The Disappointment of Improvement

Absolutely. There are plenty of people I was once close with that I've made the decision to move on from. It's often not even a conscious decision, but sometimes it is. A few reasons:

1. Ongoing drug use out of youth and well into adulthood.
2. Refusal to gain employment/manage finances - these issues often directly affected me, particularly in the case of room mates.
3. Failure to have a spine. If I can't rely on people to have my back, it gets a little much when I'm expected to have theirs.
4. No effort to improve physically.
5. A lack of passion and goals, wasting time, happy to simply coast along.

A lot of these just come down to personal responsibility. I don't place much weight in the epithets of others, preferring to live my own life and find my own truth - but there is some value in the saying "you are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with". Without being arrogant, when it becomes clear that i'm the only one raising the average, I move on.

Now I understand that everyone takes life at their own pace, and I'm not judging these people. I'm not perfect. I've made my own mistakes and regularly failed to live up to my own potential or push my own boundaries. But sometimes it becomes clear that someone has chosen a certain path in life that doesn't correlate with my own, or I'm pushing out and doing new things and there's simply no room on the journey for dead weight.
