Tell her the script was written without specifying the sex of any characters to make casting easier. So it's just a coincidence that Ripley is a woman.

[–]username2136[S] 53 points54 points  (0 children) | Copy

That’s right I completely forgot about that.

Yeah, I read that somewhere lol.

Which makes it a kind of sexism or female chauvinism. If Ripley had been played by Tom Skeritt the same wife would not have said "Alien is a movie where nobody listens to the smart man..."

Tbh it’s pretty accurate. Although there’s something to be said about the undertone behind the review.

This sounds like the origins of the Cat lady.

The vast majority of horror movies have this trope:'if they just listened to X, this wouldn't have happened'.
The Alien franchise survives on people not following protocol, i.e. breathing alien air without testing it, and taking a 'petting zoo' approach to xenomorphs they encounter.

You could argue it the other way, that she was an inhuman bitch that was going to let a crewmember die in quarantine. As unstoppable as the alien was in this movie, it wouldn't have changed the outcome one bit.

In the first two and Prometheus at least, they were being intentionally exposed to the alien biology.

[–]apeironman1 point2 points  (2 children) | Copy

Certainly in Alien the fix was in, with Ash being the corporate quisling who overrode Ripley sticking to the quarantine reg's.

But in Prometheus, you had one scientist open his helmet in an alien environment, and another scientist who was a zoologist I think, just reach out his hand to the first alien, with no thought as to whether it might be aggressive or venomous or carrying space rabies. Sheer stupidity.

Covenant, same thing: "we tested the air from space and it's totally safe. No alien-engineered bioweapons lose down there." loose

I haven't seen Covenant yet, and while certainly there is a large amount of inexplicable stupidity in Prometheus, David intentionally infects Holloway, who, IIRC, passes it to Shaw.

That's right! I forget the exact timing, but I think it turned out David didn't need to, ultimately. May have to watch again.

The keyword here is smart, not woman.

[–]fuckyouredditx27 points8 points  (1 child) | Copy

sigh .... man or woman, nobody EVER listens to the smart person in movies until it's too late.

[–]username2136[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children) | Copy

Ikr Ripley was written to be a man in the first draft of the script anyway so it would have worked the same way if she were a man.

It's a light hearted joke, lighten up

[–]Philletto4 points5 points  (1 child) | Copy

All the light hearted jokes where men are stupid amount to a very strong message that ALL MEN ARE STUPID.

It is deliberate.

[–]Joemac_-1 points0 points  (0 children) | Copy

there is nothing here saying that the people who werent listening were only men. There is no implication that she is smart for being a woman either.

Sounds like Aliens the 2nd movie. The 1st one nobody really knew what was going on. The 2nd one Sigourney Weaver was hired as a consultant.

[–]username2136[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children) | Copy

Yeah, I guess the reason why the marines didn’t listen to her is because they might rather listen to experience than reason? Idk I haven’t seen the movie yet. I have seen a very cursory review of it.

[–]MegaMindxXx-1 points0 points  (1 child) | Copy

I like the 2nd one the best. It has some male heroes as well. Bill Paxton is great. I can see how somebody can see it as a feminist hero type movie. But I don't think it was intentional. It was directed by cuck James Cameron so it's possible.

[–]username2136[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

Huh I was not expecting to hear that Cameron directed it.

That's pretty on point. Most horror movies everyone seems to be fairly unthinking to be honest. the slightly lazy writers repeat the same things (let's split up, let's not turn on the light switch, let's fall over every 10 steps when running, let's not finish off the killer, instead let's turn our back to them) over and over. Cabin in the woods being a notable exception.

[–]Mister_Bossmen1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy

Cabin in the Woods has the spin where there is an actual third party influencing them into falling for these "cliches" and making dumb decisions.

That movie is amazing. And the wide shot where the task force is getting ripped to shreds is great. I especially love the guy whose literal soul gets abducted

Jurassic World is a movie where no one listens to the smart AND HOT man, and everyone but him and the evil female who only cared about herself making as much money as possible survive, and she still winds up in a romantic relationship with the smart AND HOT man who told her that she was going to get everyone killed.

[–]BornaBes000 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

Acctualy not really cuz there is an android there whose mision is to bring that alien to his creators so he messes up the crews plans and he is the reason everything happened and he wouldnt listen to anyone except his creators

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
