Women who have changed their fashion choices/style of dress to become more conservative, did people treat you any differently? If so, how?

I switched to dressing more conservatively/formally when I began teaching children. I did this to achieve a few things: I wanted parents to take me seriously, I have some very young students and wanted it to be impossible for me to have a wardrobe malfunction in class, I was having problems before with guys following me/train groping (yes, this is in Japan).

Dressing more modestly has had all of the effects I had hoped for (I get more respect, less problems from strangers on the train), plus (usually) female students also make positive comments about my outfits/accessories, look at my nails, ask me to help them fix their hair, etc. Kids really do pay attention to that kind of stuff.

Started wearing dresses and natural makeup more frequently. Jeans sometimes too, but often with a cute top that fits. I go for cotton A-Line dresses—especially florals—which you can find on Amazon for decent prices. Used to walk around in T-shirts and leggings or shorts this time of year.

I’m a grad student in Computer Science, and I’ve noticed that I get a lot more male attention doing this. No one has ever been disrespectful, though. These male PhD students just hang around trying to talk to me. I’ve even noticed that a few of the professors I know (nobody I work with however) are sweeter and more gentlemanly to me, or will chat me up for a few minutes for no reason.

I’ve also found that I feel more compelled to be nice and friendly and feminine to people for no reason because I feel good walking around, dressed like this. So I guess that comes through too; I feel like people are nicer to me, but it’s probably also that I have more aplomb and confidence about me when I know I look good.

I started wearing dresses (reasonably modest, often A-line), on the regular, years ago. People commented then, just as much as they do now.

"I don't think I've ever seen you in pants."

"Do you always wear a dress?"

Overall, I got a lot more attention from men, especially once I started growing my hair out, and I still notice they'll make eyes at me. I attribute this to my style, because I wouldn't call myself gorgeous or anything, but I am usually dressed very nicely. My husband has actually mentioned that it was one of the things he found most attractive about me, when we first met. So many women go everywhere in sweats with words on the butt, that it was refreshing to him to see someone put in a little effort.

Ironically, one of the reasons I like them so much, is how little effort they require. I choose a dress, shoes, maybe a cardigan, and I'm good to go. I really don't mind the comments and would rather be over dressed than under dressed. I'm not one to claim jealousy, but when my frumpy cousin makes a snarky remark about my dresses, I kind of feel like she's just embarrassed that she doesn't try harder.

I'd say the biggest problem dressing up poses is "sexy librarian" comments from customers, but this is generally evened out by the increase in respect I get from customers and coworkers/management alike. It's easier to request help/insight from someone, when they're dressed like a grownup.

This story isn't really pertinent to anyone other than me personally, but let me just bore you with it anyway. I work in High Court in a country that was a former colony of England and still uses a UK court system. Lawyers and judges in crisp white shirts, black blazers and pants/skirts, white wigs. Everyone. I'm the stenographer and am not really required to wear anything special so would just generally look "nice." The higher-ups in the courtroom hardly ever even give me a "good morning" let alone know my name. Recently I started dressing to the 9s in some lovely Brooks Brothers suits I splurged on PURELY for the reason of being able to skip the public security line and go in with the lawyers and (I'm a lying liar who lies, but forgive me, when I'm just trying to get to damn work in the morning it's incredibly annoying to be behind 100 locals showing up for jury duty lol) and LO AND BEHOLD I swear I've been treated like one of the team since I started dressing this way, people obviously thinking I too am a lawyer. It's really interesting. Plus I look fly AF so it's a look I'm keeping :-P

I've begun dressing feminine in only the past semester. As a contrast: last semester, I wore exclusively denim shorts with flannel shirts and sneakers with no makeup, hair pulled under a baseball cap. This semester it's skirts and sweaters, usually with a strong 30-40s vintage vibe. I sometimes curl my hair, usually wear at least lipstick, and go for Oxfords or boots.

Holy crap is the treatment different.

First off, I get at least one compliment a day. I don't think I'll ever get tired of that--it's so nice to be seen! And people seem to trust me more, which I didn't expect. Librarians used to stare at me like I was going to commit arson, which saddened my book-adoring heart. Now people tend to just like me on sight. I think there was a confidence boost too. I don't skulk anymore, and I work on my posture and speaking clearly. I really can't tell how much of the new reactions are because of my clothes or because of my deportment.

On the flip side, people are quicker to assume I'm dumb. Which can be true--I'm really smart in some ways (analyzation, intuition, book-smart) but not in others (I have zero navigational skills, the amount of factoids in my head is scant from a wildly varied education (I took a 200 level Revolutionary history course at a fairly prestigious college and didn't know who Rochambeau or what the Battle of Saratoga was. Good thing I pick it up quickly!)) so it they catch me in an off moment I really can look like a ditz.

My favorite compliment isn't one everyone would like: you look like a history professor. But it's exactly what I'm going for, so it meant the world to me to have it affirmed by two total strangers.

As an ex muslim who used to and still wear long sleeves and wide clothes +hijab, I can tell u that ppl r too toxic when it comes to women choices, I mean there r always that dude who will tell u that u look like a whore so show the world ur middle finger and dress up like u want

It really depends on the subgroup. I get treated best when I dress as one of them, whoever them is. Hippies are nicer if you're barefeet, muslims if you cover everything, young people if you're fashionable, rich people if you dress preppy, etc.

I usually dress pretty conservatively and very feminine (lots of dresses and pretty blouses), and have for many years after growing out of my teenage emo phase.

One day last year I was walking through my old hometown with my younger sister, and couldn't quite believe how differently people treated me compared to her. I got lots of smiles, people letting me past, opening doors, conversation in shops etc. By contrast, people weren't as warm (and even quite rude) to my tomboy sister. She noticed it too.

On the other hand, I have struggled to make mum friends at the local parent and child groups. Most of the other mums wear leggings, sweatshirts, no makeup etc, and have seemed a little reluctant to speak to me. I don't know if my clothing and style is the reason, but have wondered, as although I'm a little shy I always try to be friendly (and don't really care what anyone else wears).

my style became more conservative in high school long before i even got into politics, just because i thought it looked pretty. i get comments on how different i look but they're all very positive.

I switched from dressing modesty but regularly (pants, no cleavage shirts) to dressing modestly and feminine. The reactions are really good. I also got compliments for wearing regular but modest clothes too, from both genders. The compliments were on the modesty and not wearing "basic" clothes like short jean shorts and low crop tops. I've noticed people always admire modesty and that makes me happy that they do.
