Upset about the world and people since my last travel

I was a bit traumatized since travelling in Colombia. Everybody seemed to be a predator, trying to take advantage of the other people.

  • My best friend got raped at 14, children at 15, her ex-boyfriends were drug-addicts that would beat her. Her 4 brothers have all been assassinated.
  • My second best friend had a brother working for Pablo Escobar, another brother was successfully legally but assassinated by his wife and her sister took financial advantage of her ex-husband, who paid 2 yearly salaries of plastic surgery on her and she dumped him for a better man.
  • My third best friend was raped at 8 by her stepfather, she lived on the street at 12 and had to become a prostitute for a few years quite young.
  • I was robbed in Colombia and uncomfortably got scammed out of $7 2 times.
  • I have another 100+ stories about the time in Colombia. It was pretty insane.

I've been also in Vietnam, Cambodia, Colombia and spoke to a lot of Venezuelans, but you can't even trust the police offers and the government there. These people claim that they are moral and working to improve the lives of other people, meanwhile they are just lead by resentment, hate, jealousy and selfishness.

I do enjoy travelling and socializing with other people, but the more I see, the more I start to live in my mind and ruminating about people and the world. People seem far more evil than they realize they are and even unconscious of most of their behavior.

How can I get peace with this? I try to live in the moment, but I feel too attached to the idea that the people I meet daily, are probably not that great.

People also seem to behave worse when I expect worse of them. People were quite nice to me, when I was living in the moment and expecting the best. I'd like to get to more mental peace and have a life with sincerity, honesty, authenticity, integrity and less judgement and bitterness.

You've visited countries notorious for corruption at high levels. What did you expect to see.

These problems are too big for you and I to try and solve.

Are u gonna waste your life trying to save broken souls or will you focus on bettering your own life and maybe helping those you love to find success too.

I was born and raised in Brazil so I am allowed to say that. In Latrine America and generally in the Turd World everybody is trying to take advantage of everybody thinking they are so smart and then wonder why they are not First World. There is a reason why First World Countries are at that level. Because people have a high enough IQ, check world IQ map, and culture of honesty to understand that screwing over everybody will lead to everybody getting screwed, except for a handful of people. Compare the behavior of the population in Haiti and Japan after the respective earthquakes and so will see the same again. Unpleasant truths..

Yes I agree and then people wonder why investors don't want to put their millions there...I wouldn't either..

[–]lastdumra1 point2 points  (1 child) | Copy

Short term gains vs long term gains.

Being able to delay gratification is one of the main signs of intelligence.

Stupid people will try to maximize short term gains not thinking or even disregarding future consequences. Intelligent people will plan for the future more and are able to pass short term gains in exchange for future benefits.

The guy stealing the $10 USD from his best friends does not understand the amount of doors that he closed himself in the future by damaging his reputation like that. So he is happy from his short-term gains, but then does not understand why other people seem to do better long term. He attributes it to luck or to privilege or things like that.

This is so fucking true. I live in a post-communist eastern-european country and the corruption at all levels is so ridiculous. We blame our politicians for being corrupt when in reality, the whole country is the same. We all step on each other's heads by not caring about the state, we look at tye state as if it was our enemy and yet we are the state. 10 out of 10 people in this country would not give anything they don't have to, to the state. They would lie and cheat so they could have more for themselves. In politics, every one of our people would steal. No wonder we're fucked.

Great comment. I lived back home in Pakistan for a year and it temporarily fucked with my world view, seeing a lot of bullshit injustices and general shittiness in life quality, until I got over it and just held on to the gratefulness of living in America where, as much as we hate it, the fuckin system keeps a certain balance. It's either using your advantages or staying a victim

That is the world, you are disappointed because you grew up in a system or place that told you that the world is a nice place but its the same as dating girls.

Movies sold you the idea of true love. Girls don't care that you are this good person they only want high SMV.
Same thing with the world, its not a nice place even in many western countries you just have to go to a neighbourhood thats a big rough to realise that. I think Colombia is a bit of an outlier for violence but yes the world is not nice. Unlike those people you have a choice, avoid it like most people do or face reality and deal with it.

Most people take the blue pill in this case because for them there is nothing to be gained from helping people.

