So... I'm not too sure exactly what I'm asking but here goes.

I get routinely "stepped on" and manipulated by Doctors, Nurses and receptionists. I have specific objectives when going to an appointment and it gets derailed by their agenda. They have a finite about of time to deal with me and 90% of it is spent selling me on their ideas that are already set in stone. They have absolutely no interest in going deeper than the surface and promoting whatever standard treatment they've decide on.

The relationship is not one where I am customer requesting the help of a consultant, it's one of finding the right box to put me in and sending me on my way. There's a power imbalance there they are the gatekeepers to treatment and also have the ability to waste months of my time with treatments that don't work or delayed appointments.

The problem is one of the short appointment times, the disinterest in experimental procedures, etc, and the length of time required to get an appointment. Here's the typical runaround:

  1. Appointment is Made: Wait time: 3 months
  2. Consultation Occurs: 5 minutes. Alternative ideas shut down
  3. Follow up appointment: 3 Months. "We have to wait to see if the treatment will work"
  4. 1 year passes. Symptoms change or go away on their own, or get worse. Previous consultations irrelevant.
  5. 5 years pass. Previously benign symptoms have evolved into something nearly impossible to treat. Try new doctor. Go back to setup 1 and repeat again.

This is basically the story of my life when it comes to healthcare.

This is a social / interpersonal problem I'm having. I'm not the type of person who gets pushed around easily but I'm also not the assertive borderline "Karen" / Sociopath attitude that sometimes required to get what I need. The sad fact is, if I'm pursuing a test or a drug that has a 10% chance of improving my condition, if I'm constantly being discouraged and/or delayed in the system, I lose motivation and begin to question my own sanity , leading to nothing good for anyone. The moment they say a "crack" in story , they are ready to put you in the "antidepressant" box.

It's almost as if every doctor's appointment is also secretly a psychological cross-examination to see if there's a high probability that anxiety is causing half your symptoms. Yeah. Maybe. Except that I'm here for the other half. Is it too hard to ask for you to be thorough? Or maybe it's that I'm become irate because you've only alloted 3 minutes discuss how the next 6 months of my life with to down.
