To the guys saying you should appease him by "playing" beta because it's stupid to risk your life or potential injury, where do you draw the line? Do you also let someone have your wallet without offering resistance if he's threatening you? Do you let a burglar steal your belongings and rape your girlfriend? Whatever floats your boat, I guess, but I would rather be 6 feet under than go through life like a coward with no self-respect.

Personally I think the OP handled it very well. There's no reason to escalate in a situation like this, and he was able to come out of it with his dignity intact.

I’ve seen D1 football guys workout at the athlete gym. They usually finish weights when as my team comes in. Outside the quarterbacks and kickers, those guys have some serious strength and muscle. Also those guys minus the QBs and kickers seem to all have a few loose screws. I wouldn’t mess with them.

Use the Grey Rock Technique with hotheads. Use one word answers. Don't ever respond directly to their trolling. Change the subject. Talk about the most boring shit in the universe. Talk about how good your drink is. "Hey, I really like the smoky flavors in this tequila. You want one? let me order you a drink, my man, you seem tired."

Don't ever attempt to argue, explain, justify, or defend your actions to them, under any circumstances. Remember this is someone with a 12 year old mentality and adults don't waste their time trying to explain themselves to kids who barely made it to puberty.

It’s not always about being brave. If he’s much larger than you, stupid, and threatening you

in a bar you could end up losing an ear or going blind in one eye.

Just play beta and be like “Sorry bro I’ll walk away”. That guy will get what’s coming to him one day regardless of his size/job trust me. As for the girl she’ll probably think he’s an aggressive insecure douche you could always approach her another time.