Grew up in a ghetto where if you walked into the wrong place, you'd be beaten up or robbed. I'd hear gun shots on a weekly basis. I was in a school shooting and twice had swat teams point a gun at me...

.. And I still didn't get the assassination part. Also women lie, my ex said I beat her to try to get custody. When I pick up single moms, they always tell me about the shitty husbands they had. Be very skeptical. Don't get me wrong but things usually don't just happen.

Try not eating for a full 24 hours. Throw in dirty drinking water that at best causes diarrhea. If you're in a warm place, go outside, and pretend you don't have a place to live. You can't trust your friends because they're trying to stay alive too.

Imagine you have nothing. You don't even have hope.

Poverty makes people desperate. Desperate people do desperate shit. It brings out the darkest human qualities.

If I was spondering the state of the world on a daily basis, I would drown in nihilism.

However, I am in Vietnam right now, meeting the my finances grandparents, and overall, people seem okay.

Sure, prices rise by 200 percent when I enter a store and vietnamese people can get jakc shit done without yapping about it to everyone involved...

But the way I see it, people's behavior is in homeostasis with everything in and around them. It is the membrane between their inner and outer world.

So, whatever ridiculous behaviour they may seem to exhibit... It's probably pretty well adjusted to the life they live.

And as long as those people do not realize their conditioning, and maybe even break their chains, they will remain in that state.

It's not ideal, but it is the best they can be with their limited power.

I am not American so I don't know about that. But I am in the communist north with my father in laws family atm and people seem very friendly and hospitable. I don't mind people trying to get money out of me, they gotta make a living somehow and people are poor as fuck here. (I still try to get good prices though, it's business. :D)

Their behaviour is simply how they adapt to their surroundings. I just do my best to be friendly and compessionate, smile often and say thank you {on vietnamese) a lot. That seems to help and make people happy.

What is so fadzinating however is the collectivist mindset. Instead of making things more nice, it somehow turns every interaction, especially in the family, into some kind of power talk and political game. Everyone is always trying to gain position or social standing or at least safe face.

It's great to learn about people and I think it makes me More compassionate and relaxed when dealing with people in general.

[–]furcryingoutloud4 points5 points  (0 children) | Copy

Seems to me like you're putting a lot of effort into trying to find reasons to feel bad about the world.

My second best friend had a brother working for Pablo Escobar

Dude, Escobar died 35 years ago. You think maybe we can let him die? Regardless, he is no longer a part of any problem whatsoever. And sure, you know people who have had bad things happen to them. But again, you are going to be whatever you concentrate on.

Now, do the same thing you did with this post, but backwards. Write the things you know to be really cool, or really good in your life. Then compare notes, there's good and bad in the world, live on the side that makes you feel good.

And no, being scammed out of $7 two times doesn't make the world a bad place.

[–]dominicthetiger3 points4 points  (0 children) | Copy

I would say visit different lands, try to detach from these situations and do whats best for you, otherwise you'll keep going back to that same shithole.

Also work on yourself mentally, I can't help but notice you're tryin to be the hero here. Don't. Work on yourself and be the best you can be, most of your issues will be solved in the process.

Ultimately, unless you have a really strong sense of mission and an even stronger frame (which you don't), you will inevitably be dragged down by those people, so do yourself a favor and get tf out.

Get some.

What cities did you visit? This country is shit hole, albeit a beautiful one, government is corrupt, too much poverty, minimum wage is too low, there's a lot of gang and narcos, also a lot of people love to scam gringos like you, just because you are gullible idiots that don't understand spanish that well among other things.

Bogotá is one of the biggest shit holes this country offers, it's shit show after shitshow. There's good people, but you have to find them.

[–]c4ge1nvisibl30 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

What did you expect of the cities? This is a developping country and a pretty lacking one, the government is too corrupt, they steal too much. Well, paisas have their fame as golddiggers man and you're an foreigner, who probably holds a lot of money.

Bogotá is one of the worst cities to live, it can be big a have lot to offer, but transport and people make it shithole, too many homeless people that like to steal, people are totally unfriedly, among other things.

In general, colombian girls like for the man to pay for things, but there's a lot that are in it just for the treat, they like to take advantage of men for free meals, we even got memes of that, I think is the same anywhere else in the world.

