This is an interesting question. But the answer is complicated. I realized this after watching the movie Inferno

SPOILERS AHEAD I read the book before the movie came out and the finale blew my mind. They get where the virus is only to find out that its container is already open. And then revelation: the virus was not a bioweapon. Not an apocalyptic one. It made sterile everyone with certain conditions (health issues mostly) so the world population will decrease and after some generations, it will naturally disappear.

And then the movie came out. Not revelation. The mortal virus was a mortal virus. Tom Hanks stopped the apocalypse and saved us all. And the is when it hit me. Capitalism needs overpopulation. Samsung and Apple will very much rather sell 1B cellphones than 100M. Also, many systems depend on overpopulation. So the fact that many people are choosing to not have children is alarming... for people like Bezzos. How are they suppose to stay billionaires if few people are buying? And this is not the first time I said this and for some reason, I don’t find my comments about it

Constantly making more people is just not a sustainable economic plan. Automatization and globalisation are more relevant than just reproducing

With better medicine and the fact that childfree are usually among the educated westerners, I am sure they'll stay engaged in the world and life for a long time- it's not like today old people just crawl away and die, look at the politicians average age. It's not like many children actively care for their parents or that all parents even want that. Childfree people will also to an extent have a financial edge to afford added personal care

I think people like to spend time around their own age groups so they'll have a bigger group of similar people to socialize with and keep on living their lives. I dont think even most parents dream or look forward to the idea of being half vegetable and having their kids change their diapers, or just being stuck at home with grandkids all day

Less kids being born, less paternity fraud. Men should be happy. Less pregnancy scares. Maybe only wanted children will be born. Wanted children are loved and well taken care of. Happier adults. People opting out of parenting might be doing everyone a favor.

Age gaps beyond 5+ years will be considered a criminal offense

Dating a woman will require a chaperone, having sex without committing to a relationship would be a crime, and having a relationship without a commitment to marriage will also be a crime.

Women will demand to be supported by guys they simply book up with and the govt will make it happen.

A stiffer tax burden on non-married men to incentivize commitment.

You're observing urbanization, just one level up. It used to be rural people moving to cities, and the cities having sub-replacement fertility all the time (more people dead than born). This has been the case for thousands of years for a all cities sufficiently large.

Now you see "rural" immigrants moving to the "city" of the west - or rather - anywhere affluent (singapore is great example specific to asia).

From this I'd infer that fertility is inherently linked to poverty and lack of options, where children are means to an end to improve ones own status, as opposed to expensive luxury.

Don't be so eager to pin everything on evil modern whamen. The environmental influences on demographics run far deeper than one may think at first glance.

From one hand, lower birth rates are good, because resources aren't endless and environment can't keep on with our rates of production and consumption. There is harm that can't be undone and we urgently need to change our production and recycling systems.

From the other hand, we aren't ready for lower birth rates economically. But I guess we'll never be and it just has to happen sooner or later. It seems that even immigration won't help much as it's a universal trend. We'll have to change our economy and budgeting, there also will be the problem of the ratio between elder and working people. Automation probably will help with the lack of people who can work and take care of others, but it also will mean that a whole industries will have massive layoffs and some fields/jobs won't require as much workers as they do now.

Socially I hope that there won't be more pressure on people to get married and pop out more children. Anyway, societies most likely will become really child-friendly. Free kindergartens, good schools, all kinds of benefits for children and their parents.

With declining birth rates marriage rates will continue to drop. Less people will be interested in marriage and I do think that it's okay. If there is a zero pressure or expectation for one to get married eventually, there will be less hasty miserable marriages. People will get married when they really want it. Casual sex, FWB will become more popular as well as open relationships, polygamy, polyamory etc. That's okay too, people will have more options to choose from, maybe it will make them more contented. Maybe the attitude towards casual sex will change with all these studies about the harm it causes, but I doubt it.

All in all I hope that things will be better. Although there are high chances that I hope in vain.

