At least after you graduate with a degree in computer science, you won't begin your new career as a Starbucks barista $100,000 in student debt due to all the H1B's from India and China crowding you out of the tech jobs market.

Don't go to college to party. Go to college to get a degree. Dallas is a big city with more things to do and more opportunities to party than College Station anyway. Work. Save your money. Move out.

You pretty much sum it up. A&M is a party school. UTD is a serious school. UTD has some nightlife, sounds like you are in area so you know what it is like. A&M is its own planet.

In addition to UTD dorks vs A&M parties, UTD is also very much an immigrant school, with a lot of attention to graduate degrees. And, A&M is rural where UTD is more cosmopilitan.

So, which would you fit in better at? The cosmopolitan, international, urban, graduate, dork school, near family, with a great chess team? Or, the country, wonder bread, rural, undergrad, party school, away from family, with an OK football team? Both are good engineering schools.

You might personally be more likely to pull at UTD, if you are the bookish type. You might find a brotherhood at A&M. You might melt down and fail from isolation at A&M. You might over rely on family at UTD and fail at school.

Another thing to consider, I think internships are more important than the degree. You might do better finding internships in DFW, not only because it's a tech city, but also you have family and friend connections.

A&M is something that can stay with you your whole life if you choose to. A&M is the only school where I see college graduates wear their rings their whole lives, other than west point. UTD will not give you many fond memories, likely you would graduate with a hatred for the school, they play weird games with credits, professors are likely to barely speak English, you will be fighting against rampant cheating; but you will be very employable; Those professors that barely speak English are typically very good at their subjects.

Not sure where you got the idea that UTD is academically superior... to give you some context A&M is ranked as the #11 engineering school in the country and UT Austin at #9... UTD by comparison is #80.

That being said, go to UT Dallas for two years, take advantage of your scholarship. Then apply to transfer to Texas A&M or UT Austin to finish your degree (both of which are far superior to UTD academically).

You won’t have nearly as much debt, and employers will for all intensive purposes regard you as an A&M or UT grad. I can guarantee you this will open up a lot more doors than graduation from UTD.

I go to UT Austin. I can assure you that tamu has a shitty party scene. If you wanna party, come to Austin. Otherwise stay in Dallas.