The thing is, man, that if you aren't that good at spanish a lot of merchants are going to steal from you, specially in Cartagena or Santa Marta, whatever you payed there was an even more bloated price than the normal scam even locals have to suffer.

The country has beautiful places and a lot beauties but, is a total shitshow some times. Why do you think is called "the country of magic realism"?

This is EXACTLY why I roll my eyes at people who visit some country for a week, put it on a list of "countries visited" and love to brag about it.They:

-Do not understand the culture

-Do not understand the language

-Are unable to figure anything out without paying someone or following a tourguide

-End up visiting hostels/hotels, tourist trap restaurants

-Have superficial broken conversations that would be the worst type of awkward elevator convos

-Get begged/scammed out of money

-Take a bunch of instagram photos on a mountain or some shit raising their hands doing the peace sign.

They then go home and proceed to talk about how worldly they are.

Understand your role as a tourist. You are a person who should only travel if you have the wealth to hire locals to help you. You are not their friend. You are not a local. You are a dude/dudette with cash to burn on a flight that is more than 3x years of their salary. Thus, they will target you for money. Their shtick can change based on who they are. They can serve you, they can trick you, they can beg you, they can pretend to serve you then when you're at a distance from your stuff they can steal it. Etc etc etc. Your role to them is a bag of money. Get over it.

Go somewhere warm, try an all-inclusive resort. Less hastle and you pay upfront. Use the lockbox for your valuables. You'll get the same treatment minus the risk of being shanked.

[–]Zanford1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy

If you grew up in a high standard of living country with an English common law legal tradition (or other low corruption countries like post-WWII Japan), you grew up in a bubble.

What you experienced is the natural state of the world and always has been and probably will be in the future (possibly coming to your hometown too). Places like the US in Canada are a glaring exception to the norm. If you try to make those places more like the rest of the world (whether by changing their policies or importing enough people with the culture and genes of other places), then you are highly likely to get more Columbias, rather than getting "a version of Canada where people look a bit more tan and like spicier food but things are basically otherwise the same". Canada, Switzerland, and Japan don't have magical dirt that make anyone who walks on it act like a polite Canadian or Japanese citizen.

P.S. Your friends were probably drug dealers or other gangsters. 4 brothers getting assassinated? Yeah, homey, they were running a drug operation and they got cleaned out by rivals.

Now… I been sayin’ that shit for years. And if you ever heard it, that meant your ass. You’d be dead right now. I never gave much thought to what it meant. I just thought it was a cold-blooded thing to say to a motherfucker before I popped a cap in his ass. But I saw some shit this mornin’ made me think twice. See, now I’m thinking: maybe it means you’re the evil man. And I’m the righteous man. And Mr. 9mm here… he’s the shepherd protecting my righteous ass in the valley of darkness. Or it could mean you’re the righteous man and I’m the shepherd and it’s the world that’s evil and selfish. And I’d like that. But that shit ain’t the truth. The truth is you’re the weak. And I’m the tyranny of evil men. But I’m tryin’, Ringo. I’m tryin’ real hard to be the shepherd.

There are probably a lot of reasons for this, but it's way too complex for anyone to try and explain to another person in a forum.

Just be thankful that your not in that situation or at least smart enough to not be like that. Although sometimes, you may have any choice.

You need to stick to travelling Wisconsin. Those countries are not for the faint of heart. What did you honestly expect? A massive party in your honor. We went to some pretty rough parts of Sao Paulo and nothing happened although I had to let cooler heads prevail a couple of times. The rest of the time my wife and I were with friends who are locals. I've spoken with other motorcyclist who have traveled through Columbia and the general consensus was to stick to the interstate and be friendly to the military at the checkpoints.

[–]dtyler860 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

Pardon if I did not see you answer somewhere else in the comments, Jesus dude, what Stratus in which cities did you go to? I’m a white American and I just visited Cali in September. I had the opposite experience. I found the family institution is very strong in Columbia, people were well dressed, everybody seem very happy, everyone seemed to be looking forward instead of backward on their darker past despite the obvious history of drug wars, I found the mountain towns to be very much like Europe. Everything was way more civilized than I could have ever imagined.

