If you are truly saved, then you will not want to live in sin. If you are living in sin, then perhaps you aren't truly saved? Ye shall know them by their fruits.

If you are saved, and are living in sin, you'll be miserable until you fix it.

This is a great question that Id be interested in hearing others insight into. Im not an expert, but in bible college they taught us to ALWAYS read the passage in context - never to take a verse by itself, but see what the surrounding ideas are, the context of the book as. a whole, and in the context of ALL of scripture

Thus I would start by expanding your question not just to why drunkards wont inherit the kingdom, but why for ALL the various behaviours Paul describes in that same list :

1 Corinthians 6:9-11 New International Version (NIV)

9 Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men[a] 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

I think v11 is what gives us a clue: NOONE will inherit the kingdom of god on our own - Drunkard, gay, greedy, gossipper. Doesnt matter - we are ALL sinners condemned without the blood and sanctification of Jesus Christ

Pauls point seems to be more talking about the fact that once we have received Christs forgiveness, one of the signs of salvation is no longer participating in our old worldly sins - We are dead to sin, alive in Christ. This should be a natural fruit of the spirit - someone still living in sin is in Pauls opinion likely not saved in the first place - therefore they wont inherit the kingdom of God

God decides who goes to heaven and who does not. I can't speak for God, but from an earthly POV the damage an alcoholic does to his family is significant. I'm not talking about someone who drinks from time to time, or when she's drunk she acts out, but more the classical addict kind of person. Anyone who is an addict is hard to be around in general, but is damaging to those close to them in significant ways. I see this around me, I used to be a porn addict myself, and it's not good for others.

Others are right to avoid addicts, and especially not to marry them. So when someone you're married to or a son of turns to drinking or whatever, it can get very confusing and emotionally turbulent.

Personally I feel a sense of relief knowing alcoholics and junkies and drug addicts and other such people won't be in heaven. I've seen the damage they do, and letting them in heaven (it doesn't matter what we've done, repentance is for all) without change is just unfair and unjust and not protective and not honoring those who did quit.

This is a tough field because I've been living in some sin for awhile, not rooting out lust. I don't want to condemn others, but this thinking forces me to get sober about what I'm doing and to really root out sin and take it seriously, because I want to be in heaven.

If one is led by the spirit of God, one of results of being led is self control. If one is being led by the flesh, the results of being led by the flesh is no self control. Because we are responsible for and have accountability for what we do in our flesh, we should not allow our flesh to run wild. Your inner man is new and you want to do God’s will. Your flesh is still wrought with carnal desires and wants to do its will, as it’s always done. You, the new man, wants to bring glory to God through your behavior and habits. The flesh, the old man, wants glory for itself, and wants worship. We worship our flesh by feeding it whatever it wants, filling its belly until it’s appeased. So, which master will we serve? The flesh or God? The next time you are drunk, and your flesh isn’t moving as fast as you are, and you have to intentionally move your hand to flush the toilette, notice the separation...the distinction between you and your flesh. You and your flesh become unsynchronized like a Japanese fight movie with English overdubs. Choosing God over the flesh can be exhausting at times, but it is worth it. Why will drunkards not inherit the kingdom of God? Because God is a jealous god, and does not share. A drunkard has chosen his belly as his god, and has therefore committed idolatry. It is as if your son got married to a whore. He cleans her up, gives her new clothes, jewels and gives her a place in the house. She promises that now she only has eyes for your son, but you see her sneak off and continues her old ways. You would not allow her back in the house.

I dunno! I got saved in part because a drunkard who also happened to be a believer told me he was praying for me.

He's been dead for a long time now. I hope he made it to the other side and Paul was wrong about that ...

Perhaps not just drunkards but anyone who chooses to become addicted to anything that is used as a coping mechanism for anything. Many drink to forget thier wounds, both physical and emotional for example. If Jesus desires you to go to him for healing and xyz gets in the way, then you are likely at risk of damnnation.

I suppose that inherit the kingdom of heaven could refer to manifesting God's kingdom in your life on this earth and does not refer to salvation.

My 2....

Given the Old Testament recommends using the tithe for a feast, including drinking a strong drink (Deuteronomy 14:26) & Jesus' first miracle, turning water into wine, IMO, it's not the moment you're more than tipsy that you are sinning. It's that you're more likely to commit a sin once you become drunk.

And in his infinite grace toward us, he then goes on to say - as has been posted here already -

People who continue in the practice of sin instead of the practice of holiness - note that I didn't say people who sin every day instead of being perfect every day - never experienced the washing, the sanctification, the justification in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

And without that, you will not inherit the kingdom of heaven.

But with it, you will not want to practice sin anymore because you'll want to please your Father and King.
