I have a labour job assembling customer orders in a warehouse and I work with a split group of people. Men and Women share an array of different jobs all requiring a different skill set and activity.

It's not gruelling work, I've had harder I've had easier. Lots of walking and moderate lifting. Mostly easy shit.

Every week me and another Woman work together to complete 30+ orders for our company's biggest customer. They have many stores and every week they expect their shit to be picked before the week is up. And in my co workers defence she is easily one of the hardest working and most diligent people at my company, hence her responsibility in this area.

Today I decided to dig a little deeper and examine the work load that we split and came to a few 'unstartling' conclusions.

  • Even though I already knew I picked more orders in general, this week for example I assembled 14 and she did 12. (Other employees pick up the slack for the other 6+)

  • I abuse my break times and go over. What this means is that she arguably spends more time on the floor than me.

  • She also had 2 hours of overtime. I had none.

So what does this all mean?

I was able to do more work, in less time and got paid LESS to do it.

See, the wage gap exists. I get paid less to do more work than her.

What a world.
