Yes, in two separate cities. I attended a set of meetups for practicing French and it was alot of fun. I did make friends and was even invited to parties in their homes. I moved from that city though. I also attended technology and marketing related meetups in both cities. I got to know different people, created friendships, and continue communications with them online and in future meetings. I just went to on event related to blockchain and met some crypto currency traders. Fascinating people.

I go to a board game meetup regularly and made friends and we meet seperately outside the meet up too. One of the guys there got me into riding bikes with him and is teaching me mountain biking. It's useful if you want to find people who like the things you like. I would avoid the ones that are unfocused like social meetups because they tend to be boring or women dominated.

Used it fair bit for hiking and swimming. Good for building connections or meeting new people.

I have. It's worked out well. You find/identify groups to attend based on your interests and what you're currently looking to get out of life. Mostly acquaintances and a deeper friendship or two. Whether you get mostly acquaintances or deeper friendships really just depends on circumstances.