You’ll see even more immigration. I think you’ll also see increased bitterness between the sexes. Each blaming the other for the shortages. I think inevitably property prices will fall, part of the reason now they’re so high is artificial through mass immigration anyway. But I heard by 2050 the global population is expected to start to decrease. Antidepressants and drug and alcohol use will skyrocket. I think lifespans will shorten even if only by a little. Travel, cars, luxury items will all do pretty well since what else are people gonna spend their money on? Anyway, those are my predictions off the top of my head.

I have some major questions about how that number was determined. If you look at Figure 4 of the IFS study (linked below), they’re trying to use results from a survey to suggest that the trend line will skyrocket (note that the red line is completely projected and is not consistent with the historical fluctuations in the survey answer).

The most inmediate efect?

Shortage in welfare state. This is, by now, quite obvious. All first world countries have a masive public debt that is getting worst with the pandemic.

Men are not producing enough, and there aren't enough men to produce neither. Also, becouse women now work and earn money they are consuming more products, but this doesn't translate into the production levels becouse women don't participate in the heavy industries, they work for services and the State.

The result of this is that the demand surpass the offer by a lot, and prices start to skyrocket. This happened in lots of countries already, only the US could afford such high consumerism and standard of living, becouse US had China as it's slave work hand... This of course had an impact on the US work market of course, but unnemployment rates weren't that high to put a strain on US economy. Well, time is over, and China has taken the lead now in the world trade market and you see US starting to need heavy industry...

You get the picture.

We are aproaching an era where resources won't be enough for everybody. This is the era of the economic warfare. Old systems of regional production will be the path to economic growth, old consumist, finance, service based burocratic economies with big welfare states will die.

Manual labor, against the expected, will prevail. Office jobs will suffer.

From personal experience, "childless" brother, uncles and friends, men don't really care about having children - I didn't, it was organic.

None of the "childless" men I know give a damn, ALL of the childless women I know do care and usually over-compensate.

I believe that fertile women will be in higher demand and hypergamous behaviour is going to increase dramatically for women in their 20s. This will also cause a drop in demand for women in their mid 30s and older. We're already witnessing this to a small degree...

Declining birthrates will require more immigration. Western welfare states tend to increasingly produce women who pursue career over family. Welfare states also require a growing population and economy to tax in order to fund the welfare. It's a catch-22 of sorts. We will need immigrants.

I'm in the US so one thing that will probably happen here is that we'll allow more immigration. So society, from a population standpoint, won't change much. Countries like Japan, though, will have to make massive cultural changes just for the survival of the country.

As to the individuals that will never marry or be part of a family or reproduce, it's their choice. It's better that people who don't want to be married or parents don't make that choice. If they're not in for the long haul then they'll do more damage to their spouse and kids. They're better off alone and society is better off for that decision as well.

=.= you need to understand government and social pressures/population pressures.

60 years ago give or take a decade... 1 man working 30 ish hours a week would net the equivalent of $110,000 modern yearly income.

A wife would chill at home, clean house a little, cook a bit, do what ever she wanted the rest of the time.

They would have 5 to 9 kids... imagine the population not doubling but increasing by a factor of 5 to 9 people every....30 years....

So they made the fed, started slow hyper inflation, and now it takes 2 people working none stop to BEARLY get by. Thus people started having fewer children. But the population is still going up.

So now they are pushing trans/gay life styles to further bring down the population as people are too stupid to actually manage their breeding habbits, and the gov is too stupid to tell people whats up.

So the main issue is the money, but the cause of the main issue is population pressure.

This new generation of girls is used to having so much attention from being thots online. As they get phased into their 30-40s they're gonna have a hard time dealing with the sharp decline of male attention. They will start to notice no one cares about their problems anymore. Less people will be willing to deal with their shit. Less help will be available to them.

If they haven't started prepping for life after their youth while in their 20s, it's gonna be a rough adjustment.
