The number one bestest thing you can do is model a good relationship, particularly if her mom cycles through bad ones.

Give her plenty of age appropriate chores and responsibilities that grow as she does along with consequences for her actions.

I strongly believe in requiring that children participate in a sport or some sort of physical activity (preferably group), but not everyone feels this way. The benefits of earned instead of artificially inflated self esteem, teamwork, sacrifice and planning, and generally keeping them out of the bad crowd at school make it worth it to me. Plus it sets them up for a lifetime of health and fitness.

I also think having them earn their own money instead of getting allowances as soon as possible is a good idea.

Basically remember at all times that you are raising them to be ADULTS and preferably happy, productive ones. Think about the type of grown up person you want her to be, and then lead her into that role. For example if you want her to handle conflicts maturely and without manipulation, don't let her cry her way out of them while young.

Most of us grow up trying to be good human beings, and there's nothing wrong with that idea.

What gets left out is the ability to withstand evil. We don't teach our children how to take a blow and how to retaliate; how to argue effectively; how to be assertive without being overbearing.

There's a book called "People Of The Lie" by M. Scott Peck. To paraphrase one of his concepts, most of us trying to be good end up with no idea what to do when confronted with evil intent. That's why evil is often successful.
