well if he is already going to college, and his situation is that bad, then he should consider just going full-time so that he can get enough money in loans so that he can move out. if he is already full-time than he can probably just get more loan money. if he doesn't want the debt, well, then he's made a cost benefit analysis and has decided that getting beat by his parents isn't as bad as having to pay back borrowed money. as much as debt sucks, if you study something useful (i.e. an engineering or mathematical discipline) and learn how to be fiscally responsible, you can pay back the student loans in a few years, several if you want to splurge. Furthermore, you may not realize this because you guys are young, but moving in with a friend changes things...for better or for worse. Also, depending on the laws of your state, you may end up in dire straits should you find yourself in a situation in which you want him out. Where I live, if someone lives in a house for two weeks, they are legally a resident, and getting them removed requires an eviction; which is an extremely time consuming and tedious process.
