How to dodge the question about salary during a video interview? I generally try to get 2/3 offers from companies and make them compete to get the maximum salary, but I want to look good and seem like I care more about morals/technology than money.

To me, them pressing for a number before they've confirmed that they want you is a red flag.

They're not looking for the best that they can get, they're looking for the cheapest that they can get. Why work for bottom feeders?

I run the interview panel for candidates as part of my responsibilities, so I interview something like 3-5 a week. I will tell you up front that there aren't any good ways to come off the way you want to by bringing up salary prior to either:

A)them asking you if you have any questions about the opportunity, or

B)them conducting the interview.

I've seen it happen even among qualified candidates and it just doesn't work.

That being said, you in turn should dodge that question prior to those things too should they bring it up. If they press for a number prior to interview commencement, "If this is a good fit I'm interested in a competitive salary."

If they press further to back you against the wall, I would take the range of salaries for the position you find on places like glassdoor (there are exceptions w/ the data there though), and give them a range, not a number. Make this range be the 75th percentile to 100th percentile of those you saw (again, this is not a science, some ranges are very very off, be careful here).

Another question you can ask is, "what is the salary range you have allocated to this kind of work". It opens the door a bit for them to give you some insight without being held to a specific number that they might offer you.
