I think it's off base. I don't think it's the lack of masculinity. It's close. In my mind is a very diverse issue, one of the factors being that if a white man or young man asks for help he is turned away, laughed at, and told good life is awesome.

And for all those that demonize this idea, just think of the retort you're coming up with. To mock white men, to say their life is perfect. To say no way you could need help.

I'd say it's more due to the end of parens patriae civil confinement of the mentally ill. Until the 60's-70's, you could put the likely school shooters in an insane asylum before anything went wrong. Now, you have what are essentially criminal due process requirements, so you have to wait for them to do something or at least make an attempt before they can be put away.

Access to guns has not changed, overall crime has actually gone down, the only things that have changed aside from this legal doctrine are fatherlessness and social isolation, which are also mental health related.