It sounds like what you and your friends have experienced firsthand is absolutely terrible and I don’t mean to discredit that, I’m just wondering if you were in a bad part of a bad city or what. I went to one of the most notoriously dangerous cities, drove through an even worse city called Armenia, and while I saw what looked like sketchy areas, I not one time experienced a single person that looked like they were there to take advantage of, or worse, kill anyone. Obviously it happens every day and there’s a lot of very very dangerous places, but I did is I was told as an American, which was not go to this certain areas and not do anything stupid

I can’t speak to the level of evil or just overall bad people in those places. Though growing up mainly sheltered in american suburbs, visiting the city and just during the times of my life I got myself involved with drugs, I discovered that anyone, including family can be two faced and hateful. Best thing you can try to do, is live your life for the positive. And the more you do to better yourself, the more you can help others and project your happiness. Obviously keep your eyes open and wits about you, as to not be taken advantage of. But in the same respect, don’t assume things or project onto others, they may just surprise you. No one truly desires to be in despair, and so presented with humor or a smile most will respond in kind. Karma will sort out the rest, the world is far to big to change on your own, so just do the little things that you can to help others and be happy!

This post is actually a wake up for its readers in the west to prepare for the decline. Those that haven’t scene what society’s can become need to be aware and appreciate what we have.

[–]_Ulan_0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

Similarly when I did a trip to US I was surprised by the large amount of shitty couple stories people had to tell. One was raped by his wife, the other one was offered to an identity fraud group by his sister. A guy had to hitchhike from California to Montana to retrieve his Car that an ex had stolen, the last guy had spent over 100k in a lawsuit where his ex-wife accused hi of all wrongs. Plenty of female friends and girlfriends admitted being raped in their life, way over half the women I got to know.

It doesn't compare to South America of course, but it's a very different narrative from the average 8'o'clock news or Hollywood movies.

[–]1DubbleFUPAwitCheez0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

Don't be dense. I'll be as vague as I can without hitting on the real issue, since this is still reddit, while still being helpful.

Basically you're getting glimpses of true reality. First world society is like a dream compared to the rules of nature and there are still parts that cannot be circumvented. We cite briffault's law all the time around here for example. When you decide to forget that we are in fact predatory animals and that death is as much of a part of life as life itself, then this will "traumatize" you.

This savagery is not something to ignore about humanity but that doesn't mean you don't strive to rise above it. I personally aspire to simply be an example for others of what they could be. I don't try to inhibit them but I don't see any use in "helping" them either. They have to get there on their own.

[–]PinacoladaSauce0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

Why are you posting this in this subreddit? This just seems ridiculous to me

First, I’ve been to Vietnam Cambodia and Colombia with literally no issue. A couple people tried to scam me in Colombia and Vietnam, but key word, TRIED to. When I started calling them out or just ignoring them they left me well enough alone. If you’re getting scammed it’s partially your fault. Asides from those minor incidents, I felt safer than even in Baltimore, where I grew up

Second, these aren’t even that bad my guy. You’ve never been to Africa and watched a rhino that had maybe 50 other members of its species left get poached. You’ve never been to the jungles of the Amazon and watched a baby who you know had asthma struggling to breath, knowing it wouldn’t make it past age 7, but there was nothing you could do. You haven’t been to Alaska, where people attach wolves to a pole with an 8 foot chain and charge a few bucks so you can shoot them with a fucking BB gun. That’s the entire life the wolf knows. Living on a chain getting shot with BBs by hillbillies.

Life isn’t sunshine and rainbows. There’s a whole lotta shit in the world. But if you’re gonna sit there and tell me there’s only shit in the world I’m gonna tell you you’re a goddam ignorant fool.

You probably didn’t notice the Vietnamese rice farmer who gave up the chance to go on vacation with his friends so he could work the field with his dad so his dad wouldn’t blow out his back. Or the little African girl who spent the only money she had on a doll for her friend, literally just so she could see her friend smile. Or the Colombian girl in the salsa club who showed you what real passion was.

This isn’t the place to post about this. You wanna change something? Get the necessary degrees/work experience to make a difference. I have nothing to say to you other than change your fucking attitude. The world is what you make it quit being a negative little bitch
