No. It's just a way for guys with low self-esteem to justify being a jerk and to try to make other guys feel inferior. There's also no such thing as the friendzone, either. It seems like this guy wanted you to convince him and just didn't want to say it.

In the wild there are alphas and betas within animal groups, but human societies don't (and shouldn't) work in exactly the same way. Men's rights groups and other slimy guys will use this sort of terminology in order to "elevate" themselves above women and other men, but it's really just a front for acting douchey and "getting back" at all those "evil feminists" and the "betas" that get the girls the "alphas" want.

Personally, any guy who uses terms like that immediately gets put onto the "never gonna have a chance" list. Most of these guys are misogynistic, rude, and controlling. Not really what most women are looking for.

I married a man who could be seen as "beta." He's nerdy, likes to cook, does housework, sees women as equals, and doesn't act like he's some frat boy he-man. He's everything that an "alpha" hates and he's sexy, intelligent, and has a wonderful girlfriend in addition to me, his wife (we're poly). Nice guys finish first, believe me**.

I wonder how much sex the "husband" is getting? I'm sure after all that cooking, cleaning and feminist studies research he should be getting all the V he desires :)
